@StephanDLW I'm going to guess April 2020, that September Direct was really weird (extremely quiet about games after November). So I think a more normal Direct will come in November a day before Terry Bogard releases for Smash, we get an April 2020 release for Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and some new games get the mysterious "2020" release window that'll act as our usual fall/holiday titles.

and hopefully my suggestion of having more environmental zoom-outs to see and feel the world better are also part of the remake.

Yes! You can zoom the camera out so much further in XCX and XC2. They need to increase that here!

So, when do you guys think it will be released?

It was apparently started about 6 months ago. I would guess something like this would take a maximum of 18 months, so probably before this time next year (while it's a massive game, they did reuse a lot of assets in the game in order to get it running on the Wii). I'm gonna guess July/August.

I just wanted to step in and say thanks for keeping this thread mostly spoiler-free when it comes to plot details. Some corners of the internet assume everyone has played everything. XD

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

I really agree with this. I think they did a real good job of this; XC2 made a single, better lore out of both games, but both can still be enjoyed fine on their own, mostly. I say mostly because I also think XC had some holes that you could fill in with imagination given the information provided, but that XC2 actually filled in with lore.

Absolutely. I actually think the XC2 ending ironically benefited XC1 more than it benefited XC2, because I think XC1's ending was a total Deus Ex Machina the first time around. The whole sci-fi element of it felt completely out of the blue and unnecessary. XC2 helped fix that. Made it feel a lot more meaningful with everything it added to that part of the lore.

Dezzy's added lore, especially for the other colonies

The other lore thing they should explain that we're never really told (although maybe we're not meant to be because it's just a kind of thematic convenience), is why both XC games take place on the backs of giant titans.
From the point of view of the lore, that's apparently just a massive coincidence. But it seems like that's something they could maybe give an explanation for, so it links both the games.

I thought recent games with Xenoblade character appearances would ruin it, but my main hope is that we all can return to discussing Seven again. Which is more than how many years its been since its North American release btw.

Also, because Seven is actually my favorite party member, but I'm not spoiling Xenoblade to talk about how great Seven is. Not kidding, I went through a huge chunk of the later game just destroying EVERYTHING as Seven, and I adored it.

Took me a while to figure who on earth Seven is. But I got there eventually.

@StephanDLW

I seriously doubt it'll outsell XC2. XC2 will probably cross 2 million at some point in the next year.

Straight remakes very rarely sell more than the original game. This case might be an exception because it's so much bigger now than it was in 2012. But I doubt it'll be twice the sales of the original.

I'd guess maximum of 1.5 million. These kinds of games are still quite niche with the Nintendo audience. Of course we still don't know how impressive this will end up being. Maybe they'll make it look so incredibly that even more people become curious about it.

I agree, there's no way it's outselling XC2. If Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and the Wii U download version didn't exist it might be possible, but this is now the third rerelease in ten years. It's certainly the best one yet, but there's a good portion of the audience that won't want to play it again.

That said, we can expect this to outsell pretty much any individual release of XC1 prior. The original game likely didn't hit a million as that was never announced, but we know it hit at least 500k, so I'd say it's in that range. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is heavily implied to not have outsold the original release, and the Wii U version we don't have a clue but can assume the sales weren't significant. So while I wouldn't be surprised to hear this version outsell all three previous releases combined, that still would likely put it behind XC2 in sales.

According to the VGchartz, the numbers are as follows:

XC1 on Wii: 0.97 million
XC1 on 3DS: 0.56 million (doesn't include digital)
XCX on Wii U: 0.85 million (doesn't include digital)
XC2 on Switch: 1.7 million (includes digital, and matches Nintendo's data)

VGChartz is not generally considered 100% reliable, but their data is often vaguely accurate (when you compare it to officially released figures)

Depends how many people will rebuy it a 2nd or 3rd time. I'm kinda thinking unless it's a massive step-up from the original, only the hardcore fans will probably rebuy it. So it'll just be us and then the newcomers (there are about 1 million newcomers though, if you go by those previous sales numbers)

Actually, depending on how much improvements are made, I can see it outperforming Xenoblade 2 in some way. The allure of it being a completely new game to many people, plus the fact that ports just sell super well on Switch is going to tip that over to a lot of people.

Depending on any potential gameplay tweaks, it might beat out X and 2 for me with the best story AND gameplay. But 1 has my second-least favorite combat system (only above Torna, actually) in the series, so Idk. It just highly depends like if they buff Reyn/Sharla and nerf Agility and the penalties/buffs from ±6 leveled enemies and more.

And the sidequests are just absolute garbage in 1. Much better in especially X and Torna, while 2 was better but still just mediocre in that department.

@Dezzy Don't forget that the Smash crowd has now had two games to become interested enough in Shulk to want to try his game. Sure XC2 got some of that, but XC1 actually has Shulk in it, and this looks far more appetizing to the non-fan than the New 3DS version did. I still don't think it'll outsell XC2, mostly because I think we'll see sales for that game get a boost again if newcomers enjoy XC1.

They could probably touch up the battle system a bit without really changing it. I imagine they'll probably leave it though because most people liked it.

Totally agree on sidequests. There are a few good ones, but it's mostly just fetch quests. XCX and XC2 were on a completely different level with their sidequests.

It'd be cool if they just added a new entire mini-game type thing. Like a card game or something like that. Or even just that Tiger Tiger thing from XC2. Or maybe the mercenary system, but the residents of Colony 6 are your mercenaries.

Here's a flaw in the Xenoblade story that has long bugged me that maybe someone can address:

Why does Zanza look like Shulk? I figured to start with it's just because he was living inside Shulk, so once he escapes, he just still shares the same physical form because it was all he had to work with. But then Klaus looks like Shulk too. Which is before the XC1 universe even existed. And also has the same voice actor. Is there a plausible explanation for this or is it just a big flaw in the plot where they just messed up the chronology?

@StephanDLW

Seems a bit of a clumsy round-a-bout way of achieving his goal, but I guess that's the best explanation.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is my RPG of the decade!
(if nothing better comes out in 2019 or 2020).

It has the biggest and most beautiful open world. And without it, the second biggest open world game (that half of the Xenoblade Chronicles X staff worked on), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, would not have been the way it turned out.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is not only the most epic game in the series in scope, but also a technical milestone in open world games.

The only other RPG this decade that came close to the quality of Xenoblade Chronicles X is UNDERTALE. But I missed a ton RPGs. I love Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna and completed them, but I could let them go while I'm emotionally glued to Xenoblade X. Anyway, I still have to beat Skyrim, and get into Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Octopath Traveller, Tales of Vesperia, Dragon Quest XI, Fire Emblem: Three Houses etc, Ni no Kuni, Diablo III, Dark Souls Remastered, The Witcher III, Divinity II, etc. etc. Any recommendations, before I dive off into Xenoblade Chronicles HD next year?

@SKTTR

Final Fantasy XV was very good once they'd finally finished adding stuff. The PS4/Xbox/PC version that is. You need to read a guide in order to know which order to play it though.

Also, if you liked Xenoblade X, go back and play the Mass Effect trilogy if you missed it.

Obviously none of that is on Switch, but I meant in terms of the best RPGs.

Oh my god, I spent way too much time on Xenoblade 2, and now this will release next year? Prepare for another 200 hours of gameplay... (this is the only game in the series I haven't played, so I have to give it a go)

When do people think we will see more on this? I know they usually do a January/February Direct. Maybe then.
If it's releasing in the first half of the year, hopefully we'll see some gameplay footage at that point. I just wanna see them exploring some of the best areas in the new graphics.
