Topic: What Would You Think Of A Controller Like This For Nintendo's Next Home Console?

I was thinking just a Wii Classic Controller Pro, but with analog triggers and pressable analog sticks, but your design is good too. The Wii Remote speaker is a nice touch.

Well, I wasn't necessarily thinking of the controller being used like the Wii Remote. I understand it's a bland kind of design, but I'm also thinking about a fair amount of those in the gaming world and even on this site. While there are a lot of us that liked the Wii Remote and enjoy the Wii U GamePad, there's quite a vocal bunch that don't and even more that look past the potential of those control styles and see only gimmicky waggling and a useless second screen (again, points I don't agree with). Hence why I just plonked motion controls and a pointer in the Pro Controller.

I'm sure Nintendo's ACTUAL controller will be something interesting, but this is what I'd come up with.

I don't think it makes sense to cater to a small vocal minority. The industry has this nasty tendency to ask "Is there an option without motion controls" but not ask "Is there an option to HAVE motion controls?". Nintendo is one of the few companies still asking the latter question.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

I wouldn't say it's a small vocal minority as the PS4 and One have sold quite a bit without motion controls being the focus (No one I know that has a PS4 cares about the sixaxis and the people I know that have a One either never plugged in the Kinect or bought it after Microsoft cut it from the system), but I agree with you on the asking for motion controls point. Which is why I put it in my design.

I was thinking of ways it could be implemented in games like Mario Kart (actually being able to aim where you throw Bananas, Shells, etc.), Metroid (use the IR aim for the camera/reticle and leave the rest of the controls as they were on the GameCube with new functionality opening up for the ZL and ZR buttons), or even Zelda (a particular item (or items) that needs the motion controls to work, much like your equipment in Skyward Sword).

The rest of the standard controller layout would be for third parties and they could use the extra features if they wanted to.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

Well I'm not saying it's a killer feature. Just because a bunch of people bought the PS4 and XB1 without that focus doesn't mean that they don't want that focus. In fact, I'd argue that Sony and Microsoft generally tend to be pretty incompetent when it comes to implementing motion controls. The Kinect speaks for itself, but Sony and their developers have this asinine belief that a unique input should only be used when nothing else should be used. This is why the Uncharted games make no use of motion controls, despite the fact that many people regard pointer aiming to be far closer to a mouse and keyboard than a right stick will ever be.

I really think that, at least for home consoles, the best applications of motion controls come from the wand style controller. You have pointer aiming, you also throw a punch, swing a sword, throw a whip, or all other kinds of motion mapping that really can't be done with something like Sixaxis.

Again, I agree with you. I love my Wii and think that the games that use the motion controls well are great. I just also know what I hear all the time when motion controls are brought up and a lot of people don't like them.

If Nintendo announced that their next home console (not saying that's NX) would use an improved version of the Wiimote and Nunchuck controller style, I'd be all for it.
