Recent tactical games like Fire Emblem Awakening and Valkyria Chronicles have these save states that ease the pain of starting the battling process all over again. So is it a traditional sense that you're suppose to play the whole thing without the save states in mind or it doesn't work like that?
I mean I don't know whether the previous Fire Emblem games had this saving feature earlier before Awakening, so idk.
It depends on the game and the mechanics present. Older Fire Emblem games had a simple save state that deleted itself upon reloading the game, but most maps were never too long. Radiant Dawn, on the other hand, has permanent save states, since maps are usually very long and extremely hard. XCOM lets you save as much as you want, unless you enable Ironman, which prevents you from creating a permanent save at any point in the game. I think it should be there, so people can choose what experience they have.

It is nice to have options. I applaud FE Awakening for having that casual mode that accommodates newcomers, but still leaving the normal and hard modes intact. Everybody wins.
Sometimes I feel games like Monster Hunter and Dark Souls should have something similar. But save states are a good way to relieve some frustration.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
I tend to maintain two save states. One is a perfect game which means for FE I'll be replaying missions a lot to keep people alive or get all the treasure chests or support convos.
The other is "I'd like to finish this game in my lifetime" save where I just play...any mistakes that don't totally cripple the game are allowed.
