@FishyS It's infinitely worse now that I have a Steam Deck. PC bundles and sales be crazy. I could mostly ignore them before since I knew I'd never bother with most PC games, but now that I have one with the convenience of a Switch, it's like there's a constant war between the logical and impulsive sides of my brain.
Logical side: "You have, like, 200 games you still need to play, and you'll get through maybe 20 in a good year."
Impulsive: "ZOMG THREE YAKUZA GAMES FOR $10?!? SOLD!"
Complete Tears of the Kingdom (everything except Korok seeds and leveling up gear). Then Super Mario RPG and Wonder. Then go back and finish Age of Calamity. Then go back and finish Xenoblade 2. That will probably take me all year. Heck, completing TOTK will probably take me the rest of the year. I've nearly found all of the shrines, and I want to hunt down the rest of the Sages Wills, Lightroots, and gear I don't have. It'll be a sad day when I decide there's nothing left that I want to find in that game.
Recently finished: Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Splatoon 3: Side Order, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD
Currently playing: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
What's next: ?
Resolution: Get Switch 2 and replay BOTW/TOTK/Witcher 3 and others that require DLSS to game. Replay backlogs and get new backlogs. Some of which I need returning to...
Play less Mario Kart to make more room for variety and structure play order around what's already out and what's specifically known for the future rather than what a Direct may bring. I played a gigantic amount of MK8 Deluxe in 2022 and 2023 because of the Booster Course Pass but also in between games when it looked like a Direct or other announcements may happen (that backfired in May as I thought Nintendo may have addressed the barren 2nd half of 2023 very soon after TotK released but instead they gave people a bit over a month to beat TotK before moving onto the big info blowout for the 2nd half of the year).
The other thing is using Switch 2's 3rd party lineup to judge whether I should get a PS5 as well. I said no to the Black Friday sales despite some very good deals given there's so many Switch games I want to play, seemingly credible rumours about PS5 Pro, the 3rd party PS5 games I want to play may very well come to Switch 2 like the FFVII Remake games and Jim Ryan pivoting Playstation to live service stuff being concerning. Having more concrete info seemingly next year will help create an informed decision.
Looking back, I succeeded with the first point considering the only times I played MK8 Deluxe this year was to redeem the Daisy amiibo outfit and to check what a surprise update was about. While Splatoon 3 took over at certain points during the year, I managed to play a load of games overall.
With the second point, not really much to say about Switch 2 3rd party support as Switch 2 is still a complete mystery. I am however leaning more towards no regarding PS5 based on how I'm so spoiled for choice with Switch 1 games.
I remember making a resolution last year to be able to finish my backlog. And now I'm actually close, but mostly due to reasons outside my control causing me to end up receiving a lot less work for my (freelance) job than I was used to over the course of 2024. So always be careful with what you wish for.
In retrospect of 2024 I dabbled in Brigandine and I put a handful of hours in Unicorn Overlord, but I never locked in with either. I never got around to the other games I mentioned. The backlog experienced explosive expansion in 2024. There might not have been very many landmark releases to make 2024 an all-time great year in the hobby, but there were more releases with an aggregate of 80+ than most other years of the Switch's lifecycle.
Don't let anyone try to convince you it was a down year in gaming.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,529 games (as of November 20th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 3 games (as of November 23rd, 2025)
I was just looking back earlier in this thread and saw my resolution was apparently to get some RPGs off my backlog. Well... I got precisely one off my backlog 😆 Dragon Quest Treasures — it was a good game. I also played a couple RPGs that were new so weren't on my backlog such as Denpa Men.
Don't let anyone try to convince you it was a down year in gaming.
Everyone's expectations were weird just because there were so many huge games in 2023. For 2024 I would say it was a bit of a down year for Nintendo first party games or at least average at best, but Zelda still won the year for me personally.
In 2025 I'm gonna (hopefully) finally try Undertale, beat AA: Justice for All and Trials and tribulations (I beat and loved the first one but left it halfway through Justice for All), get into Hollow Knight and play Metroid Prime Remastered before 4 comes out.
And yet somehow I know that instead of that I'm just gonna play through Persona 5 Royal again even though I played 131 hours this year.
Looking back on my resolutions (to try and get into some indie games), I haven't done too badly.
The first half of the year was very busy for me but I managed to try Cuphead and Celeste and love them both despite their difficulty!
I still aim to get round to Undertale at some point and maybe Hollow Knight, I've come to realisation that Metroidvanias just might not be for me but maybe I should give HK a go before denouncing the genre entirely lol
@Novamii I'm with u on yt. they've absolutely ticked me off w nothing to watch and or annoying recommendations. they get creepily too personal (stuff I'm thinking about, not even blurting it out loud so the phone picks up my voice) or cigarette recommendations when I quit a year ago yet they relentlessly won't stop even when I click don't recommend. I'm glad I use an adblocker, f them. it's social engineering, good luck to u.
-mk8dx: get 99k coins, currently at 91,500
-mk tour: get the 'final badge'. 30 1st place wins in tier 99 in ranked, currently at 14
-mk super circuit: 3 star the rest of the retro tracks, 8 cups left of pure hell. got the night screen this week w my new backlit glacier gba
work on my switch backlog I've neglected bc of the mk8dx coin grind. botw, 100% odyssey, metroid dread, dragon quest xi and many more
beat superstar saga (had it as a kid but don't remember beating it, if not I've never beat a jrpg)
I finally have a PC under my TV that's both decent enough and, more importantly, comfortable enough (i.e. not loud or hot) that I feel I'll start to get more into PC gaming again. And not just Civ/Cities Skylines/Beat Sabre. Also the Switch is starting to wind down so I'm on-top of the games I have on there with not many more titles on the horizon. So I expect I'll dive a bit more into my PC backlog this year
If course if/when Nintendo drops the Switch 2 all those plans go in the bin
So what actually ended up happening after this:
1. I found myself generally not using the PC under my TV anyways
2. I moved the newer GPU into my desktop and converted the PC under my TV to a NAS
3. I didn't really tackle my PC gaming backlog although I did finally play through Luigi's Mansion 3
4. Late in the year I got a Steam Deck and I justified it by saying it would be the thing that gets me to get into my PC backlog a bit. My Steam year in review, half of my playtime on PC was on Steam Deck even though I got it in November. But clear the backlog? Nope, not a chance
5. No Switch 2 yet
