Just wondering how far back everyone's experience with the genre goes.
For me, it's a tie between the 1986 versions of Ultima 1 and Dragon Warrior. Technically Ultima was made in 1980, and the remake didn't change too much, so I guess that would be the oldest, actually.
Funny, I played it to see how it compared to Dragon Warrior, which has similar gameplay, and I have to say, Ultima has aged far better than DW did. Honestly, I think Dragon Warrior would've felt archaic back when it was new. Seriously, Dragon Warrior was the single most monotonous and frustrating game I've played, and now it doesn't even have an excuse! Even the later NES games were mediocre in comparison to Ultima. I still can't believe the series took off the way it did. It seems like you'd need extreme patience to even be able to tolerate it. /rant
Oldest one I've played is Dragon Warrior on the NES, though I didn't get very far at all. And yeah, I agree, it's incredibly dull and frustrating. I'd absolutely love to see a remake on WiiWare.
1982 when I was 11 years old and in the 6th grade. Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord on my Apple II+. We used to map out dungeons and then check each other's maps during 4th period English class. LOL. Ahhh the good old days.
And The Bard's Tale is my all-time favorite Apple II RPG. I still love that game to this very day. Never forget finally getting through Mangar's Tower.

Or at least give us a port/re-release of the GBC remake. That one was pretty fun. I mean, they didn't really change much, but they removed the frustration and prettied up the graphics enough so it wasn't as dull. It was still pretty repetitive, though, and not exactly a game one would want to play for hours on end (so it was better portable game than it was a console game ).
My first real experience with the genre was probably the PC version of Pool of Radiance. That game was incredibly complex and difficult compared to all RPG video games I've played since then; I never completed it, but it had such an open structure that you could spend countless hours just roaming and taking on bizarre side-quests without ever figuring out (or caring) how the primary story might come into the picture.
Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense. Wii FC: 8378 9716 1696 8633 || "How can mushrooms give you extra life? Get the green ones." -

Cool, got any tips?...because I have no clue what I'm supposed to do right now. What does it mean in Wizardry that I need a password?
Are you talking about the castle password from what Werdna told you in that last part of the P.S.? Man that's been a long time ago. I need to dig that out and go through it again.
Lieutenant Commander of the Lesbian Love Brigade
There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
Hmm...I think Final Fantasy I, if we're speaking in terms of the game's actual age. I prefer to play the Origins and DoS remakes because the original hasn't aged well at all; my first actual RPG was a rental copy of Final Fantasy IV, and I think the first FF I actually owned was FFVI.
Dear Sega and Nintendo: a Sonichu game would totally rock, make it happen! Backloggery
Other then that, my second would be FF8, (Never got the Chance to Beat it, it was to Hard)
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...

Nevermind, I figured it all out. I don't think I'll be continuing with it any time soon, though. I spent hours making the perfect party, only for me to lose them all against the first enemy I encountered. I then lost half the people I sent on the rescue team to pick up their bodies. Afterwards I found out that reviving fallen comrads is incredibly expensive, so I had to reinstall the whole game so I could start over again. Now I know to just X out when I see the tombstone screen, and to run from most enemies when I get the chance, but still...it's a little too much for me right now.
Outside of the Pokémon franchise, I've never cared much for RPGs.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
The oldest I've played is probably Wizardry, though the first one I played was likely Ultima III: Exodus, and the first I beat would have to be Dragon Warrior.
NES Dragon Warrior; Bard's Tale II not too long after i think. Unless you count early PC Rogue-likes, some of which had RPG-ish elements (and few of which i recall the names of).
