Topic: Monster Hunter: World

I think the new flagship is ugly as sin. Worst flagship design of the series to date. But this is MH. I need the collector edition. The box and the artbook are a must. For both systems- MH collectibles don't come around too often.

Just need that MHXX Switch dock and system now. But I can't afford it. It's marked up by scalpers and I'm already getting the PS4 Rathalos Edition (which will be $525 after paying to forward shipping) and Xbox One X, even though I did snag it for $300 (thanks to $200 in BestBuy reward certs).

I think we have to reserve judgement on Nerg until at least TGS where Capcom have promised further details about it. I mean Gore Magala is just a generic fantasy black dragon until you see its enrage, or the end of the game where it randomly turns golden like a Chain Chomp on Isle Delfino.

We still haven't seen its honest combat animations or where it fits into the environments besides a very tiny screenshot of it in the Wildspire Waste. Nerg could still end up as my favorite monster in the series if we fight it at the same time we do that giant volcanic Gogmazios like Seltas + Seltas Queen. And there is still that tapestry with Nerg emerging from the giant's maw, it might still be a hatchling like fresh-poured lava. That being said, the statue is going to do none of those things, so I don't think I need it.

Speaking of Gore, if it returns I don't want it to be two fights separated by quests. I would want every 10th Gore or something semi-rare like that to dynamically molt into Shagaru and refill its health, the fight would be so much more valuable if it was multiple phases of one creature like Nakarkos and not essentially a subspecies as an end boss.

A Reddit user was speculating about the virus as a dynamic mechanic for other monsters as opposed to just going on quests with already-frenzied monsters. It would be cool if you're fighting an Anjanath, Gore flies over, and its saliva turns ashen and it starts snorting little black-purple motes of virus as it goes into an enrage / frenzy phase. That would serve to sell the contagion aspect of Gore as opposed to just a preset quest.

I have the Monster Hunter Illustrations art books, volumes 1 and 2 (volume 3 hasn't been localized yet). They're absolutely amazing.

So here is Capcom's TGS site for World. They have main stage hunts scheduled on the 23rd and 24th that I read elsewhere were still the two brute wyverns, but that seems unlikely unless they mean to reiterate the information for the first big Japanese event.

I don't know when Capcom mean to break news for the first day of TGS, but I imagine it'll be about the flagship or new zone. It's 6:20 am on the 19th in Japan right now and TGS' opening ceremony runs from 9:30 to 10:30.

I thought Gore was ugly too, tbh. But he actually looks much cooler in game because he has a lot of purple color that shimmers. And then when he goes in the rage mode he just looks wickedly awesome.

But this new flagship is just butt freaking ugly lol. I'm not saying he won't be fun to fight, but he's ugly as heck

Have you thought about getting someone in the US with a GCU account to plug you with orders when you need, and maybe offer to snag stuff from CN and ship to US for them in return?

I am willing to bet even accounting for $20 shipping, you'd still come out ahead if you piled up orders over the span of a few months and then have them ship all at once. I do that for @Sinalefa in Costa Rica. He tells me what to pre-order and order, and I buy it all for him and then when the box is full, I give him a total plus shipping and he paypals me.

I'd maybe start putting the feelers out there for people you could work out a deal with.

Since when did this place become a beauty contest, with all the talk here about the new flagship being ugly.

I'm liking Nerg's design. Sure it's not pretty, but it does look appropriately tough and fearsome for a flagship.

I'm okay with his design, it looks brooding and tough, but for me it just doesn't look unique enough for what I would want from a flagship monster.

Really hope it at least brings in a new mechanic or something, since most of the flagships do that in some way.

Well considering that it's perching on or coming out of an elder dragon, I think there'll be something lol. Let's just hope it's not another status ailment. It's purple and orange and spikey, let's move on.

It seems as if we're getting a more elaborate sea battle with the lava elder dragon unless that whole Titanic-y scene was only a cutscene (And if so why? Scenes like that are always boss fight intros in MH.). Swinging from a ship's rafters onto an elder dragon Black Flag-style would be pretty awesome. It's cool to see how far we've come since the Lao-Shan Lung and then Jhen Mohran setpieces.

Nergigante has a unique mechanic to itself. It regenerates skin and armor as it fights (regardless if you are currently attacking it), fortifying itelf. Resulting in it forming white spikes, which if not broken, will allow it to hit harder. Credit to GaijinHunter for translating this.

Basically, it's a monster that forces you to go aggro with it, or it will maul you.

