I didn't enjoy sonic enough to consider it a system seller and mario was in the same boat (although I played a lot of super mario world) until mario 64 came out. I am not really sure why that is, as I had both of my eyes during the early part of my owning both systems (although the snes got very little play time at first as I didn't like LttP ---oh the irony) and I prefer most 3d platforms now due to my vision (camera angles and shadows make it easier for me to judge distance and movement and not make stupid mistakes or missteps). Although I think I was in my impatient kid gamer phase right before my amputation so that may have something to do with it.

@Horsemeat I didn't own a Mega Drive/Genesis back in the day - so to be honest, aside from the obvious, I'm not sure what all of the real big hitters were for that console (I'm just glad I have so much Sonic in my life!) ..I would say, however, that the SNES Classic has a better curated selection by the looks of things - there's a lot of 'filler' on the Mega Drive-thingy I've got - but, it does take cartridges, so if anything major is missing, there's a solution at least!
I believe this is the full list:

..like I say, a lot of filler! - but some real gems in there too, especially for the uninitiated like myself!
You got one of those AtGames machines or something? (maybe like the Wii knockoff one I have sitting around) If you didn't know, only about half that list (up to Virtua Fighter 2) are Genesis games, everything after is probably modern budget game junk.
I passed up an actual copy of Arrow Flash regularly at a vintage store before learning it's actually a slightly pricey game for a real copy. Streets of Rage 3 is one of the priciest (though I thought 2 was generally considered the best of the trilogy?) and Golden Axe 3 was only physically released in Japan.
That's one of the downsides of these Genesis machines. While Sega's porting division (M2?) is pretty amazing when they work on stuff, Sega is known to let some rather subpar outside developers work with their IP. AtGames' devices have been criticized particularly for poor sound quality and supposedly lack of save functionality. (though the latter has only been a concern for people who... mod... their devices as I think the devices have shipped with games that didn't use saving. And I think the sorts of games which used saving (like RPGs) were smaller in number on the Gen/MD library. Sonic 3, the Shining Forces and the Phantasy Stars were probably the most famous.)
@KingMike Yeah I'm told that my ATGames machine is an updated model - and this one does include save states, thankfully! (..for the RPG's I've played at least, can't remember if it's for all games off the top of my head) ..and the collection feels more like 40 games rather than the claimed 80 to be honest - a lot of the games towards the back end of the list basically look and play like knock-offs of old Atari games (eg. I'm pretty sure that there's a Frogger-clone amongst them) ..but those games are pretty much buried at the back end of the menu, so you can easily ignore them! (..plus, even if we call it 40 games, it still worked out at something like £1.20 per game - not bad at all!)
The emulation is a bit basic, but it's perfectly playable - especially now that I've picked up a pair of official wired controllers for it (the included wireless infrared controllers are horrible!) ..the SNES Classic, by comparison, does look like a higher quality unit overall - with a nicer design and better emulation too from what I've seen - but I do really like the addition of a cartridge slot on my little MD unit and the extra flexibility that allows, so that's a big plus
For what it is, I really like it - it's certainly not on par with the Nintendo equivalent(s) - but it's still just nice to kick back with a mate and play some old classics from time to time
@NaviAndMii@KingMike these 3rd party console can they play both pal and ntsc cartridges, I thought I ask not even NLIFE guys seem to share that info you know when they did the retro console review.
@Horsemeat I'm not sure to be honest...mine was purchased in the UK (PAL region) but I don't know if it is region-locked or anything - I've tested one PAL cart, which worked, but haven't tried a cart from another region myself unfortunately - sorry!
For me they are both great consoles. Back in the day I bought the Sega Megadrive, mainly because I had the Sega Master System (Mark 2), which I in turn had bought because a friend had the NES, and I wanted the best of both worlds (more systems = larger library). Fortunately this friend's brother in law had a SNES, which I could borrow any time I wanted, so I spend a great amount of time playing both Megadrive and SNES games. Both systems have games which I still end up playing these days, though I have to say that I feel games back then were far less forgiving than today's games.
I must say Warsong on the Genesis was my favourite game for the system hands down. The Genesis did nothing wrong, the only criticism I could throw at it is Sega 1st party games were notoriously too easy and dull because of it.
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
