A year ago from this time I was telling anyone who would listen how terrible the PS4 and XBox One were. I was a Nintendo only guy, and recovering PC gamer. Well for some reason in December I decided to buy a PS4 and a month letter I got a steal on a brand new XBox One ($200). Basically, I am now an equal opportunity gamer. Which has got me thinking about my favorite video games of all time.

1. The Legend of Zelda- This is the game that cemented my love of gaming. It will be hard to ever unseat it as numero uno.
2. The Last of Us (Remastered)- This game changed everything I thought I knew about gaming. I don't think I have ever played a game with a better story. Love, love, love this game. I am going to play it again this December in memory of beating it last December.
3. The Battle of Olympus- Not only is this game criminally underrated, it is one of the most memorable games I have ever played. I would kill for a 3D remake of this game (also this game easily has the best 8 bit soundtrack there is. If you have never played it, I implore you to give it a try on your NES).
4. Castlevania 64- This is a game that got a lot of hate, but I loved it. This is the game that made Castlevania my favorite game franchise of all time. I love the feel, I love the story, I love almost everything about it.
5. Mario Kart 64- This game basically invented couch co-op for me. Lots and lots of fun.
6. Super Mario 64- Three straight on the 64. This game was simple, but was memorable. Everytime I hear Dire, Dire, Docks, I feel like I have stepped back into the 12-year old me. Powerful game.
7. Half Life 2- I am not sure I need to explain this one. Just lots of fun and a solid game all around.
8. Left for Dead- Another Valve entry, and I am kind of surprised by this, but if a game is measured by the amount of fun you have, then this game gets high marks. I use to play this online with my brother and his friends all of the time.
9. Super Mario 3D World- Of all the games for the WiiU this is the one that I think will stick with me for a very long time. Great music and lots of fun.
10. Turok Rage Wars- Another strange choice by most standards, but this is one of the best local multiplayer games of all time. It's graphics have not aged well, but back in the 64's prime this game got a lot of play at my house.

Honorable Mentions: Mega Man 2, Castlevania, Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, Destiny, Bioshock, Mario Kart 8, Ninja Gaiden 2, Wind Waker, and Uncharted 2.

Currently Playing: Dragon Age: Inquisition

RR529

Honorable Mentions: Dead or Alive 4 (360), Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS), Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater (3DS), Paper Mario (N64), Pokémon S/G (GB), Portal: Still Alive (360), Red Dead Redemption (360), SoulCalibur III (PS2), Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii), Tales of the Abyss (3DS)

5. Metroid Fusion (GBA) - This was my first Metroid game, and it got me into the "Metroidvania" genre as well. The moments with the SA-X were so tense, and it was so satisfying to finally be strong enough to face it.

4. Super Mario World (SNES) - Tough choice between this & SMG, but I went with this because it was the first game I have ever beaten. Still just as fun to play today as it was back then.

3. Kingdom Hearts (PS2) - I was getting into anime at the time this was released, and I had grown up on Disney movies, so this game that was mixing the two really piquet my interest (yeah, I know the "anime" elements were Final Fantasy, but I didn't even know about FF at the time, so I just saw the characters as "anime" style people). I had played other RPG's before, but I was playing them because they were Mario or Pokémon games, and I just never gave a thought to the genre itself. THIS, was the game that made me look more into the genre, and encouraged me to pick up #1 on this list.

2. Zelda: Twilight Princess (GCN) - This is the game that got me back into Nintendo. We had been PS2 only all 6th gen, but once I saw the trailers for this, I knew I had to play it. Luckily, my best friend bought it, so I picked up a cheap used GCN (with Melee), and borrowed the game from him. I don't think I had it for even a month, but I was so hooked I spent all my free time on it, and managed to 100% it.

1. Final Fantasy X (PS2) - TBH, it's been well over a decade since I've played this (my most recent experience with it is watching a playthrough of it on YouTube a couple years ago), so this is probably very nostalgia feuled, but this game is very special to me, and it's largely due to the fact that I just happened to play it at the right age.

NOTE: only did one per franchise.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

hooray! another "favourite videogame of all time"-thread

my list actually changed within the last year so here i go:

1. Metal Gear Solid (this has always been on number 1)
-this game can change your life. not only is it super fun to play, but it has an amazing story and the ending is brilliant
2. Metal Gear Solid 5 (new number 2!)
-wow this was a great gaming experience. sure the story had it's flaws but it still touched me and despite all the hate from many other gamers, i actually love the ending. also the gameplay is the best in the series
3. Super Mario Galaxy (one down from second place)
-pure fun. this game has the magic to make you feel like a child again. it puts a big fat smile on your face!

i can not oder the rest to be honest so here are some other games i love:
The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim (new on the list)
Jet Set Radio Future
Half Life
Age of Empires 2
Rollercoaster Tycoon 2
Minecraft
Mercenaries
Halo
GTA San Andreas

