Topic: Mario Kart Double Dash not starting

Ok so, I just got a Nintendo GameCube today and I bought Double Dash and a Naruto game with it. When I tried playing Mario Kart, it will start up the game, but at the beginning animation when I try to press start, it won’t work. As for the Naruto game, I need to get a memory card. It didn’t come with one. Anyone know why the Mario Kart game isn’t working? Please tell me.

Also the console is Japanese if you’re wondering.

In that video you've got the controller plugged into player 4's port. If you plug it into player 1, the one furthest to the left, does it work?

Also bear in mind that until you get a memory card you won't be able to save any games, but you will at least be able to play them without saving to make sure they work.

Welp, this goes to show how much of a doofus I am 😅. @eel or some other mod, can you close this please? Thank you!

Glad I could help! It's not something we have to worry about any more in these days of wireless controllers.

@CinnamonRobin yeah XD I’m glad I don’t have to worry about that with the Nintendo Switch, but vintage consoles are still really cool.

I feel old when someone doesn't know (Or perhaps has forgotten) that the leftmost controller port is where player #1's controller is plugged into on virtually every mainstream console from the Atari 2600 until the wireless age hit circa 2005. But enough time has passed where most young adults aren't going to be familiar with such a standard (And older gamers not regularly revisiting the past could easily slip up and forget).

The Wii's legacy GameCube controller ports are the only exception in the past 16 years for dedicated controller ports, although at least wired accessories connecting via generic USB ports are alive and well in 2021 for all three console manufacturers.

I'm glad your problem actually wasn't a problem and that it's all up and working for you now.

@Atariboy I'm feeling like maybe one of Sega's 8-bit consoles (one or more variations of the Master System) put the player 1 port to the right of player 2 (though one of the Japanese SG-1000 consoles was even weirder: player 1 controller hardwired like the RF Famicom, player 2 controller detachable)

And of course the PC-Engine and TurboGrafx "one controller port is all you get, even though two ports is standard by now so you'll still need to buy an adapter for that". (I believe the Mini at least was kind enough to give two.)

@Atariboy Yeah, I’m definitely younger than you. Idk how old you are tho, but definitely older than me lol. When I made this post, I just got the GameCube that same evening, so I understandably didn’t know about what went where. But I’m glad you said that now, and if I ever get another old console before the year 2005, I’ll use that knowledge. Thank you! 😁
