The battle with the backlog is never-ending. But I'm telling myself that 2024 is the year I'll play games such as Disco Elysium, Brigandine, and Bayonetta 3. However with games such as Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, OPUS: Echo of Starsong, and Unicorn Overlord on the horizon, where will I find the time?
How are you fairing with your backlog struggle?
Have you convinced yourself to target a game or two in 2024?
Switch Physical Collection - 1,529 games (as of November 20th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 3 games (as of November 23rd, 2025)
My gaming "backlog" will still be the same. buying games and playing a few of them all at once or two to three games for awhile. Same as always
that and saving up money here and there to finally buy myself a Playstation 5 to at least get caught up with the fancy big hitters like Final Fantasy VII Remake games and Final Fantasy XVI and whatever is new for Call of Duty
Play less Mario Kart to make more room for variety and structure play order around what's already out and what's specifically known for the future rather than what a Direct may bring. I played a gigantic amount of MK8 Deluxe in 2022 and 2023 because of the Booster Course Pass but also in between games when it looked like a Direct or other announcements may happen (that backfired in May as I thought Nintendo may have addressed the barren 2nd half of 2023 very soon after TotK released but instead they gave people a bit over a month to beat TotK before moving onto the big info blowout for the 2nd half of the year).
The other thing is using Switch 2's 3rd party lineup to judge whether I should get a PS5 as well. I said no to the Black Friday sales despite some very good deals given there's so many Switch games I want to play, seemingly credible rumours about PS5 Pro, the 3rd party PS5 games I want to play may very well come to Switch 2 like the FFVII Remake games and Jim Ryan pivoting Playstation to live service stuff being concerning. Having more concrete info seemingly next year will help create an informed decision.
Yeah people must have massive backlog with cheap games on eshop, free games from epice, and free games on xbox with sub, also some roms thet haven't got around to playing them. Main thing is to download them for sometime to play. I have olenty of storage, a 4TB external drive for my xbox S and 24 TB HDD for my gaming desktop, 3 empty 1TB micro sd cards for switch
besides getting myself a Playstation 5 next year, there are some Nintendo Switch/Lite things Im going to be busy with in 2024 also
try to finish some of the protosword sidequest junk, level up grinding some more here and there and finally try to deal with the final boss which his final form was a pain to deal with.
that and restart over Xenoblade 2 in the beginning and get the DLC stuff for Xenoblade 2 and Xenoblade 3. Gonna have to get another 128 GB microsd card for that DLC nonsense
Last year was a pretty great one in terms of me trying out stuff I had never given a chance before (highlights including Katamari Damacy, Mega Man and Devil May Cry) so I'm going to go even bigger for 2024; like the madman that I am, I'm going to try (emphasis on 'try') and make my way through (almost) EVERY SINGLE ENTRY in each of the following series:
Metroid (both 2D and 3D)
Classic Mega Man (i.e. 7-11 as I just beat 1-6 this year)
No More Heroes
Paper Mario
Professor Layton (dependent on whether I can get a used 3DS before year's end)
Yooka Laylee
Infamous
Lost Planet
Lego Batman
Classic Castlevania (i.e. CVIII to Bloodlines)
Contra
Baten Kaitos
Pikmin
why yes I am 100% insane for thinking I can tackle all these in a single calender year thank you very much XD
Play a wider variety of games instead of letting Zelda and Xenoblade dominate all my time, including giving a bit more time to the three pillars of Nintendo multiplayer games (Smash, Mario Kart, Splatoon). This will not be easy as I have two Xenoblades left to play on Switch and I won't be done with TOTK this year, but I'll try.
Speaking of which, my resolution since Xenoblade 2 has been in general to not play neverending tedious side content for the sake of extending game time. (with TOTK, I think I'm nearing enough korok seeds to justify being in full "shrines and story and quests only" mode)
Other than the three games I mentioned, specific games I plan to play in 2024:
-Golf Story
-Megaman Zero 3 (...assuming I ever figure out this stupid grapple hook thing in Zero 2)
-Aria of Sorrow replay
-Kirby Star Allies (somehow I've yet to play a Switch Kirby game at all)
-Doom Eternal and/or 3
-Pikmin 4
-No More Heroes 3
-Sonic Superstars
-Super Mario RPG/TTYD
-A replay of one of the two Metroid games
-Mario Golf on NSO
-Probably other NSO games online
-One of the Famicom Detective Club games
-Final Fantasy XII
-Xenoblade Chronicles: DE
Despite this topic appearing in the Switch forum, I'll presume from previous responses that this refers to gaming in general. My list isn't a very long one.
