I happened to notice that there were quite a few colorful and/or cartoon-y shooters on the horizon that I think look really good, most of which I only recently found out about (but more because I don't actually don't go to many other gaming sites very often anymore). So I figured I'd make a thread to list and talk about them, since I know many of us here have expressed distaste for all the brown, gritty shooters there are these days.
So here we go, let's talk about First and Third Person Shooters! Please note, I won't be going all out like Shingi did in the Next-Gen RPG thread, but I figure a link to videos and official websites with a quick summary will do for now:
That video sums up the story well, so I'll just say it's a high-octane third-person shooter with a heavy emphasis on parkour moves to traverse the environments while gunning down your enemies with crazy weapons. Definitely gives off a certain style to it that I like. It came out on Xbox One recently, but I'm leaving it on the list until either it releases on PC, or the developer flat out denies it'll ever lose its exclusivity.
Also: Cinematic Trailer 'cuz it's awesome. Basically, it's a MOBA FPS, but it also has a campaign and story and everything. Which if there's anything MOBAs were missing, it's some form of singleplayer content, IMO, so something like this really piques my interest. In fact, it looks like the natural evolution of Borderlands and Horde mode to some extent, but it's still too early in and my knowledge is a bit too limited to say that for sure.
A team-based shooter that's basically Blizzard's attempt at Team Fortress 2, complete with a colorful cast of characters and a Dreamworks-like aesthetic, but with elaborate sets of powers so it might actually be fun. I'm mildly disappointed that it'll lack any singleplayer (at least for now?), but they're planning for it to be more casual-oriented, so maybe the multiplayer would be fun enough without having to work with a team full of pricks? One can only hope...it's still a ways off, but they're planning a Beta for 2015.
Okay...not gonna lie, this is kinda the main thing that got me to make this thread. It's another Class-based Arena TPS with MOBA elements, but in this case, it focuses on each team having a giant monster that'll join the fray at the finally, which you can power up, attack or steal engery from ( if it's your oppenent's). There are also smaller creatures you can summon, too, though I guess they're more like obstacle/Turrets, really. What I like most (besides the gorgeous art style) is the speed - every character seems to move pretty fast around the battlefield. Reminds me of the good old days of zipping through Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament 2004. It's only in Alpha stage, but I'm already pretty excited to try it out (despite probably being multi-only...)!
I doubt I need to say much here. It's Ninty's attempt at a TPS, and it looks great! I love the different take by focusing on painting, as well as the speed and skills that come with the diving mechanic (whatever it's called ). I'm glad they announced a singleplayer campaign, too, which looks like there'll be quite a bit of platforming and level variety to it.
I'm also tempted to bring up Far Cry 4, though I think there's a bit too much grit there for this discussion. I wouldn't rule it out, though, if a case could be made. Same with Destiny, though that's been out for a while now.
Anybody else looking forward to any of these? Anybody else know of any knew ones I haven't mentioned? Feel free to let us know about them below!
It is nice to see some variety in the genre and with big names behind these efforts. I'm hyped for Overwatch and Splatoon, and now, thanks to this thread, Gigantic. I just have to hope my laptop can adequately run these games...
Sunset doesn't seem like a game I'd care for, at least from the videos I've seen, but when a colorful and ridiculous game is the current flagship for Xbox, it seems like a good sign for gaming.
Just Someloggery
You have the right to disagree with me and the ability to consider anything valid that I say; Please exercise both.
The trend towards colorful games seem to be in these days, that's an awesome thing in my books. Even more semi-realistic titles like Infamous: Second Son and Bayonetta 2 have various shades going on.
I'm looking forward to Splatoon now that I've seen it's single player mode. Sunset Overdrive is the only Xbox One game that I feel I'm missing out on, but to be honest it only really caught my attention because Insomniac made it. I'd certainly pick it up if the next great Sonic Team game is Xbox One exclusive.
↓ And the Resistance series, which I am not much into. The color and fast pace certainly help in this case.
Insomniac also made Fuse.......but, I would have to say that Microsoft has the best exclusives line up this fall, between Sunset Overdrive, FH 2, and Halo: MCC. You can easily argue Nintendo as well, but Hyrule Warriors is kinda "meh" for me....

Yup, Though I wonder if it's companies listening to complains about how everything seemed to look the same, or just artists getting more say in the kinds of games they want to make? Either way it's good for gaming, seeing games that actually look distinctive from eachother with only a moment's glance.
@CanisWolfred I have to say I am not really into shooters all that much but I am more interested in these than I would be your standard army game. I like colourful games and I like cel shading so did look at "Borderlands". It's not on the Wii/U so it's a no go for now and I'm not sure if I'd like it or not. It seems to be the first "colourful" shooter game that I can find although it's just a standard First-Person-Shooter with looting from what I can gather. I know you will already know of this game as your knowledge of games far surpasses mine but thought I'd mention it anyway.
I must thank you for making this thread "Gigantic" looks really fun (thank you for making me aware of it) again although being a shooter and a competitive one I'm not sure it's my thing. I love the idea and just the fact someone made a game like this makes me happy. Sadly I can't see it coming to Wii U ever even if Wii U sold a gazillion units. "Splatoon" on the other hand I have pre-ordered I will give it a go I feel it's worth a shot and I should reward Nintendo for trying something new with my £39.99. "Battleborn" looks nice again can't see it coming to Wii U and I didn't watch the whole video will need to do so later so can't fully comment on it now. The other games I like the look of "Overwatch" but again am doubtful over a release on the U and the "Sunset" game well I saw bits of it in store and online and it's just so obnoxious I couldn't stand to play it.
