Wish they made Classic Amy a hidden playable character. SA2 is what got me into the Sonic series, and I've always loved character switching, but moreover the fact that unlocking Amy takes a looong time.
Tee Lopes has uploaded the final version of Studiopolis Zone's music to his YouTube channel. It is set to be featured in the upcoming Sonic Mania Vinyl, which has pre-orders starting in mid-July.
Wow, christian whitehead and co can make a far better sonic game than sonic team can ever do.
Used to be a huge sonic fan since getting Sonic 1 on master system and then upgrading to the megadrive version. Sonic practically died for me when sonic heroes came out, and yes, it was BAD.
Sonic adventure 1 & 2 aren't perfect at all, but, they are memorable.
@kkslider5552000 Sonic Adventure games were flawed but fun and ambitious. This just looks like another mediocre 3D Sonic game.
Still doesn't mean a Sonic Adventure 3 would be any good. That would require Sonic Team actually knowing what made their 3D games work in the first place.
At least Sonic Forces looks like More Sonic Generations, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It may not be ambitious, but at least there's less of a chance that they'll screw it up. Granted, that's not saying much, but I was biting my nails after Sonic Boom.
Anyways, Sonic Mania is already giving me nostalgia-gasms. Is it the 15th, yet?
The Hard Boiled Heavies are really...not there. If its is a returning zone they dont show up at all so it seems to be new only. And Ive already seen the not so subtle hint that a certain robot will overshadow them.
The actual level design is...messy. some stages has loads going on screen and its distracting as hell. Studiopolis Act 2 without doubt was the first offender. Some stages are really bland.
The Special Stages...I like the idea. But damn you turn like a Mustang. The control isnt good on these especially at high speed which you need to be at to win.
The 2nd new zone I came across Press Garden is....dear lord. This level visually and mechanically just screamed "Rom Hack level" and I dont know why. Visually it was...boring and the level structure and mechanics were just...weird.
Some of the bosses are good. Chemical Plant Act 2 was....unique to say the least if long and easy. Studiopolis was pathetic and Flying Battery was tricky. Some of the bosses, like one of the Hard Boiled Heavies...are just boring and dont have much going on. Much more rudimentary so with the better bosses alongside them...ugh. The zone I mentioned above for feeling Rom Hack esque? Bith act bosses are guilty of feeling...cheap and bland.
Musically its great. Visually too except when things get cluttered.
Oh, and I have had the game crash on me in Press Garden Act 2
Its looking like a 6 or so from me if I had to rate it based on how it feels right now. Its got the physics (Sonic feels a liiitle heabier though) right but the rest....hm.

Dunkey loved it, which is nice, but his video wasn't as entertaining as I had hoped.
A question from me, what unique aspects are there in Sonic that set it apart from other platformers? Like try not to be too spoilery but if you could offer some cool aspects about it, that would cool. I'm sort of interested in it, but I'm weary of too many spoilers. I'm also very well aware of how easily I lose interest in games, so I tend to only play games that spark my interest or previously sparked my interest. I've never played a Sonic game so yeah.
If you have never played a Sonic game before (really?!?!), Sonic Mania is a good play as any to start. You have just watched a video by Dunkey showcasing the game so, if that didn’t inspire you to buy the game, then what will? It’s only $20, which is a pretty good price too.
Absolutely loving this. It's exactly what I was hoping it would be.Studiopolis is a brilliant, new zone,I just finished both acts. It's very Sonic 3 & K in design and a joy to explore.Plus the graphics for this stage are amazing.I'm having no problems at all with the Joy-con analogue stick for controlling him either. It passed the Chemical Zone 1 moving platforms test without a hitch so that proves it's up to the task of handling the Blue Blur in the most tricky of situations. My first impression of the Sonic CD style special stage wasn't great but after a couple of go's I quite like it now. He's tricky to handle here but that's kind of the point. The Sonic 3 style special zones are just as they were in the original,at least so far.I liked them in Sonic 3 and I still like them now.The split D-pad is perfect for these stages.
There's so many little touches that will put a smile on the face of any 16 bit Sonic fan.
This is probably a really dumb question, but after just fiddling around for a few minutes, could someone explain what the 'no-save' function is? Is it a way of playing through the whole game as a different character to Sonic without the ability to save? And if so, does this mean you can't switch characters in the main game?
Also, does the game save in-between 'acts' of levels? It didn't seem to do that for me when I bashed through the first whilst messing around.
@LaVelle No save is literally playing through the game without any saving so like before Sonic 3 if you got game over you had to start from the beginning of the game. If you choose a save file it'll be more like Sonic 3 & Knuckles where if you got a game over you could start back at the beginning of the zone rather than the beginning of the game.
So....beaten the game. Got the Super Sonic final boss and...
Okay first off...this game took place on Little Planet? But...Hydrocity and Lava Reef...Oil Ocean....? And why did some zones have transitions between them and others didnt. Like you go from Stardust Speedway to randomly dropping into Hydrocity.
And further to that, Metal Sonic...happened? And who the hell was the actual villain? Was it Eggman or the leader of the Hard Boiled Heavies?
And that Super Sonic battle. What the hell. How do you start flying? Why can they hurt you? Why do you SOMETIMES have a jump dash that consumes rings? What the hell is that fight?
And I can also see why they used so many old zones. With the Exception of Studiopolis Act 1 and Mirage Saloon Actv2 they are either really disjointed, boring or feel like a ROM Hack. And why is Mirage Saloon Act 1 a Sky Chase clone?
And what the hell was that gem? It just...existed. Why was there selectively reality warping time travel things? The plot is so thinly strung that was you do see has no context at all.
Some of the bosses are good. Some are bad. Some of the level designs are good. Some are bad.
Visuals and music are great. Physics feel good. But some of those levels and bosses...man. and screw the special stages.
Overall...god I want to like it you know, but some things just drag this down. Two of the new zones are just bleh and the other two new ones are...okay if cknfused about what they want to be. In fact all 4 new zones do a complete shift between acts.
And seriously. The lack of level transitions at points means we jump from Green Hill to Chemical Plant to Flying Battery and then auddenly Press Garden. Then suddenly Stardust Speedway. Then fade to black and we are on Angel Island? That leads to Oil Ocean? That goes back to Little Planet?
This game. God. All I can do is say the returning zones are fine with ocassional questions. The new zones are hm at best. The context for everything just doesnt exist. And some of the zones dont make sense. Like why does Eggman want to make a tv show and newspaper but suddenly he's after Metal Sonic who is dropped one zone later at which point the Hard Boiled Heavies maaaaybe usurp him?
You know what? 6/10. This game has great moments but the overall package is a total mess
Thanks @Grumblevolcano, I've never been a particularly big Sonic fan so haven't played many of even the earlier and more well-regarded titles in the property. Am having fun with Mania though.