Spending a bit less time gaming in general and giving more time to the folks in my life and other hobbies; the big one is my new infant nephew
Finish saving up for and building a decent PC for gaming and rendering
Cooling it on Switch game purchases for awhile; I have plenty already, and so far this is looking like a good "catch-up" year while we wait for Nintendo's next console reveal
(Of course, a Nintendo Direct might change this lol)
Finally buying and tackling the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC, namely Future Redeemed
Playing through the rest of the modern Ys series per the story path over on Digital Emelas; I'm due to revisit Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana next after watching an online longplay of Ys V
Playing both Paper Mario (Wii U VC) and Paper Mario: TTYD (Switch port) for the first time
Playing a new Fire Emblem title (either Three Houses or Engage) since the last one I played was Shadows of Valentia back in...I think either 2020 or 2021
More Ace Attorney goodness; I'm currently about halfway through Justice For All
IF I can catch up on the Ys series in 2024, I may potentially start digging into the Trails series with Trails in the Sky FC on Steam
Currently playing: Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake (Switch), Hades (Switch)
Finish Tears (not 100% or anything, just beat the main boss). Finishing The Great Ace Attorney II might be a bigger challenge, but that’s my other main goal.
As I've more or less just got me switch and i already have got what you lot call a "backlog". I need to get some more gold cups on mario kart and finish all the levels on mario wonder.
I'm not sure if I'll carry on with fortnite or rocket league and even fifa is on the backburner thanks to pokemon lets go eevee.
I AM ADDICTED TO THAT GAME!!!
What sucks is gaming isn't my only hobby, so I have even less time. If it wasn't for needing a job and paying bills, I would put almost all my freedom into catching up on everything. Being an adult in this currently screwed up world is soul crushing.
1. Beat Sekiro Shadows Die Twice.
2. Get Resident Evil 2 for the Nintendo 64 and beat that.
3. Beat Castlevania III Dracula's Curse.
4. Beat Castlevania Bloodlines.
5. Make HUGE progress in making my game.

This paragraph is so relatable it hurts. I have enough backlogged stuff with gaming alone to stay busy for a solid year at least, maybe two, and my list is under 50 games. Throw in routine chores, errands, keeping up my house/lawn when the weather and seasons permit, regular exercise, cooking + feeding myself, getting decent sleep, and trying to maintain some physical connections with the people in my life, I'm often lucky to get in two hours of gaming most work evenings...and that's if I have nothing else going on. I feel crazy busy enough as a single person much of the time. I don't know how people with a SO or kids thrown into the mix fit any gaming (or other hobbies for that matter) in at all.
Seriously, I have no idea how some find the time to binge play a new game for hours upon hours on end and not have something else to do in that time. Or sleep even. Even if I were to keep myself going with caffeine (I don't try to rely on this much), I'd eventually get a crazy headache from the eyestrain.
Currently playing: Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake (Switch), Hades (Switch)
I got many games I need to beat next year…
Hopefully I can commit myself to beating ‘em all
Metroid Prime: Remastered
Super Mario RPG
Portal 1
Portal 2
Punch a Bunch
Paper Mario TTYD
Metroid Prime 4 (assuming it comes out next year)
Apollo Justice Ace Attorney
Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
Splatoon 3 Side Order DLC
Sonic Fronters Final Horizon DLC
… wish me luck
Pretty much inactive

Currently Playing: Suprisingly, nothing.
Resolutions:
Play a greater variety of games
Beat at least one game 100%
Beat TotK (I haven't even gone to the Regional Phenomena, because, yes, I do need to make a hot air balloon for Mattison, thank you very much [i.e. I love side quests too much])
Play more games with people in person (so not Splatoon lol)
Play more board/card games, not just electronic
