@EvilLucario I have been doing that as well, but it seems I missed a ton of stuff when I retread old places

I think I might know which chest this one might be but I'll recheck when I play again in a few hours

Alright I have to ask, does it sometimes feel like flash guards and especially flash dodges are pretty inconsistent? I don't know why, but I feel like it's just weird in timing. I was fighting a boss fight and it seems like it's completely wonky.

That aside, this game really is just so much fun. Utterly addicted right now lol.

I haven't had a chance to really start playing, aside from just getting a save file going. Been spending all week getting my Win 2 set up, but I'm almost done with it so hopefully sometime next week I can start diving in more to YS VIII and Wolfenstein 2.

I feel left out with everybody playing and I still haven't started.

Ugh, just started a dungeon that has some unkillable enemies that take like half your health if they hit you, lol (technically you can beat them, but they just lie down for a few seconds before getting back up with full health).

The name of the game here seems to be to make your way through the dungeon whilst avoiding said enemies if you can.

I'm enjoying the Zelda-esque nature of the dungeons though. In every main dungeon so far you get some sort of "Adventure Gear" that lets you work your way through previously unreachable areas.

15 hours into the game at Chapter 4. Man, this game is so much fun. I've spent like 11 hours total for today and yesterday playing this damn game. Also explored every inch I could.

There's this one treasure chest that's eluding me though. I think it's in Eroded Valley? The map says I've gotten them all with no active chests and I've explored every inch, but I'm still missing one. Do I have to fish for it?

Yeah, I think there is one that you have to fish for, cant be certain it's that area, but it rings a bell. Have you spotted any Herons on the water? That shows there is a chest in the water.

Wow, Towering Coral Forest at night on hard mode is pretty brutal.

I did find a hilariously easy way to grind EXP and skills there, though. Near the save crystal right before the wolf horde at the end, there's a bug nest. Well, spamming Laxia's Eagle Lancer right next to it will simultaneously kill anything around it and summon more of them to come out. So, jumping up in the air, spamming Eagle Lancer 5 times in a row before landing (because you gain mana when killing enemies, especially when targeting a weakness), and then repeating that process over and over allows you to earn thousands of points of EXP over the course of a few minutes. If your HP drops low for whatever reason, you can just run over to the save crystal and heal your party. It's a good, mindless way to grind while doing something else, I think. I'm going to try it while watching TV tonight.

Question abut the Herons on the water i see the shiny i assume it's a chest but i never get it when i fish in that spot?

@EvilLucario, Chapter 4 in just 15 hours!? I'm well over 20 (maybe closer to 30 at this point?) and have recently only started chapter 3. Just out of curiosity, are you ignoring side quests & optional raids?

@Canucksfan989, do you get that same ring of light that you get when you cast at fish? Herons are supposed to be a guaranteed chest, or at least have been in my experience. BTW, you still have to wait for it to bite down like you do with fish.

Also, to everyone reading, it's a good idea to fish whenever you can. There's this stork that shows up and gives you items & upgrades for every 4 or 5 types of fish you give it (you can only give it each type once, and I believe monster fish are an automatic item/upgrade). Kind of think of it like the gifts you get for filling out the map, but in terms of discovering fish. I've even obtained an extra Adventure Gear slot this way

@RR529 No, I've been doing every sidequest and raid thus far. I've also explored as much of the map as I could realistically can without the necessary upgrades.

Yeah, I'm around 18 hours or so and just finished Chapter 3 myself. Do all the Raids + Side Quest, and explore as much as I can... haven't explore that underwater area though, I assume we'll get some sort of ability to breathe underwater hopefully xD

@Ralizah Have you played older Ys games? Ys 2 has a part where you're in the basement of a house, you ring a bell and an infinite monster closet opens up. I just stood in one spot and mashed the fireball magic button with one hand and ate a sandwich with the other. That game punishes the player very severely for being underleveled so I think that grinding spot was dev intended. It's possible that the grinding spot you discovered in Ys VIII is a nod to the older games in the series.

@RR529 Ah okay yeah i just cast at the ring and pull out right away. Also any tricks/tips for the monster fish i see the silhouette but it always says nothing is biting.Or am i casting in the ring to get that monster fish?

Alrighty, 20 hours into the game and just hit Chapter 5.

I think I figured out why I'm missing that chest in the Eroded Valley. I just realized that chests you fish up does NOT count towards the treasure chests said in the map. There's something else within the story that causes them to spawn it seems. Another chest appeared in a later area through that means, so yeah.

Man this mountain is tough! Granted the snakes and those spiny things that roll at you are easy enough, but I'm having quite a bit of trouble with those scorpions, especially in areas that have a bunch of the things.

The last Heat Stone I got was after beating that big spider boss in the dungeon where you get the Glow Stone. Should I have found another by now?

So how are you guys liking the game so far? How would you rate it stacked up against greats like Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

I already have the game, both the physical collector addition and a digital copy (because the game shocked me at how much I liked the beginning and I decided I needed this game on my system at all times), but I just haven't had the time to play... but I'm itching to hear what you people have to say about it

@JaxonH I'm making a small review for the game which will be posted when I'm done with it, but overall I would say it's really good- The battle system is nice, and the graphics isn't as bad (got used to it).

The only bad thing is that the surroundings are same-y and feel stale for me, although it's kinda varied now I think about it? Like jungle, beach, cliffsides, hills, swamps... but they kinda felt the same-ish? Hopefully 2nd half will bring out more types though.

Against XC2... I would say that Ys8 is far, far better in combat than XC2, and the sidequest is comparable (Although I think XC2's character moments in sidequest is better), and the story... hmm, can't say which one I love more until I finish. Both are goooood.

EvilLucario

@JaxonH It's damn good. I think the combat is like a somewhat more clunky, less deep version of Bayonetta though. Killing things is fast and satisfying, but your options for hitting things isn't as varied as Bayonetta, but that's to be expected I suppose. But the clunkiness does hurt the experience a bit. Flash dodges/guards can feel inconsistent at times, so in terms of combat I think that's the biggest problem I have with the game. That and when you're swarmed by a bajillion huge enemies and the camera gets screwed up, that can really be frustrating. Xenoblade 2 isn't as reaction-based, but it also feels much less clunky and it just works better once the ball is rolling.

Soundtrack is good but nothing too exceptional imo. Idk, I just can't really hum it or really have it stick.

Game looks razor-sharp, but at the cost of details and textures. Despite the low resolution of Xenoblade 2 in handheld, I actually think that the added graphical effects and overall look makes up for the low resolution nicely enough to the point both games look around equal to me in handheld. Docked loses to Xenoblade 2, but still it gets the job done and I won't complain.

30fps kinda sucks, but it's no big deal. Timing is no different from doing perfect parries in BotW, which was also 30fps.

The early-game of Ys VIII might beat out Xenoblade 2's early-game, but it's also slow story-wise just like Xenoblade 2.

The reward loop and overall presentation of the game is really addicting though. Despite my complaints, this is definitely a game that's greater than the sum of its parts. It might be one of my top RPGs of the Switch by the end of its life.

It doesn't really even compare. XC2 is a much better game. I'm not a fan of the Bayonetta style combat in a game like this. The world feels too constricted. Game just dorsnt have the quality of a Xenoblade title. Still worth the $47 I paid for it. I will finish it, but probably never play it again after that.

I personally do no notice the difference between 30fps and 60. Combat feels the same as Bayonetta.
