I think targeting this to the ultra-casual market (to paraphrase Tommy Tallarico himself "those who consider Animal Crossing a hardcore gaming experience") that have never bought video game hardware and only games that they've played are free, downloaded on a whim on their cell phone, while using characters and branding that only "hardcore" video game players would know (intellivison and Earthworm Jim) is an odd choice.
It's like targeting a movie streaming service towards those who have only watched YouTube videos in their life no movies, using John Ford movies. Or trying to sell a comic series to people who have only read comics on their Launchable comics, based off Watchmen.
With that said, I think it should be by far, the most successful of the "retro" based consoles released this year (pretty much by default), Atari VCS is turning more and more people off by the day and the Evercade is mostly 80's and 90's home consoles with very few A-Tier titles and having shoddy emulation problems. This looks very good and promising compared to it.
I just think it's just a bit of a fool's dream to expect casual's to be excited for a new Ecco the dolphin or remake of Miner 2049er, just because the controller has a touchscreen. Only part of the "3 billion" members of the casual gaming audience I can imagine this really fall heels over this are parents who are scared about internet features on the big 3 and the people who are nostalgic over Intellivision alone and haven't played anything else in about 40 years.
I was reminded of this because of that Atari VCS and I decided to look into this again. Apparently Tommy Tallarino is calling the critics "console racists" and is giving Youtubers rides around in his Ferrari before they get to play the shiny new system.
