The only truly reliable method I've found is using an externally-powered WD Book, as pictured above. In my experience, anything not externally powered is liable to painful experiences of corrupt data.
This is exactly why I went with a hard drive that used external power adapter. When researching, I kept reading about corrupt data and didn't want to risk losing anything.
I do use a USB thumb drive for backup, but it's never plugged into my Wii U 24/7. Only used to backup saves and downloads to copy back later on, it sits in a safe spot. My hard drive is always used when playing games.
