Cool, thanks, @Morpheel .... EDIT: Found the games they mentioned at E3! Tales of Arise, Elden Ring, Outer Worlds, Bleeding Edge & that Blair Witch game all sounded good Have to look into most of those a bit more to decide for sure, obviously
Evil Within 2 is pretty good, mini open world-like areas to explore, easy to follow story, well balanced.
The first one is a lot more rough around the edges, the story is a bit of a mess, to begin with, it’s a bit infamous.
Of course; the second one continues the story of the first, but you don’t really need to know more than the basics:
A shady company named Mobius created the STEM, a machine that can transfer your consciousness to a computer and generate a digital world, a perfect recreation of the real thing.
STEM needs to use a brain with the correct wavelength as a central unit. But as it turns out, certain profiles are extremely dangerous since psychopaths and the such can learn to take control of the simulation.
As another bad side effect, extreme stress can cause the people connected into the machine to lose control of their consciousness and become monsters. If you die in the simulation you die irl, because of how real it all feels.
In the first game, the central brain was an insane a man named Rubik, who manages to take control of STEM and learns to shape it to his liking, he manages to use this ability to corrupt the simulation, the people who lived in it, and to escape in a new body.
Sebastian, the man character, managed to survive the whole ordeal, but nobody believes any word of of what he experienced, and the company is powerful enough to make his life a living hell.
His partners that entered STEM with him were Joseph and Juli, Joseph kinda went insane inside and disappeared, Juli was a Mobius agent all along.
@BruceCM I haven't played the State of Decay games yet. The Evil Within is old-school survival horror directed by Shinji Mikami. It is not technically polished like Resident Evil 4 but I loved it and the DLC is really good too. It would need some performance, camera and difficulty adjustments to be perfect.
The Evil Within 2 is not an open-world game like some people say but it has open environments and it's not as linear as the prequel. I found the story to be an interesting follow-up. 2 is more fun to play and also less scary. I loved it too, especially because it's more refined as a game and enjoyable as an experience.
The original game is frustrating in the higher difficulty levels, sometimes because of the camera in boss battles and not because of your lack of skills, but still I'd recommend both to any fan of the genre because parts of the original game are amazing.
Thanks, @Morpheel & @BlueOcean .... Seems like there should be enough games to keep me going, then Any other suggestions from anyone are welcome, though, obviously!
@BlueOcean Well, that’s considered an unpopular opinion.
Is it? The Evil Within received generally positive reviews from critics and players upon release. Of course some people hated it but that doesn't make the rest of the opinions unpopular but the opposite.
The general consensus, as far as I’ve heard, is that the first game is a bit of a mess, and that it’s bad rep with players basically killed any chances the second one had of being successful.
Which is shame because the second one fixes and improves on a lot of things.
Don’t worry though, it doesn’t mean your opinion is wrong in any way, shape or form. And I do admit I should’ve used spoiler tags, but it was a bit too late for it by the time I remembered.

I am not worried at all and I am not questioning your opinion either, I am just surprised that you consider unpopular to recommend playing the first game. The reviews were mostly positive and many people liked it. The more common complaints I've read on the forums are about the difficulty (but there are several difficulty levels in the game, fortunately) and performance, both things I mentioned in the first comment. It's rough, it has difficulty spikes and it's not Resident Evil 4 and that can be disappointing, but I wasn't expecting Resident Evil and I enjoyed many things about it. In spite of good sales, the sequel was poorly marketed and many people did not even know that it existed, it was the publisher that didn't believe in the series.
@BruceCM Give me The Evil Within before Alien Isolation or Outlast any day! Anyway, my favourite survival horror series are Resident Evil and Project Zero (Fatal Frame) in no particular order. Silent Hill too but the truth is that I have played all the main Resident Evil games, all the Project Zero games but just one Silent Hill game (Shattered Memories on Wii). I wanted to get the HD Collection which is available on Xbox One but so many people complain about it and say that it's full of bugs and visual art downgrades such as the fog. Have you played that collection @Morpheel? I want to get it but I was expecting some kind of fix or remaster that will probably never happen.
