So I'm wanting to get into the Paper Mario series before I get the 3DS game coming out soon. Do I have to play them all and in order? Or does it not matter. I would rather just get the Gamecube and Wii one.

Nope not at all! They are all stand alone titles.
Unless there are some throwback hints here and there in later games I can't remember.

I can't remember any...definitely some cameos here and there though. Like Super Paper Mario referencing some TTYD characters.

No no no. You can't skip the N64 Paper Mario. It's a masterpiece. Just $10 on the VC too, and it's a steal at that price.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

So get the N64 on Virtual Console first?

The N64 one is at least better than the Wii one, with the GC one being the best. That's the common view I see. I would recommend it on the VC, it's a good start to see what it's all about.

Thousand-Year Door has a handful of references to the original game and Super Paper Mario is full of little in-jokes and things, but the stories themselves really aren't connected at all so it really doesn't matter what order you play them in. If you only play the latter two games in the series, there shouldn't be too much lost on you.

Alright, sounds good. The only thing is finding Thousand Year Door is pretty hard

Yeah, if your local Gamestop doesn't have one, Amazon should have some great used sellers.
I recommend Amazon because well, that's what I use

You don't need to, but you absolutely should. Paper Mario is one of the best games ever made, PM:TTYD is really awesome and Super Paper Mario is one of the most creative games Nintendo's ever made.

Yeah I've heard great things about the series. I really liked the Mario and Luigi series and I've noticed Paper Mario is similar.

Yeah I had played the N64 one like once at my cousins house when their N64 still worked. I was much younger so I don't really remember, it left a good impression obviously though

Super Paper Mario is one of my favorite games on the Wii and is highly recommended.

RevolverLink

Super Paper Mario kind of drags on in the middle and can get repetitive in spots, but it's still very much worth playing. Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door are both truly great, though.

And no, you don't have to play them in any order.

SPM is one of the worst most disappointing games I have ever read, ever.

I never knew Super Paper Mario was a book.

Me neither wouldn't have bought it had I known that, even a game based on that dang owl from ocarina of time couldn't have been as text draggingly boring as SPM.
