any idea's on this? i would love to see disco and new wave from either franchises. but this genera has kinda died out only a few years ago. with the potential microsoft buyout of activizion blizzard we could see some great first party music games for the xbox 720. i just want to see something happen in this area of gaming again. agreed?

I think the main problem was it didn't move forward that much. It added drums but it was still the same mechanic, just a different way of imput.
I'd like to see it, because I did enjoy GH. Wait and see.

Guitar Hero ruined that genre for a while. It went from being the focal point of so many parties, to being that thing everyone had but didn't play because it wasn't cool any more.
Perhaps next gen we'll see another music game become wildly popular, but I think the genre is done for a while. They've worn out their welcome with the current population of consumers.
While the games didn't change that much over the years(the biggest game was obviously to play in a band).
But they were very much a one trick pony, and there's only so much you can do with it.
Even though Beatles Rock Band was the best of them all.

I wouldn't rule it out completely, but I think at least in the short term there won't be any new games. As others said above, they thrashed the franchises (particularly Guitar Hero) pretty hard and consumers got burned out.
However, I personally think the games are a lot of fun (especially over a few drinks at a friend's place) and I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a comeback in some form. Like many industries, game genres tend to come in and out of fashion over the years. Take point and click adventure games, for example - for about a decade you'd struggle to find one if you tried, now they're quite common again (and rightfully so!).
I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.