@Tsurii I'm not a MH expert, but I'm assuming what makes his unique is that he will break himself in order to regenerate stronger. Regardless of whether you hit him or not.

That trailer has got me super excited for this game now. It's a far cry from that first initial trailer they showed.

I'm slating 800 hrs for this on Xbox One X. Another 400hrs on PC whenever it drops. I'm predicting this game will end up being my most played game of all time. Provided there is enough content of course. Being a new game the monster list could be pretty small and given there's no G rank... well... I may need to slash those numbers in half.

I just want to play some Monster Hunter World now... Gosh dang it. [goes back to MHXX... @Joeynator3000 come on, we've got monsters to hunt- I still haven't fought Valphalk and or any of the deviants]

I was wondering what was taking you so long. Stories is fantastic though, so I can't fault you there. A fantastic MH spinoff. Rivals Pokémon and Dragon Quest Monsters for sure.

Think I'm gonna dive into G rank with TeeJay tomorrow. Hope you and zionich put the pedal to the metal. Would be nice to do some 4 player end game hunts.

Who knows, I may just go online and have you guys help me speed through all of it. (I wanna fight Nakarkos alone though, just because, lol)

In any case, Nergigante makes a lot more sense in the Wildspire Waste's lavender wetlands, shoulders hunched, in context. It's definitely a more brute wyvern-y elder dragon, what with those giant battering ram horns sloshing down into the mud as it thrashes its head around. What @Tsurii's strangely confrontational posts misses is that multiple layers of breaks on a monster's limbs have always been purely defensive until now. With Nergigante it looks like it can absolutely skewer you if you're too slow or cautious. This will certainly keep farming sessions on their toes, perhaps to the degree of Dalamadur or Gog (I hope it doesn't devolve into instakills though, those fights are fun but they get kinda random online).

A monster breaking its own parts is really interesting. I have to assume you'll get credit for those breaks because you got resource points in Tri even when monsters killed each other. I assume multiple successive breaks in the same place would stack rewards or they would be de-incentivizing the main mechanic of beating down down its spikes as they pop up.

In any case, I'm pretty satisfied with Nergigante now. It's subtle gray and orange/violate coloration makes a lot more sense with it being a desert monster, bringing back Barroth is a great way to introduce that mechanic to players, and having that many tiny spines on its back is something that they just couldn't have done on the last few consoles that Monster Hunter has been on in the west and it seems very ambitious. I wonder if it will have a flying phase or just stay on the ground all the time like Gore and Diablos. I almost expect it to have some sort of gross deviant form that's spikes are too hard to break like those photos of people who let their nails grow way too long where it would just be covered in bone and totally unable to fly.

Everyone keeps saying that, but it doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Showing the story trailer instead of a gameplay one to announce a Monster Hunter game would be so confusing. They could have dazzled the mainstream gaming mites with a whole bunch of new monsters and areas at once, but they wanted to gradually build up reveals. The community should have assumed it was a Monster Hunter game because sequels in this series generally don't change that much.

Nah, it holds up to scrutiny just fine. The game looks amazing now and it looked mediocre crap when they first showed it off. That's just how it is. It's not about a story trailer or gameplay trailer, it's just about looking good, and when they first showed it off it did not look nearly as good.

As for you saying the community should have assumed it was a MH game, thats a whole different topic of discussion entirely. Capcom has a history of westernizing their franchises in an effort to sell them to the western audience. And given the trailer they showed with machine guns and what appeared to be open world, a dinosaur that looked like it's movement was filmed from claymation, hunter swigging around like Tarzan, and very little actual weapon combat or meaningful gameplay or monster variety... you combine that with the fact the trailer just flat out wasn't that good in the first place and it's no wonder people were questioning this game, including myself. Sequels don't change that much but that's before they wanted to make it a western hit. And all bets are off when companies want to make a game AAA hit. It's actually stuck pretty closely to the core formula- considering how badly they could've marred this game in an effort to sell it in the west I actually consider myself lucky that they only changed as much as they did (not that I like it, but generally speaking I feel like we skated by here relatively unscathed when it could have easily been the downfall of the series as we knew it). Which is awesome cause not every series' identity survives a western push.

I think Nerugigante is growing on me. He's still as ugly as a toilet but, he's actually starting to look kinda cool. I got the PS4 theme with him on it, and I see a lot more coloration than I saw before. He definitely looks mean though. Like he is a no nonsense type of monster.

We need a G rank expansion. That's how they should do it with this game. They can still sell the ultimate edition, that's fine, but why not let the original buyers upgrade to the ultimate version for $20? Heck even $30 if it's content rich enough.
