So who's played Starbound yet?

For those not aware, it's the spiritual successor to Terraria*, where you can explore and settle a universe of planets**. You beam down to a planet and into a nice tutorial and begin fortifying your position. From what I've played so far, it really is Terraria with a different setting, save for a few interesting mechanics (again, from what I've played so far, it's standard Terraria fare, but there's a lot I haven't delved into yet).

Firstly, you get hungry. You are required to hunt the local wildlife*** or cultivate crops in order to satisfy a hunger bar.
Secondly, you get cold if you stray away from a heat source for too long.
Thirdly

That's what I've experienced so far. Of course, there's the procedurally generated weapons, furniture to build a more appealing base that you would in Terraria (1.1, at least), not to mention the ability to build machinery and high tech stuff (something I haven't experienced first hand).

The game is currently in BETA and the developers plan to continue to update the game for years to come.

From what I've played so far, it's really quite fun. The beginning is very slow as you work up to basic equipment (on my game I was playing yesterday, to craft something, I needed an unreasonable amount of materials that didn't seem to exist on my planet, but a patch released just a few hours ago apparently fixes this problem. To be honest, I think I was supposed to settle in a bit anyway before aiming for that.

It's currently available on Steam Early Access for £11.99 or your regional equivalent****

* It has the original artist on board.
** People say it's Terraria in space, but technically, and as far as I've seen, the focus seems to be planetside
*** With a weak bow with infinite arrows, in the beginning at least
**** It's also available directly from the website, with a variety of kickstarter style backer rewards

I haven't played it, but I've been following it for a bit, and I can say that I'm pretty excited for it when I can actually buy it, the fall salez man.

I used to travel the stars, then I discovered Earth, and these incredibly addicting things called 'Video Games.'
And they said you couldn't buy happiness!

Ralizah

Sounds like Terraria if it incorporated some of Don't Starve's survivalist elements.

Me and my friend have been discussing this game a few times on Steam chat. He was the one that introduced me to the development of this game and how it is going to shape up in future. Hopefully I'll get to play this and Terraria when I get a decent PC to actually play Steam games again...

3DS games:

Mario Kart 7

Zelda OoT 3D

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

Pokemon Black FC: 2666 2484 8599

Crime doesn't pay, unless you are really good at it then those who are legal criminals ...

Been playing since launch day. Even just in beta, this game offers so much! Everything has a variable and is procedurally generated. You'll see similar body shapes, but very different looking monsters. Every weapon you find will be unique. I can only imagine what this game will be like a year from now, let alone several years down the road. If you're part of any other community site, see if they have a server goin', and start playin'!

Today's story:
For the first time, after 20+ hours of play, I decided to finally visit another planet by myself, besides the one I first landed on and the ones I teleported to with friends in Multiplayer. I could have done this way earlier, but there's just so much to do! Looking through the star maps, I found a moon, a biome which I hadn't seen or been to yet. So I fueled up my ship, traveled through space, and arrived safely in orbit of Alpha Alsciaukat 606 II a. One of the first things I noticed after beaming down to the surface and walking around, was a menacing angry looking beast with huge spikes on it's back, but upon approaching it, it did not attack me. Looks can be deceiving with these new undiscovered alien animals - further down the road, some cute little mice things were vicious jerks who attacked me.
At any rate, circling the planet, I come upon the door of a castle with a Glitch [see: robot] knight standing guard. He tries to talk, and I try to talk, but he attacks me so naturally I defend myself. Upon entering the castle, there are more knights around who attack me, who I must regretfully kill out of self defense. There are plenty of docile regular folk Glitch NPCs though, and they seem to be a very intelligent race, though very robotic in speech. 5 or so floors in this castle, each room filled with books! I read some of them and they have their own politics and trouble with outsiders and history. I found the diary of one Glitch resident - he was different from the rest. He wrote that he dreams. A machine that dreams! He has desires and questions things, is breaking free of the Glitch hivemind. He wants to get off his home world and make a life for himself in the universe.
So after fully exploring the castle and nosing around every storage nook, I took some of their cooler things and circled the rest of the planet, not finding much else on the surface. Tomorrow I'd like mine a bit, see if there are any interesting new blocks or ores deep underground.

Also, something I'm excited about currently:
"pixel banking, creature capture and new content also coming to the balance patch"

CREATURE CAPTURE

A Pokémon that consists entirely of programming code. Capable of moving freely in cyberspace.

@PORYGON Ah, friendly NPCs. I think my planet had two, and I accidentally killed them both. The first died when I tried to break open a coin jar and I one shotted him with a sledgehammer, and another one died as I dropped off a ledge. I didn't see him until I was face to face, but my instincts took over and I ended up caving his skull in as well. Oops.

My planet does have various bandit camps and two consecutive Penal Colonies, so I'm not alone, at least.

I agree though. It has plenty of potential, but even at this stage, it's fun. Then again, it's not in Alpha, like Prison Architect.

I have the Beta downloaded and ready to play. I'm waiting for my sis to get her new computer so we can start it out in multiplayer.
