September Quiz - Retro Pixel #4

No backgrounds or unnecessary detail? Instead some old 320x200 screenshot magnified a dozen times until just a handful of pixels vaguely resembling the player character are visible? With its information reduced down to the bare mininum, the Retro Pixel Quiz is a returning classic - and probably a bit easier than last months music round.

There's a bonus question at the end - while there's no additional points to win, you can influence my choices for the next music quiz.

Deadline is Monday the 30th September, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here is the quiz, have fun!

September Quiz - Clues #1

Those pixels are good for you - much fewer people with less than five points this round. I hope you still enjoy the quiz, for now we are 36 people and one from here.

Here are some clues:

1) The games 5 and 11 are graphic adventures.
2) 15 and 22 are exclusive releases on Commodore computers.
3) Title 13 is from a German developer.
4) Number 23 and 24 show you games on an Atari platform.

Deadline is Monday 30th September, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

September Quiz - Clues #2

So, today in a week? Then the quiz is OVER, you have only seven days left to send in your answers or update your existing entry. Even though the average score is much better this round, several games have proven to be extra tough: The 15 and 23? No one got them right! The 20, 21 and 24? Just one correct answer each!
And no participant has gotten to 20 points or more, so the doors are wide open to score a top position.

So far there are 52 users in total, and two from this community.

Here are some more clues:

1) The developers of #15 come from the UK, and this 90s platformer is their only game.
2) The game you see in field 21 has only two levels and loops forever.
3) The titles 9, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 were also released as arcade versions.
4) About number 23: There are several games with this name, all on different systems and released over a span of 14 years... they have nothing in common besides the theme reflected in the name.

Deadline is Monday the 30th September, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here the quiz again, good luck!

October Quiz - Halloween Zombies

It's time for a spoooooky riddle - it's almost Halloween! So here we are, facing 25 games full of dangerous rotten corpses... Some go all out on the undead theme, while other developers just opened all monster drawers they could find.

Have you got the BRAAAAIIINNSSS to solve this quiz?

Deadline is Thursday the 31st of October, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

October Quiz - Clues #1

Some say zombies in media are on the retreat, and I am tempted to agree - really big & serious apocalypses got rare, and any new undead movie in the cinema is either smaller or takes the genre with plenty of humour... they are still easy to implement as video game enemies though, and the overall good participation rate of the October quiz also makes me believe you're not quite sick of the theme yet.

So far there are 57 people playing, but none from here.

Now it's time for some clues:

1) You frequently ride a motorcycle in game number 4.
2) This round is quite modern: There's only three games from the 80s, eight from the 90s, five from the 2000s and nine titles from the current decade.
3) When looking at all the names of this round - there's 9x the word "zombie" and 6x the word "dead"
4) The games 21 and 24 have more in common that just the theme.
5) Thanks to a planning mistake there's now the same game series three months in a row. -_-

Deadline is Thursday 31st of October, please participate via www.retrogamequiz.com

October Quiz - Clues #2

Lock your doors and windows, don't leave the house! It's the nIgGt oF tHe lIvInG dEaD... It is also the last set of clues before this round ends, you only have five days until Halloween. Will some of you make it to the top 10?

Now there are 70 people playing, and two from here.

Well, it's time for the last clues:

1) In Game 18 you are fighting against german Zombies.
2) Game 20 has nothing do to with an "Avenger".
3) Number 10 is neither from Capcom nor from Bethesda.
4) Title 25 is not "Beast Busters".
5) Number 4 is not "World War Z".

Deadline is Thursday 31st of October, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

You can tell I don't play many horror games...

I can see what you were going for with the new scoring system but I agree the old one was better. In the British quiz show Pointless, you have to choose just one question to answer in each round and you get a better score for more obscure answers. So if this was a quiz where you only answered one question at a time, this scoring system might work, but as we're trying to get as many correct answers as possible, it makes more sense to get a whole point for each answer.

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

Yes, we will return to the regular system again. The new system gives people that know a lot an even bigger advantage, and those who only recognise some classics get even fewer points... and with the old system you could tell right away how many answers you got right.

November Quiz coming up this friday!

November Quiz - the damsel in distress

In the past years there were already two riddles with the theme "female protagonists", where you had to guess games where the player characters were women. This month's topic however has a lot less empowerment, as we are only dealing with women in need of saving - the damsel in distress. Be it the abducted princess, a disappeared girlfriend or some helpless girl locked in a cage. As usual the games cover a wide range from classics to obscure indie titles, but you are probably used to that by now.

I hope you enjoy this new round, and where is that title picture from?

Deadline is Saturday the 30th November, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

November Quiz - Clues #1

Thank you Mario, but our princess is in another castle! Even though by now every game has been named correctly at least once, even the best participants so far are still several points short of a full score. Maybe some clues will help? ^_^

So far there are 32 people in total, and no one from here.

Here we go:

1) The following pictures show the intro of the game: 1, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 20, 23 und 25. I'm not sure about number 15.
2) Game one and game three have the same protagonist.
3) Number 13 is a game by Namco.
4) Game 18 is the newest title in this round.
5) Game 24 was not released on consoles.

Deadline is Saturday the 30th November, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

November Quiz - Clues #2

Alright everyone, looks like you only have one week left to join this round, after that we'll determine who managed to save any princesses. The Top 10 starts at 19 points, so there's still plenty potential for all of you to get a nice score.

So far we are 44 participants, two of which are from this community. Currently english and german forums are tied for user count, it's 22 each!

Here are the last clues:

1) The following games also got an Arcade release: 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 20.
2) Number 24 is a 2D Platformer.
3) Number 25 is a 3D Action RPG.
4) Title 21 plays a bit like God of War.
5) These games are exclusive to one platform: 1, 4, 16, 25.

Deadline is Saturday the 30th of November, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

December Quiz - Wishmaster

I believe this time I'm overdoing it with the movie reference, does anyone even remember Wishmaster? No matter - last round you could pick your favourite genre+platform... and I used those entries to create this last quiz of the year! Thanks to some overlap in your most beloved genres there are now titles for over forty users in this round. Here is another twist though:

  • if you correctly guess the game from your genre/platform combo, you get a bonus point.
  • but if you DON'T get the game from your genre/platform combo, you get a penalty (-1 point)!

To not have this rule break the game, it only applies for scores between 5 and 20 points.

I wish (ha!) you good luck and happy holidays!

Deadline is Tuesday the 31st Dezember, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/
