@kkslider5552000 Yeah, I don't see it. The gameplay is too similar to the point where I think there's a lot of crossover in terms of what the two fanbases want. A Starlink-style game seems like it would easily appeal to both.
Star Fox at it's roots is a level based, high score chasing rail shooter (essentially a 3D evolution of arcade shmups like Gradius, R-Type, & the like) in a deep space sci-fi setting. Even "opened up", it'd probably more resemble a high octane dogfighter like Ace Combat in terms of gameplay. The frantic arcade action baked into it's DNA is an antithesis to the "sim" element of the flight sim you claim it is.
Pilotwings on the other hand (based upon my memories of the 3DS game) is a much more chill paced game centered around relaxing exploration & mini games in a more contemporary setting. While designed to be pick up & play & not nearly as in depth, it's the only one of the two that would probably be considered a light version of a legit flight sim such as, well, Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Yes, you probably could give Star Fox more exploration, or give Pilotwings some more action oriented activities to flesh it out (like racing, which could work in both series on some level), but how exactly those elements would work in both series would vary based on how each one conceptually works.
It almost makes about as much sense as going into the Cruis'n Blast thread and asking them why they're excited for it when Snow Runner already released this year. After all, both games let you drive a truck.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
For me, it comes down from across the board in terms of diversity in setting, characters, tones, and styles.
-3d Mario: It's the main series foundation of platforming
-2d Mario: Simplistic but side scrolling is still a main stay. Find a new art style
-Mario spin offs (Kart, Party, Sport, Rpg) Show us what Mario can do.
-Luigi's Mansion: Luigi in a haunted house for the cartoony horror.
-3d Zelda: Big open grand experience helped with by Monolith
-2d Zelda: More simplistic, straight forward, even paced experience helped with by Grezzo.
-Some Zelda spin off: (crossbow, tingle, warriors, rythm ect) A way to play as other characters.
-3d Metroid: same reason as 3d Zelda by Retro
-2d Metroid: same reason as 2d Zelda. Also Nintendo needs core series as well as simple ones by MS.
Donkey Kong: 3d or 2d, DK can be the more challenging and cinematic counterpart to Mario games with some beat em up elements.
F Zero: We could use some extreme action packed racer in contrast to Mario Karts party experience.
Kirby: A more simple experience that's about puzzle platforming with beat em up elements done by Hal.
Yoshi: Similar although more action based from good feel.
Wario Ware: Strange, Wacky, Shinanigans staring Wario and his friends.
Fire Emblem: Fantasy based tactical rpg by Intelligent Systems
Xenoblade: Action Rpg that mixes sci fi and fantasy by Monolith Soft
Pokemon: Turn based rpg with monsters
Animal Crossing: They need a life sim. They do great and with animals sets them apart from modern sims.
Kid Icarus: I haven't played the games but from what I saw it's more action game styled.
Pikmin: For the real time strategy adventure.
Star Fox: A good space shooter staring animals mixing flying, running and gunning have some appeal.
Smash Brothers: They need a fighter and the crossover look serves them well.
Fit and Brain sims: I get they like the prospect of making exercise and education fun.
Famicom Detective Club: Detectives are popular and solving cases and mysteries give some nice variety to these non realistic games.
I feel 1080, Wave Race, and Excite bike, could all share the same package as some real racers collection.
Splatoon: Definately the go to for multiplayer shooting. The paintball aesthetic works well.
A combination between Punch out and Arms: It's not easy making boxing interesting but I think both together could go far by Next Level games.
Advanced Wars: for modern tactical rpg headed by Wayforward.
I'll also throw in the Gamer Builder Garage for game design program.
I can't say much for Earthbound, Golden Sun, Star Tropics, but that's about 25 IPs for Nintendo to make for a console. Several of them being outsourced by 2nd party and 3rd party developers.
I really wish Camelot would do something other than Mario Tennis and Mario Golf. It's getting tiring. Relegating them to being "the Mario sports guys" and having them work on some of the most boring sports in the world feels like a waste. I've never really been into Golden Sun, but at least that would be a nice change of pace from nonstop dull tennis and golf games.
Also for the love of God Nintendo, ask Next Level games to bring back Strikers. Now THAT'S a Mario sports game that doesn't get dull.
Much though I'd like to see a new Golden Sun, I'd suspect that there's probably more money - and more than enough work to keep them busy - in Camelot continuing to make Mario Sports games.
That said, they've got the golf and tennis games out now and the Switch seems to have a few good years ahead of it still, so we can but hope.
