Topic: Would you buy the "Switch Pro" if this happened?

A $500 successor that isn't backwards-compatible with my physical Switch games? No thanks.

I mean, if it got enough must-have exclusives, I'd buy one eventually, I guess, but that'd be a terrible foundation to build upon for the rest of a generation.

Microsoft is the most pro-digital of the big three, and even their flagship next-gen console supports physical media. No way Nintendo would opt to go digital-only first, if ever.

Unless the "if" is I'm gifted it, no.

This was my opinion before I read the thread, which did the opposite of change my mind.

I'd be fairly confident that Nintendo will be the last of the big three to go download-only.

Both Microsoft and Sony have models on the market for their current generation consoles on the market, as well has having dabbled with it in the past.

However, the versions that support physical media are still outselling them, so they're unlikely to take that step soon. If they're not ready to do so, Nintendo definitely won't be.

I think a couple of things about your premise won't happen.

It is possible to play the Switch on the go, for that to work for Cloud a cellular/mobile router would need to be built in and a subscription would be needed - increasing cost and complexity. Although there are some cloud games on the Switch they are the exception I can't see Nintendo going to Cloud gaming anytime soon.

Secondly a 2K display will suck power from the battery for little benefit, most people can't tell tje difference on this sized display.

I think there is a chance they go digital though. I would get one, if it's day one would depend on the line up of games.

@steventonysmith - Ah, sorry, I didn't understand. I'm really struggling to understand the technology and terms nowadays. I've tried to understand blockchain and NFTs, for instance, and just can't get it. Using the cloud as an optional boost sounds like a good idea if it would just be to help existing owners.

I have a feeling when we see the Switch Pro in a couple more years the landscape of Physical Vs Digital will shift even more towards Digital. Nintendo might make the bold move to make the next Switch successor all digital. I could see a 2k OLED display, 4k60 output when docked and using DLSS to allow it to have ever higher framerates. 256 gb/512 gb/1 tb for base storage with microSD expansion. $499.
I think games that came out for it, 1st party would be properly ported for the next couple years after it launches and then phase to cloud based on the older Switch models. 3rd party would be mostly absent from the Switch except for cloud games.

Would you buy a Switch Pro if this was the route they went?

Absolutely not. I much prefer having an equal mix of physical and digital myself, couldn't care less about performance/graphics specs and only having ports and cloud versions for the first year (with an occasional brand new game here and there) would be absolutely dreadful. At that point, I'd just stick with my regular Switch: huge library, unique gimmick, brilliant 1st and 3rd party support and immediate multiplayer right out the gate.

Probably not because of the digital only side as I focused on physical games for the Switch so it would basically be like starting from scratch all over again. I have a gigantic Switch backlog such that if Nintendo's future pulls a 2013 Don Mattrick XB1 moment, I'd be perfectly fine with just sticking with what I have.

There is no way Nintendo are ditching physical media. They even patented a mini card slot in a card! So I don't think it's happening. But to answer the question. Would I buy a digital only console? Nope.

Yeah, I would totally buy it.
I'm like 90 % digital anyways these days. It's so convinient to have everything on the console instead of having to swap out games.

steventonysmith

@GrailUK
I am sure they patiented the Virtual Boy, and the Wii U, but they abandoned both of those

@steventonysmith You can't blame them lol.

I honestly doubt I will get the next Switch. Most Switch games are available on PC anyways (even so-called exclusives like Octopath and MH:Rise eventually made it to PC) and while there are some great exclusives, they are for me personally not enough to justify buying a new console.

I would consider the switch 2 if nintendo significantly ramps up the quantity and quality of exclusive games.

Here we go again with NintenDoomed comments. Your Desktop PC can't unplug and go portable. Switch pro/whatever called is the Successor what delusion are they talking about here? All digital isn't not what your being told - you do use alot of microSD space going all Digital. $500 successor is going to be more likely backward compatible one wants to think Nintendo would shoot themselves in the foot here? They already have a IP patent called Switch Carts and those don't just come in small size like 16g, 32g but since they are all chips they can make them bigger take the microSD comes now in 1tb and looks just like the other smaller size microSD of few years past. So people's brain seems to get smaller but fail to comprehend the microSD cards will become 2tb format but that tends to out-think their small brains here. This is why those people don't work on upcoming future technology. The upcoming Switch is going to be a upgrade why else would they leverage Nvidia T239 Switch specific chipsets in the latest outing by Nvidia staff that all but confirms there is and was work on the next coming Nintendo Switch successor. But if you read all the NintenDoomed and Gloom you'd thought there wasn't anything new or coming that would come from Nintendo.

To take the question at face value? Probably yes. I'm pretty much entirely digital only already so it wouldn't be much of a loss. I haven't brought a physical game since Ring Fit Adventure. I'd rather them not do this for BC of games I did buy physically and potential EOL bargains but I probably would go for it, especially if offered something else in exchange for removing physical

But in a practical sense I don't see any reason for it to happen. Console makers go digital only as a cost saving measure. Removing the optical drive removes a lot of hardware. But the Switch and it's likely successor for BC use cartridges so there's not really any hardware there to remove! Would be just a way to irritate the most vocal fans with zero gains. So this is a purely hypothetical question I think

Taking the optical drive out of a console isn't saving a huge amount of money. The bulk price of the hardware is probably in the $20-30 region, so Sony would be eating a loss of over $70 with every PS5 DE sold versus the regular model. Ultimately, it could pay off for them if they manage to sell more PS Plus subscriptions as a result of it though, and that's the calculation they'll have made.

In contrast, making a Switch without a cartridge port would probably have savings measured in cents, and there isn't a comparable Nintendo product to PS Plus (don't get me started with NSO) so it would make no sense at all.

I have a switch v2 and I am waiting till I upgrade (eventually) to the OLED version, when I do I am not sure if I will upgrade to the pro just yet, might stick it to the hands on this one lol

I also just watched the "Evolution of Nintendo" on YouTube it was a great watch, brought back many memories so I am highly anticipated for the moment haha

It's not a question if but when it will release all leaks and now Nvidia worker talking about it means it coming. The cart is here to stay Nintendo isn't going to loose this. Going all digital isn't true otherwise why are people getting microSD cards for if it's only digital one wouldn't need this aka Dread Cloud services. As to software using 4k dlss they can write updates for and sure there few games updates later on but then no one is ask to buy it either. No the 4k dlss is coming whether naysayers say otherwise that is the progression that's is to come. But why is it we get so many Debbie Downers when the is 4k Switch on the horizon. You really ask them to explain that to the rest of us- not rant and talking points from NinteDoomed comments only.

Nintendo is not going all-digital any time soon. This is only anecdotal of course, but many parents I know who buy Switch games for their children only buy physical and don't even know you can download games.
