VG247 held an interview with some of the higher-ups of HAL Laboratory, and in one of the questions, they had very interesting responses to whether they would be interested in making a 3D Kirby like Super Mario Galaxy.
Kumazaki: “We’re really interested in making a fully 3D Kirby game! I suspect there are also more than a few users who’d appreciate being able to freely run around a sprawling map, fighting with copy abilities.
“In one of our previous titles, Kirby Air Ride (seen below), there was a mode called City Trial which saw players racing around a large 3D city area on Air Ride Machines. It definitely showed off how well the combination of the Kirby style action and 3D environment works, so I think it’s certainly a possibility given how much Kirby is capable of!
“The amazing 3D effect of the Nintendo 3DS goes really well with 3D action games, as proven with Super Mario 3D Land. We thought this would also work well in a side scrolling action game too, and that we could use this to develop a new play style that made use of 3D effects with a real sense of depth. It was this that led us to create Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
“In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, most of the stages go back into the screen, and so what we’ve created is a new side scrolling action game where enemies come at you not just from back within the screen but also from at the front of it too! We think this area has a lot of potential for expanding on in the future.
“Of course, we’re also continuing to evolve the Kirby series as a whole, and I hope that one of our next challenges will be to produce a Kirby game in full 3D that still maintains the same depth of play our fans have come to expect.”
Hattori: “Kirby as a character has such a huge variety of transformations and appearance that of course if there is enough desire from our users, it’s possible he might one day explore a 3D world.”
I just saw this. HYPE. I love Kirby, it's Nintendo's one 2D platformer series that isn't afraid to buck tradition and go full experimental. Transferring some of the franchise's formula to 3D seems amazing. I would buy that game in a heartbeat
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F
Remember this? One of the many early beta projects that eventually led to Kirby's Return to Dreamland/Kirby's Adventure Wii. I'd love a game like this.. Now, my Wii U still doesn't have a Kirby game, so.. Kirby 3D for Wii U?

I saw this pic sometime after 3D Land's unveiling and I must say that some of the ideas must have overlapped. A 3D Kirby set in an interconnected world similar to the Amazing Mirror (GBA) would be perfect. Metroid Prime's 3D map on the gamepad would help anyone how to NOT get lost in it. Add a City Trial-esque world where you have a randomly created level in which you collect powerups for challenges and we have a winner
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

They have experimented with 3D before, and now they outright stated that they are looking into it. I'm looking forward to more news on this potential game.
While a 3D platformer might not work too well though i wouldn't mind being proven wrong here i can clearly see a RPG with 3D environments as something totally epic.
The Kirby series has all the beautiful landscapes, the character designs, the potential of an awesome unique battle mechanic and even the backstory to make this one of the very best games ever released on a Ninty platform. If all went well it wouldn't fare any worse than the superb Super Mario Galaxy.
