The reason why I believe Splatoon is the best Wii U game is because it is a truly new game. It's not a sequel, i.e. Smash 4, Pikmin 3, Xenoblane Chronicles X, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, etc.
For me Mario Maker is a razor-close runner-up to the best Wii U game.
Thoughts?
For me, Super Mario Maker is new but it's based off old games. That doesn't mean it's bad. It is it's own game but it's not creative and new like Splatoon IMO.
Splatoon reminds me of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The art style and controls are really well done.
Does anyone else agree with my Yoshi's Island-Splatoon comparison?
Now the Wii U is not perfect. Some games are sub par in my view.
Double Dash > Mario Kart 8.
For me, Mario Kart 8 is more about graphics, less about gameplay. It doesn't eclipse the gameplay of Double Dash IMO. Even the Wii Mario Kart is better. 200 cc is a redeeming quality, however.
Super Mario Sunshine > Super Mario 3D World
When I first played Sunshine I was hooked. I played it and played it and played it. It is an amazing game. Still is. Sadly, 3D World did not impress me. It felt very soulless and insincere. I did not complete it. It's in my backlog. I'm thinking about giving it another chance but it will never be as good as Sunshine.
Also Mario Party 10 is utterly disappointing. They really should put a classic Mario Party mode. Thankfully I have my N64 and Gamecube Mario Party's.
Lots of great game on Wii U but for me it's Bayonetta 2 followed by Xenoblade Chronicles X and among others games that I rate highly are Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong TF, Mario 3D World,Windwaker HD, Mario Kart 8 , Smash Bros
I am sorry but you are all wrong. Currently the best game out on Wii U is Captain toad Treasure Tracker, until Star Fox Zero is released. Then Star Fox Zero will be the best game of all time, and also best game on Wii U.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
I have too many favorites. The only ones I play now, are the games with replay value, otherwise I already the story mode, except W101, Donkey Kong, and Darksiders 2. I'm already wiped out on video games. I might as well hoot up Art Academy. That's why I'm on the internet, right now.
Man, that's tough, but I was actually thinking about this yesterday (when IGN did their updated "Top 25 Wii U Games"), and I keep coming back to Splatoon. And this is coming from someone who has enjoyed the Wii U's library immensely.
I think what draws me to Splatoon is its purity, from a gameplay standpoint — it's just so strongly designed that it manages to be the game I come back to just to play it rather than to open up more content, or check boxes, or pursue some other kind of digital MacGuffin. There are very few complaints I can levy at the game; it feels extremely fresh, and its audio-visual aesthetics are just completely stellar. And to get a little weirdly meta, it feels like the most "Wii U" game out there — from its reliance on the GamePad to its strange, colorful nature, and the fact that while it doesn't have some features that other contemporary shooters have, it outdoes them in terms of fun.
Smash Bros. for Wii U is a real monument, and so is Xenoblade Chronicles X. For me, the latter is the only other serious contender for the top spot (though at 133 hours in, I'm still not finished). But as much as Xenoblade appeals to me, it's a flawed monument in contrast to Splatoon's nearly perfect simplicity.
Splatoon for me. It's new, colorful, and most importantly it's fresh. Second place goes to the Wonderful 101 for also being fresh and new! Third place I would say is Mario Kart 8, just because the DLC, graphics, and online play for that game are superb!
I was honestly kind of disappointed with Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Mario Maker. I felt that both never really reached their full potential. Smash felt extremely lacking in the singleplayer side, and I felt that Mario Maker was lacking in the amount of things you could use for levels. Both games however, are definitely worth purchasing.
Now the only games left for the Wii U that I am interested in are Pokken Tournament and Genei Ibun Roku japan emblem singing time. Star Fox doesn't interest me in the slightest, especially with all the talk about it's control scheme.
Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

This. While I love many of the Wii U games, Splatoon has become one of my favorites just because of the pure FUN. This is what games are supposed to be, and this game is extremely good at it.
I don't know if Splatoon's my favorite Wii U game though, that'd probably be a tie between Smash, MK 8 and, well, Splatoon.
Honorable mentions: Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Maker.
I used to think Mario Kart 8 but the nonexistence of DLC after April 2015 has meant Hyrule Warriors has taken its place recently. Still got parts of the Twilight and Termina maps left in addition to Ganon's Fury and Cucco's Fury (that's not even counting the extras provided by the 3DS port existing). To me MK8 would've had its best potential if there were 2 more DLC packs at least (timing of November 2015 and April 2016 would've been fine given the poor holiday lineup for Wii U).
Right now MK8 is at around 866 hours but only 24 of that has been since August 1st 2015 (78 since June 1st 2015) so you can see what effect no DLC announcements has done to my usage of it. In contrast, I have around 450 hours of Hyrule Warriors usage with 192 of that being since August 1st 2015 (225 since June 1st 2015, the month that Legends was announced).
Every must-have Wii U game is... well, the best Wii U game.
MK8, Splatoon, Smash Bros, 3D World, Bayonetta, Pikmin 3, W101, Mario Maker, XCX... the list goes on and on. Not to mention potential gems like Zelda U and SFZ.
But I'd say Splatoon is the best game on the Wii U. Because it's just so fun and amazing.
Good Lord, I love the Wii U.
