Hello all,
I recently found Nintendo game cartridges in spring cleanup. I checked NES and SNES consoles that Nintendo is offering currently but they have pre-loaded games and I don't think they have slots to insert gaming cartridges and play games. I want to play the games in the gaming cartridges that I have from the '90s. Pls, let me know the console that I can buy to play these gaming cartridges that I have and the link to buy the same online.
@Suyogya Nintendo no l onger make consoles that play NES, SNES cartridges. Those mini classic consoles they released in the past few years only played the digital games installed on them, not cartridges. To play those cartridges, you need a NES or SNES consoles(likely used), or there are some companies that have made retro consoles, console that will play NES & SNES cartridges.
Maybe some other nice person here can recommend a retro console, I don't know enough about them to recommend a model.
@2WoomyNNYes Thank you for your reply. I will look for used consoles in this case. I was looking for the original Nintendo console but as you said they no longer make it.
If you weren't aware, demand for game consoles, used & new, has been quite high since the pandemic. So, if you struggle to find consoles, or see higher-than-expected prices, it's because of the pandemic.
You can search for retro game/console stores in your region, if you haven't looked already. In the past 5+ years retro game businesses have sprung up in some places. So, if you hadn't been watching the game market, there may be a new business or two in your area/region. If you know all this, disregard
@Suyogya
You can try Supaboy SFC.
It can play SNES / Super Famicom games in cartridge and for NES / Famicom games , you need a converter from NES / Famicom to SNES.
Good thing from Supaboy SFC, you can play NES and SNES games on the go (portable) and docked to TV.
Here is the review of Supaboy SFC.
There are several routes to go on this. You can try to find an NES, I suggest checking thrift stores, garage sales flea markets, retro game stores and of course the internet. Of course you would need an older TV to hook an original NES up.
@WoomyNNYes Thank you for sharing these details.
I checked some retro consoles on the local website and found below one. Could you pls check and let me know if this model of consol will play my game cartridges? Also, will the quality on 4K TV will be good. I tried NES by Nintendo (Violet and grey one) on TV and I saw too many pixels on it.
@Anti-Matter Thank you for sharing this with me. I wasn't aware that this type of console exists in the market. I checked on Amazon it's selling for 220 CAD
I have to find some cheaper options..
@Suyogya That's the Sega Genesis mini. The original Sega Genesis only played Sega Genesis games, not Nintendo's NES, SNES. That "Sega Genesis mini" is a miniature console that doesn't play any cartridges. It only plays games pre-installed electronically (saved on it's internal memory).(Not what you're looking for)
As far as I know, most or all consoles with the words "mini" or "Classic" in their title cannot play cartridges. They only have games preinstalled electronically. They made them look like the original consoles for nostalgia, but they don't have functional cartridge slots.
@WoomyNNYes Thanks a lot for all your help. I really appreciate it.
I also found another console as below from Retro-bit and I think this one can play original NES®, SNES®, and Genesis® game cartridges. 3 in one.
Pls let me know if I can go for the below one. Also, I noted that the original Sega Genesis only played Sega Genesis games, not Nintendo's NES, SNES and If I go for the below one I can play all three.
Now I am worried abt the resolution. The below one has 720p resolution.
As I mentioned in the previous post, I tried playing Super NES Classic Edition violet and grey colour and the pixels were really bad. I had to sell it. Do you think, this retro-bit will have good quality?
I don't have experience with the retro consoles, myself. However, when I searched youtube for reviews of the RetroTrio Plus, I did see a review by JohnRiggs, who I've seen on Metal Jesus Rock's youtube channel. So, I think he's fairly credible. I've watched Metal Jesus from time to time in recent years. I think he's trustworthy, too, if you see him review any other consoles. https://youtu.be/jfjMM6j3-mw
Regarding resolution on your 4K TV, I think the 720p console is fine. The console is expanding a standard def 480p picture to fill your screen. Having 1080p retro console, doesn't necessarily mean a better image in this case.
If you're ok with JohnRigg's review, you'll probably be ok with the RetroTrio Plus. If you're nervous about it, search for other youtube reviews. Or search youtube for "best retro consoles NES, SNES, Genesis" to see if you see anything that might be better.
@WoomyNNYes - I found another gaming console. Pls let me know what do you think abt this one? This is also 3 in 1.
I was looking for 5 in 1 as I have cassettes of game boy colour as well. But I can't find any five in 1 available anywhere online.
@Suyogya I'm more familiar with the Hyperkin name than RetroBit. At this point, you know about as much as I do. All I would do is search youtube for reviews. I looked, and wasn't familiar with any of the youtubers that have reviews for the Retron 3. So, I'd look for the videos with the most views. It's not a guarantee for the best reviews, but it is a way to narrow down choices. Some of the videos look long-winded. Thank god youtube has the playback speed setting. Jack up the speed to 1.5 or faster if you can still follow them
I did notice youtube user MadLittlePixel pointed out that the Hyperkin Retron 3 HD has a switch on it to change aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9. That might be handy to avoid a stretched picture. I don't know if the Retrobit Trio Plus had that, or not.
Is one I have and rather enjoy for playing NES, SNES and megadrive, I do have all the consoles individually but this is good for slinging on TV's quickly using HDMI and having everything all in one place, you can use your real pads and all your original controllers, I did have some minor issues with it but nothing too much I did a review on YouTube for it just look under my user name and retro trio and you should be able to find it, in general though I think its a good machine.
