Any business is always trying to expand. Sony isn't releasing the NGP in hopes of just feeding off the fanbase it already has.
No company has ever been successful doing that. You either expand or die. Unless you're human.. then please stop expanding, we have enough of those.
Sony wants to compete with Nintendo and Apple. If they aren't competing with those guys and just taking scraps, Sony's handheld division is in trouble.
@Alex.... please don't take that list as a personal jab, it wasn't meant that way.
I'll tell you where I really think NGP is going to be successful, and that is with the guys my age (25-35) who have children and can't get the time to sit down and play a game on the TV. The dual-analog controls, and near nex-gen home console power will offer a console gaming experience in a handheld, and guys like myself (I will be a few months from having a child of my own when NGP releases) who will be drawn to a handheld because they can get their game on while the kids and wife are watching TV.
Also Every Call of Duty fan who can afford the system will be all but guaranteed to by it as well when the game launches.
Having a home console in a handheld is a godsend for many gamers who have young children. There are even multiple website to help gamers find ways to still enjoy their passion for gaming and raise young children as well. I think this is where NGP will truly shine.
.... and just because I can... 13 Days Until 3DS!

@Slappy Congrats on the kid! I don't think core gamers with families will really be a growth area for them. Most families in the US have 2 TVs, so a portable doesn't have that much advantage over a home console. Parents also have less time/money for software for themselves compared to childless singles/couples, even if hardware does well in that demo. Also, that demo would have been equally drawn to the PSP on release, I'd think
They'll be expanding really into the market that has an Xbox, but no portable console. Two analog sticks is just calling to Xbots who have their nose into FPS's all the time. If it sells like the Xbox360/PS3 combined, I think that would be pretty good for Sony.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
Not going to buy it even if it sold for $50 - after all, the games are going to cost too. Portable gaming has moved to the 3D realm. Anything less is obsolete now.

Really? So one handheld is the entire market? Works for me

@Token Girl... sorry, it's planned but hasn't happened yet. Haha
It's true that most homes have two televisions( I've got four), but most are in separate rooms, and small children can't been left unattended while Dad is in the other room playing a game. Pop on some SpongeBob for the little one, and kick back with a portable while the little one is watching his beloved show. It works really well. I've got several gamer friends who use this method everyday.

Sorry, but I disagree. I haven't had the chance to try the 3DS myself yet but I really doubt the 3D is going to add such an amazing new element to gaming that it makes everything else obsolete. Most of the games I plan on buying for the 3DS are old regular DS games and I'll likely play with 3D off most of the time. I'm more excited about what the more powerful hardware can let developers do for games, as the DS was sadly quite limited.
The PSP was a very overlooked system with some really great games.. so as long as they can get it out for a reasonable priced, I'll be interested.
@HeroOfTime007... Those details haven't been ironed out yet. The 3G model will be mainly for use in heavily populated areas that have good 3G support. Mainly Europe and Japan. Americans will likely be better off with the standard model.
