This is a thread to spread our love for indie games made with pixel art.

It's difficult for me to put into words but there's something about pixel art that draws me in. Every time a new indie title gets announced I'm hoping it is made in this style and every time I find out it isn't I'm a bit disappointed.
Now, that doesn't mean I don't play other games of course, don't get me wrong. It's just that games made with pixel art have a much easier time to pique my interest.

Part of my love for pixels has to do with me growing up in the '80s - everything was pixels back then - but my feelings go long ways past nostalgia alone. I find they usually control a lot better and thus have much better pure gameplay than other games. They're also often made by real enthusiasts of the art and their love of the games they grew up with, which really shows in the quality of a lot of them.

Anyway, let's talk about our favorites and the ones we're looking forward to, shall we?

My current favorites are:
1. Celeste
2. Hyper Light Drifter
3. Axiom Verge
4. TowerFall Ascension
5. Shovel Knight

The ones I'm looking forward to the most are:
1. Hazelnut Bastille
2. The Messenger
3. Battle Princess Madelyn
4. CrossCode
5. Flynn: Son of Crimson

Maybe you'll play my game if I can finish it one day then
It's a long process, hard work and when you're a really small indie like me that's even more difficult.

If you love pixelart like you say, you'll probably like what I'm doing (32bit X 90's ARCADE style)

PS : you can add at your list, titles like : CHASM or Heart Forth Alicia too

Yeah, I've heard of Chasm and Heart Forth Alicia and I'm definitely looking forward to the latter but it didn't make my Top 5 list . Not fan of procedural generated content though, so I'll probably give Chasm a pass.

I wish you good luck with your game. Do you have a title yet?

Thank you, I'm gonna need a huge luck because you know I almost put all my savings into this project and I'm kind of scared for the future... but yeah, every day is another day, for the moment I'm still working hard on it so...

About the title, yes I do but it's not the moment to reveal that. The story is written, the artstyle is clearly defined, it's playable but not at its fullest (you can run, jump, hit, climb, go to the inventory etc...) there is a lot to do still...

The only thing that I can say for the moment is that it's NOT a "metroivania" but more an action/platformer with RPG elements (XP, level up system etc...) I don't know if you know CADASH from Taito, it's not the same but you can defenitly make a link about the approach.
Action, platforming, RPG elements etc... The only big difference is that in my game it's an original univers, not the classic "knight/fantasy world".

I had to look it up but a modern take on Cadash would definitely be interesting and quite unique. Your game would definitely stand out from the rest I believe. So yeah, I truly hope your project becomes a reality someday and people will love it. Good luck!

To go back on topic though. What are some of your favorite indie games with pixel art? Any worth mentioning you're drawing inspiration from perhaps?

@InnerClimb

Thanks again !

My favorite is without a doubt Axiom Verge. Not about the visuals but the game on its own.
Another thing, Tom Happ was alone, like me, so I have a special feeling about it...

My artstyle is pretty different if I have to compare with other indies... Basically, I'm more on the side of games like those you can find in the 2Ds playstation/Saturn era... I know it's veige but i can't explain better...

Ow, I'm gonna check if I can put the sprite of my character as my avatar, maybe it'd give you a taste of my style

PS : I put my character as my avatar but you don't get the real crisp quality because there is an extrapolation of pixels... :/ but you can have an idea at least !

That is some lovely pixel art you've got there. Thumbs up!
As for Axiom Verge, yeah, that game is a true wonder considering it was made by one guy. Even its soundtrack was made by Tom Happ. Amazing stuff!
Another metroidvania made entirely by one guy is Iconoclasts by Joakim 'Konjak' Sandberg.
You should definitely check it out if you haven't already.

Thanks !

I know for Axiom Verge's music and I know Konjak's work too ! Tom and Joakim are examples for me !

The awesome job of D-PAD studio needs to be credited too ! Savant ascent and Owlboy are fantastic...

@Cobalt
Never been a fan of Savant Ascent myself but Owlboy is indeed fantastic, especially its art and animations.
D-Pad Studio's next game is called Vikings on Trampolines... uhm, yeah... don't know what to make of that.

The Last Night is another game I'm looking forward to but didn't include on my list because I don't yet know how its gameplay is going to turn out. The art in here is absolutely gorgeous though and I love the music from the trailer.

@InnerClimb

The last night is awesome BUT I have a huge problem with this one.

On one side it's gorgeous and on the other one it's not really pixelart anymore and I have to admit that's disturb me a little...

Otherwise, yes the game is impressive !
