Topic: What would you change about Deku Deals?

A couple of weeks ago I got fed up with the lack of filters in the eStore and hit upon the **brilliant and highly original** idea of building a website that would pull together the discounted games from the eStore, and combine them with review data to make it easier to spot cheap games that were actually worth playing.

I built the bulk of it over the weekend, fine tuned it a bit over the week, and then showed it to a friend of mine who said:

"Oh cool, yeah like Deku Deals!"

Me: "Deku..?"

Yeah so my "market research" wasn't very thorough apparently, and I've gone ahead and built a stripped down Deku Deals.

The concept is the same, but I've written my own quality scoring system rather than using metacritic, and each game gets a "value" rating that combines quality and discount level to come up with a score (which I guess is much like what Deku does behind the scenes when you order by "bang for my buck").

It was a fun little project, that I mostly did for my own amusement, so I'm happy enough to leave it on the shelf. However, having built the thing, I wonder if it could be made useful for the community in any way.

So my question is this: is there anything that you want from a tool like this that isn't served by Deku (or by any alternatives that probably exist, but evaded by half-baked market analysis)?

If it feels like it can be made to fill a need then I'll put a bit more work into it and release it. If not, I'll print out the source code, frame it, and hang it over my desk as a monument to hubris.

@ian_beale Does Deku Deals do price alerts? I'm not sure. PSPrices.com does though.

Deku Deals doesn't compare prices across eshop territories. The site I use the most is eshop-prices.com... it lists every eshop price for nearly every game (some things don't seem to work properly though - e.g. Trine Collection cheapest listed as around £30-40, even though it was available for £11.99 in UK; and DLC can be hard to find). Hence most of my eshop purchases are via the South African, Norwegian, Russian or Mexican eshops.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

Yeah Deku does price alerts for specific games, but one feature I was considering that I haven't seen elsewhere would be a "saved search" style alert. So you could say "email me whenever you find action games that are at least 75% reduced, with a quality score about 80". Would that be useful to people?

I imagine that whatever issues eshop-prices.com has comparing across regions, I would probably hit too, so I'm not too keen to go down that road.

The saved search idea seems like a good one. The eshop isn’t the easiest to navigate and if you are looking for games on offer in a less popular genre this would be very useful. I often have issues even finding certain genres to browse through.

Have never used Deku Deals as I have my own personal list of games I want to buy and play. And still the list is very long indeed. But I feel this website should be useful to others who buy bulk or are always on the hunt for the best deals.

A small conversation between Lady Astor and Winston Churchill:

Lady Astor: "If I were your wife I'd put poison in your coffee."
Winston Churchill: "If I were your husband I'd drink it !"