My opinions usually change on my favorite game, so here's my favorites as of 11/20/15
5. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - This game is just a master of everything that it wants to do. It's platforming is perfect! The presentation was gorgeous! The score was incredible! The bosses are intense and chaotic! What more needs to be said?
4. Portal 2 - Most of what I said about #5 applies here, but I'm gonna go one step further. The story kept you on edge the whole playthrough! Every area completed kept me nervous about what was coming next. And whenever you start to get comfortable, the game throws another twist your way!
3. Star Wars: Battlefront II (I haven't played the original version) - So much YES!!! I can't find much to fault here. The entire experience can simply described as incredible!
2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - This is the game that got me into Nintendo games! The fighting was so much fun and all of the modes are just FANTASTIC!
1. Tekken 2 - If there's anything this game gets wrong, I don't know what it is.
Honorable Mentions: Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Star Wars: Battlefront

A similar thread was created a couple of months ago on here: - https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/other_gaming/what_are_your...

I shall just copy-and-paste my message from the thread above.

Only started playing games during the PSone and N64 era, therefore the likes of the SNES or Mega Drive doesn't feature anywhere on my top ten list; I was too young to play those!

1) Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
2) Final Fantasy VII (PSone)
3) Rez (Dreamcast)
4) ICO (PlayStation 2) (Shadow of the Colossus is equally as good however, I prefer this between the two)
5) Journey (PlayStation 3)
6) Metroid Prime (GameCube)
7) The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube)
8) Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GameCube)
9) Hotline Miami (PS Vita)
10) The Last of Us (PlayStation 4) (I 'enjoyed' playing the game above more so than this one)

Mario Kart 8 is absolutely brilliant and it would have easily squeezed into my top ten if only it wasn't for the terrible battle mode and the lack of being able to meet up with your friends.

Well, to be fair, SMG2 ISN'T my favorite game, per se. I don't know what my favorite game of all time is, to be honest... but iff I were to get around to creating a list of favorite games, then SMG/2 are definitely contenders.

God first.

Me too.. the only games that will give it a run for the 1st spot are a few old PC games (TIE Fighter, Wing Commander: Privateer, Monkey Island II) and perhaps Lords of Thunder that I played on the VC Many other Wii games will follow, and some GC and Wii U games.

1) Dragon Quest 8: Awesome atmosphere, challenging, tons of exploration, a very fleshed out world with great English vocalization, great story, with several sad moments, tons of content, a great OST, and overall an awesome experience. I cannot wait for it to release in NA.
2) Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door: An awesome, detailed world with lots of secrets, fun turn based combat, cool characters and just a super fun RPG.

I haven't finished enough modern games to have definite modern favourites, but from my high school days the following definitely stand within my favourites:

Monkey Island
Sensible Soccer
Theme Park - just the right level detail, not too much, not too little
Championship Manager
Super Cars 2

You guys had me at blood and semen.

In no particular order and a very subjective and personal list.....

  • GTA Vice City
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Portal 2
  • Link's Awakening DX
  • Pokemon Gen 2
  • Donkey Kong Country 2
  • FTL
  • Super Meat Boy
  • C&C Generals: Zero Hour

Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year

@WaveGhoul:
I don't rate games of that era because I wasn't an NES kid. My first system was the Gameboy but my family had a Sega Master System and a PC. Those were the only systems I played games on until the mid 90s when I got a SNES and my brother got a Playstation. To be honest when I look back on most of the games I played in that era? They haven't aged well. Maybe I'd have a different perspective if I was a NES kid... but I wasn't....

Kinda hard for me to make a list trying to argue that Captain Comic, Chase HQ, The Lion King and One Must Fall are the greatest games ever made. I don't rate them for the same reason that I picked more the modern Mario and Kart over the SNES variants I have a lot more nostalgia for. It's hard to make an argument that they are actually better than what's around these days.

@skywake: Same here.

My first console was a N64 - and eventually a PSone - therefore anything during the Mega Drive or SNES days isn't included on my list as I was only just turned 7 years old when I was gifted a N64 for Christmas back in 1997, along with Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 (I believe it was an official 'Mario bundle' in the UK at the time).

I did play the likes of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Super Mario World on the Virtual Console on the Wii during the numerous empty barren months of nary a (new) Nintendo game to play so, there's that I suppose!

I didn't like the N64 quite as much as my dear old GameCube, in which you can see three games from the one console on my list. I am thinking about taking The Last of Us off of the list to put Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door in its place; that was an amazing game! It's very, very funny too.

Peach64

I don't really have an order, but my 10 favourite games ever are:

Super Mario 64
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Metal Gear Solid
Shenmue
Jet Set Radio
Halo: Combat Evolved
Metroid Prime
World of Warcraft
Portal
Persona 4

I was definitely a gamer in the 8 and 16 bit days, but I just don't love that era anywhere near as much as what came later.

@skywake: Don't feel you have to justify your choices, it's not about best/greatest, just your personal favourites, so nostalgia is perfectly valid in my book.
