@Darknyht - You're absolutely right, and I couldn't agree with you more!! πŸ‘

There were a load of truly cr-p games released for both the SNES and, judging by the reviews at the time, for the Mega Drive!
I don't remember many of the "well known" JRPGs being described so harshly though β€” but then, who's memory is really that good? 😊

I confess, without any embarrassment, that I've been a Nintendo "fanboy" (😊) since the days of the NES, but it's the specific era of SNES JRPGs that I remember most.

There's no doubt, as you rightly say, that Breath of Fire came in for a heck of a lot of criticism back then for the ridiculous frequency of random battles, but, strangely, it still figures highly in any "Best rpg" lists!

Maybe "nostalgia goggles" don't ALWAYS give us a totally accurate perspective πŸ˜‚

@songwriter24 Whoa there cowboy, calm down! There is no reason to get so defensive and angry. I honestly have no idea what your beef is. I would totally agree I'd love to see those games on the Switch. But my point was, and my point is accurate, that that golden age you refer to, wasn't so perfect. Those games did face criticism and there were people who didn't like them. And not just among "JRPG haters". Different people have different tastes. There were people who liked Chrono Trigger but hated FF6 and vice versa, just as an example. My comments about there internet were meant to contrast then and now. Nowadays when there is something bad in a game, everyone hears it hours after launch, if not sooner. But back then we only heard from our own groups of friends, our own little bubbles and maybe some magazine reviews. There wasn't the sort of mass communication there is now. And sadly the nature of modern mass communication is that people gravitate to disagreeing. Most people who agree just "like" a comment and move on.

I hope you open your mind a little and learn people can disagree and share their thoughts on things that differ from yours, without it being a personal attack.

And further, about your comment about 15 year old gamers, My students are 15 years old. I've been playing games since the mid 90s and because of older family members am familiar with a lot of games older than that. I own every Nintendo console from NES to Switch and have owned every Playstation at one time. So stow your comments in that regard.

@PolarExperience - Sorry buddy I should have replied to you earlier! My bad! 😊

Firstly, thanks for your opening sentence! Very reassuring 😊

Second - Well I truly didn't know that Nintendo hadn't the rights to publish those classics! Really sad!

Never mind, the recent announcements re the planned FF releases just might be an indication of things to come β€” but after reading your info on the subject of those "rights", I don't think I'll be holding my breath for too much more on the JRPG front!

Take it easy buddy

@Heavyarms55 - RIGHT!! 🀣 This is a perfect case of how the written word i.e. Forums, texts, Whatsapp, whatever can give someone a totally wrong idea as to what the other is saying!

Firstly, I put a "jolly" emoji ( apologies but I simply don't know the names of all these things - I'm old, after all! 😊 ) after my opening sentence, precisely to AVOID your thinking my first sentence was aggressive!
It was MEANT to be precisely the opposite!

Second - I put a "smiley" at the end, for the same reason! So that you WOULDN'T mistakenly think that the "15" comment was aimed at you - which, as we know, you did!

The point I was trying to make - pretty clumsily as it's turned out - was that this is, quite rightly, the era of TODAY'S Generation, which is just as it should be!!
My generation had IT'S time 20+ years ago, so of course most young gamers won't have a clue what someone like me is talking about when I waffle on about how good Terranigma was, for example.

THIS generation wants to play and discuss their own games, not the fading memories of someone who was their age in 1993 - ish 🀣

So my basic point was, although I love ( and, in many cases, OWN! ) countless games from the past 7 or 8 years, I would still be absolutely "over the moon" if Nintendo were to release some of those great JRPGs from the '90's on the Switch!
And that there's nothing much wrong with people such as myself wanting to see them "remembered"?

Yes, I admit, I got a little bit "antsy" about a couple of things you said β€” which seemed to infer that I didn't know sh-t!! πŸ˜‚ I soon got over it though, it's not a big enough deal, by a long way, to bear any sort of "grudge" about!
Dear god, at the end of the day, it's only a discussion about gaming!! 😊

So you see, nothing was aimed at you - in fact, quite the opposite!

But like I said, that's the minefield of making ANY comment via text β€” someone, somewhere will misunderstand it! 🀣

Unless you just say "that's good" or "that's crap", THEN I think you're pretty safe!! 😊

The only Chrono Trigger hating I recall was early Internet nerd wars going on between FF6 and CT, who felt only one of those games can be good and the other must be awful.

I do remember the "Sega does what Nintendon't" war stretched to Game Boy vs. Game Gear as well. (not sure how many people owned a Lynx or TurboExpress as I don't know if I saw a Lynx ever and I probably only saw a TE in a toy store advertisement and was shocked at the price. Surely they were two or maybe even three hundred dollars?).

@KingMike - Hi "Mike" (?) I had to reply because I thought I was the only one who'd had this fantasy of a portable "killer" console that had specs ( supposedly?? ) to die for β€” and a price to match a decent Fender guitar! β€” But never seemed to actually be on sale anywhere?!?

Like you, buddy, I never once saw one in any store that I visited!

A VERY weird era for Atari with both the Lynx and the Jaguar!
Nice planning but, in the end, lousy execution, I think?

You're supposed to tell him what you want, what you really, really want.

The Wii U is still the world's best console. Buy one today!

Surely THEY were around for a short enough time that humanity has been able to forget their existence, yes?
