I had this crazy idea ... what if Microsoft offered parents a way to make sure their kids weren't exposed to curing etc. The Kinnect could listen to both the child and the people being played with to detect cursing.
If your kid is cursing it puts your kid in a one hour time out - where the system is unusable for gaming. If the opponents are cursing it could either mute them or kick them out of a child safe part of the live community.
Seems something simple to implement - MSoft would just have to learn what words to listen for.
So much can go on online. If the parents are worried the best thing would probably be to not let them chat with strangers online. It's the simplest and most effective method.
That would work, although cursing is the least of a player's troubles while interacting online.
On that note, this thread reminded me of something from back when I played the MMO Puzzle Pirates. Their swear filter originally converted cusses to piratey things like bilge and pillage, except due to an error one day the filter got reversed. Thus, it converted piratey things which would often be said during gameplay into cusses. Hilarity ensued. watch it go down here, but it's got some rather NSFW language.
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
That would backfire spectacularly, I think. Treat your kids like that and they're going to rebel big time. Try treating them less like they're insolent little whelps to be controlled and more like intelligent creatures to be reasoned with. It can go a long way.
Or parents can actually be parents and not let little kids chat online with strangers. Just sayin.
This. I don't see your approach working out very well honestly. It's the parents responsibility to be aware of what their child is being exposed to, not Microsoft's.
Considering that this is the same company that would censor the word "gay," I don't know about this. I can definitely picture the system unfairly punishing users because they wanted to play on the "Ship" map and Xbox Live misinterpreted it.
Random things including my brother's name are censored. Exactly.
Edit:

That's an intelligent way to raise kids. My less strict, more reasonable teachers are the ones who get along w/ the students best & I think will do the most good. Simply being strict isn't going to do much good.

i'd have to go with this option. i can see it working out much better in the long run tbqh, and it'll be much cheaper for Microsoft too :3

Threw this topic out there for a what if - as it is tech that could happen - I'd say there should be a Live option to not have voice chat if the parent deems necessary - I've heard horror stories of the language being splattered there. No personal experience as I've never had one.
@tchaten I think its a great Idea! I myself would love it where it blocked out people cursing. You can mute a person but I wouldn't want to have to mute my teammates because I would need to hear what their saying like teamwork! I would just like the curse words to be muted. Cuz some people can really get heavy with the curse words. Which I can't stand. But IF I had a child I would not want to keep them from playing. So yeah a good censor would be great! And censoring of a persons emblem would be nice. Because they can be very offensive.

The 360 actually does have an option to disable it, if I remember correctly from when I had one.
@8BitSamurai yeah you can mute a person. But you can't censor curse words. You can just mute where you wont be able to hear the person. Or you can mute everyone in the room.

You can actually disable all voice chatting, or just set it to friends, unless they changed it really recently. Not a very well known feature.
