Sony showed it off at CES 2012. Yes, a new 4K home projector that can push 4096x2160. That's the same resolution that you find in theater's and is 4x the resolution of standard HD. Will the PS4 use 4K? My bet...it's very likely!
I think it would be great to have the 4K as an option, but still keep everything available in 1080p. Like widescreen and HD, it will probably become the norm eventually but until then having the option would be the preferred option.
Talking about resolution, I'm wanting the 720 soon so PS3 games that are third party are 720. I like pretty games...

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
My local cinema is bragging that all it's screens are 8K, but that aside...
The PS4 may well be capable of outputing in 4K resolution, but that doesn't mean that all/many/any games would support it. Unless you have a home screen about the size of a cinema screen you'll struggle to see the difference in picture quality between 1080 lines and 2160 lines at normal viewing distances. Plus the amount of extra gfx power required to fill those pixels could be put to much better use.
