It's unique and fun for awhile, but the new wore off quickly for me and it was tough on my eyes. But as I told Damo, if you want to have some fun, put on the Virtual Boy and sit in a chair and spin around about 20 times and then stand up and try to play the game. Of course move out of the way of furniture first.
My Virtual Boy arrived last week and I've been loving it so far, as you can see:
Seriously though, this is a rather underrated machine. Some of the games - like Hudson's Star Soldier-esque Vertical Force are fantastic. Like Ant says, expect some reviews in the retro section soon!

I had one for a while too, but it broke sadly and the cheap stand also broke so it was hard to play. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it ever even had any official way that you could strap it to your head, it was just meant to be played on that stand thing. That kinda baffled me since it kills the whole mystique that you might be able to 'wear' it and somehow it'll be like your immersed in it, and it made it hard to keep your eyes up to it. I think it was cheaply produced hardware put out at a weird time with poor advertising. Design gripes aside, the games were actually quite good the little that I played. There was some kind of 3-D spaceship thing that was really cool, tennis, and wario was good too. Kinda wish I still had it but someone left a game in it and the pins got all loose. Also it did hurt your eyes and brain after 10 minutes or so, but then so do hard drugs and those are quick fun too, right?

I'm sooooo envious, I only got to play Mario Tennis once, I loved the thing, besides I'm a collector too so I'll get one someday I swear. And I'm eagerly awaiting for those reviews.

Dudes Teleroboxer, Red Alarm and Wario FTW! Especially Red Alarm, played that so much.
I thought the VB ROCKED! It was gameboy on steroids. It was definitely not destined to greatness, considering the set-up. But stil, had some good times with it.
@Ren: The spaceship game you're talking about is probably Red Alarm.
A friend of mine had one when I was little. The graphics gave me a headache, and then having to hunch over to play it hurt my neck/shoulders. The collectors can have them. :3

As a system, it sucked. It sucked in every capacity. Battery life wasn't good. It was hardly "portable" anyway. It looks horrid (both the graphics and the system). It's uncomfortable. You look like an idiot when playing it (not to mention being completely unaware of your surroundings. It kills your eyes. And it wasn't "virtual reality" as advertised.
But a lot of the software rocked! Wario Land for VB was my favorite of all the Wario Land games. Mario Clash was addictive. Same goes for 3D Tetris. Mario Tennis was a bit simple and tame compared to later titles to bear the same name, but it was still fun in its own right. Jack Bros. was tough but fun and very charming. Galactic Pinball was my favorite video game rendition of pinball. And I can't remember if I had Red Alarm or Vertical Force, but I had one of them and it was at least decent, though definitely my least favorite of my considerable collection (well, considerable considering the extent of the VB library, haha).
The Virtual Boy is a bizarre system. It by all means should have been awful, and in general it was, but out of its entire library (about 15 games), almost everything released for it was pretty darn good. And I only parted with mine about 5 years ago when I needed to pay for a repair to my Gamecube, so it's not nostalgia talking.
I don't regret trading it in though because the inconvenience and discomfort of playing it outweighed how good the games were most of the time, sadly.
I like how it's different to other systems and it's not just that it's different, there are some fun games for it too. The 3D effect was often underused though which is a shame. Deciding to power it using batteries was, I think, a big mistake. I made sure to get a mains adapter asap.
Never played one. I was born 1 year after it came out. Never heard of it until I became a nintendo fan. I would probaly buy just to play The 2 mario games and the wario game. If only it didnt cause headaches.
