@Grumblevolcano No, the installs are mandatory, you're right about that, but you can play most games as soon as you put the disc in. There are a few exceptions here and there, but most times you can play them straight away.
At this point, it's hard to consider physical PS4/Xbone games anything other than receptacles to deliver digital versions of games. With that said, the speed of installation from disc versus pure digital still makes it the preferable option.
Currently Playing: The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy (PC)
@Ralizah You make it sound like it's just a download code though. The game is still on the disc, and could be played straight from the disc in theory, but you would probably have to deal with awful loading times. So installing the games ensures a better experience.

Provided the files required to play the game are all on the disc and don't require an internet connection, I probably prefer it this way. Disc drives are noisy pita.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
I just have a hard time considering a game "physical" when the disc is pretty much only used to install the game to the hard drive and confirm that the person owns the game in the first place. It's "physical" in a similar way to older boxed PC games. Considering how large games will get in the 4K era, I could see "physical" games becoming even more irrelevant, truly like modern boxed games on PC where the box comes with a disc that redirects you to a downloadable version of the game, or installs so little data that it's physical in name only.
I'm not saying it's an inferior or unnecessary change, though. Switch will only be different in this regard as long as it continues to host games that are small enough to fit on cartridges. And with some third party releases, we're even seeing games that aren't entirely on cartridge. So even Nintendo is subject to this.
I realise that. But nearly all of the installs are < 5 min, which I'm taking as being more or less 'plug and play'.
FF15 and Rise of Tomb Raider are the only exceptions I've found to that. FF15 took about an hour to install for some reason and Rise of Tomb Raider wouldn't let me play until an update had been downloaded.
Okami HD has been confirmed in a Japanese magazine, and is on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One!
Cue the usual nonsense that Sony and/or Microsoft paid to keep it off the Switch...
Out on the 21st of December in Japan and the game shall run in a native 4K resolution; the Standard Edition will cost 2990 yen and Limited Edition will cost 4990 yen. An American and European date is sure to follow at the Tokyo Game Show in the coming weeks.
p.s. As of this morning, Sony has announced their TGS line-up of playable games on the show floor:
Call of Duty: WWII (SIE)
Code Vein (Bandai Namco)
Detroit: Become Human (SIE)
Dissidia Final Fantasy NT (Square Enix)
Dragon Ball FighterZ (Bandai Namco)
Dynasty Warriors 9 (Koei Tecmo)
Earth Defense Force 5 (D3 Publisher)
Gran Turismo Sport (SIE)
Itadaki Street Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary (Square Enix)
Knack 2 (SIE)
Marvel. vs Capcom: Infinite (Capcom)
Monster Hunter: World (Capcom)
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (Level-5)
Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet (Bandai Namco)
Taiko Drum Master: Drum Session! (Bandai Namco)
Yakuza: Kiwami 2 (Sega)
And Microsoft is going to the Tokyo Game Show too, to show off a huge life scale display of a dragon's carcass.
@Ralizah Which absolutely sucks, since the Switch doesn't have much inherent memory, and I don't like being forced to spend more just to play my games...
@Octane Don't be so sure. Okami PS3 looked noticeably worse than the 480p versions since the draw distance and character models weren't upgraded to suit HD.
@Haru17 I'm not disagreeing with you, but I did a fair bit of research a while back as to what people thought of the PS3 version and the Wii version, and I never came across that observation.
Absurdly, I now own them both anyway, but still haven't gotten round to playing either
Did anyone actually play Dishonored 2? I know it didn't sell that well. I still haven't got round to it even though it's really cheap. Saw it for under £10 today.
Then there's that expansion with black lesbian Kano coming out quite soon.

Wait what is this where can I buy it- I mean...I'll have to look that up...on the internet...gotta do some research, since I largely ignored Dishonored 2, due to it looking like a total retread.
