Definitely play the demo for yourself. Its hard to know whether you'll gel with it until you try it.

I'll say this though. I just started the demo, and the art style is so good, and the story and characters so engrossing, I think I could play through this game on autopilot and still enjoy it based on that alone.

I haven't played enough to form an opinion on the combat, but as some others have said, I think it's just different and takes some time to adjust. Sometimes expectations of what you think a game should/will be based on other examples in the genre can clash with what a game actually is, and it takes time to recalibrate expectations of the experience

I imagine if you beat the demo and aren't sold then it's probably just not for you. But I suspect many who finish the demo, if they give it a chance, will like it by the time they wrap it up.

@rallydefault
Ya, it's definitely different and won't be to everyone's taste (as evidenced by one person being head over heels in love, another being turned off, and ppl like you who fall somewhere in between).

But thats the good thing about the demo. It gives everyone a chance to see for themselves. And if you finish the demo and are like eh... then cool, saved yourself a purchase. But then again, maybe you finish the demo and are like woah! I wasn't sure I'd like this but I absolutely love it!

This is one of those games where I think you really have to play it for yourself, and give it some time to appreciate its intricacies.

@JaxonH good points. Yeah I'll check it out. I know I've mentioned this before, but Advance Wars style of srpg doesn't jive with me unfortunately. And I found that out after playing both AW and wargroove. So we'll see, I'll try to check it out today.

@Ralizah I think this is a game that you really need to play the demo because it looks disjointed, but the demo is like 7 hours so it gives you plenty of time to see if the systems mesh with you. I was gonna buy it no matter what because vanillaware, but honestly after the demo, I'm dropping everything else until I beat it (have it preordered already). It is sucking me in the same way triangle strategy did (even though the systems are different).

Ralizah

@Ryu_Niiyama Ugh, don't say that. You're just gonna make me play the demo, and if it's good in the same way Triangle Strategy was, I'm gonna have to drop everything to play it, and I don't need any more games to play right now.

But yeah, I'll def try the demo soon. Some games you do really need to play to get. The footage has just done it no favors whatsoever for me.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

Ryu_Niiyama

@rallydefault Fair enough. It’s got the same hooks on me but the way UO works is different. I think I cared more about the story and the anxiety making design that making so many decisions gave me vs the tactics (granted I loved the tactics in TS). I have an hour left and I am staring at the timer like an addict. Nooooooo!

@Ralizah I won’t whisper in your ear then….play it…

Can I post in this article comment section where your staff wrote articles about modding and overclocking Zelda Tears of the Kingdom just last year? Was Current gen then, no?

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2023/05/video-overclocked-z...

Just trying to sort out exactly where it's ok and not ok. The comments in that article aren't removed or censored, so I'm going to assume mine won't be either. Since that would be kind messed up to selectively prevent me from partaking in the discussion.

But if that's OK, may I humbly inquire what's the difference here? It's all on the same site right? Or is it a, "we can do it, and we'll allow your discussion then, but you cant" sort of thing? Just curious is all. So hard to keep all this straight. It's okay... then it's not ok. Until staff posts another article about modding and overclocking the next major 1st party gamez then it's ok again... forgive me, I'm just a little confused is all (genuinely).

Btw the note mentions piracy. There was no mention of any piracy. Only my personal purchased eShop games which I can show the receipts for.

So just for clarification, should we, moving forward, direct all our discussion of overclocking to the comment section of the NintendoLife article discussing overclocking Zelda Tears of the Kingdom? I'm ok with that, totally and completely- just need some clarity please.

I loved Muramasa so I feel really bad I've not played any of Vanillaware's other games.

I also feel bad that there's likely no chance this would be the one for me to buy next of their games, if at all.

Vanillaware games tend to be more niche- interesting unique takes on genres that sometimes land more than others. Personally, Muramasa was great. But I wasn't too big on Dragon's Crown. But see, I'm not really a fan of 2D scrolling beat em ups. Streets of Rage 4 was universally praised but I couldn't get into it. Exception being Maximum Carnage on the Genesis. Best 2D scrolling beat em up of all time imo. I need to play Separation Anxiety. Ive never played that one.

But ya, I just grabbed Grimoire Once More digitally. Not sure if I'll like it but I wanna support Vanillaware on Switch, and I've never played a bad Vanillaware game.

And 13 Seninels was 🔥

Any other Vanillaware games on Switch I'm not aware of?

I feel like this is one of the better, if not best videos on Unicorn Overlord I've watched, that is able to successfully convey the appeal and addictiveness of the game and battle system specifically.

I went in with one perspective, and came out the other end with a completely new perspective.

Anyone else questioning whether to get certain games because you wonder if they might run better on Switch 2?

Speaking of which... how does Nier run on Switch? I noticed it's on a good sale so it's tempting me from my wishlist.

@FishyS
I was thinking what if the developers are still cheating in selling their games with lowest cartridge capacity for Switch 2 then force us to download the rest of the game from eshop / code in box treatment again for Switch 2 version but full games in disc for PS5, even Switch 2 have more power than old Switch ?

Ok guys, time to stock up on storage for the coming generation, and perhaps to fit all your Switch backlog on one card

1TB Sandisk MicroSD $89.99

1.5TB Sandisk MicroSD $119.99

@FishyS
Nier Automata actually runs great on Switch. And looks great. I beat the whole game on Switch and half of the second campaign.

No doubt all games will run better on Switch 2 to some extent- any game with framerate drops won't have them anymore. Any fame with unlocked framerate will run at 60. Any game with dynamic resolution will run at the maximum allowed resolution programmed in.

But you can buy on Switch knowing that when Switch 2 comes, any performance issues (be they small or large) will be fixed automatically. For years I avoided certain games on Switch. But now, seeing Switch Pro's benefits and knowing Switch 2 is around the corner and will do the same, I'm not so hesitant to buy.

Like Kingdom Come Deliverance. Normally I'd have skipped that game just because I know it'll be super low res, probably some framerate issues at times. But now? Preordered. Cause I know I'll be able to run it at a locked 30 and without dynamic res dropping.

Of course there's always a chance Switch 2 isn't BC. I doubt that'll be the case but we can't rule it out entirely. Even so, if that happens to be how the cookie crumbles you can just fall back on the Pro for all your performance stabilization needs (but I'd be shocked... no. I'd be amazed if Switch 2 isn't BC).

@JaxonH
I suspect that topic falls into a bit of a grey area so there are rules and the implementation of those rules by moderators is up to moderator interpretation

Kinda like how there are laws in the real world that exist that are not really enforced ever but if you're a piece of work around a cop they can pull it out of their pocket and use it against you. I wouldn't expect to see cops spending their day fining people for jaywalking for example but if you run in front of their car they probably would pull out that card

I mean personally I'm with you here. There have been articles on the front page openly talking about piracy of new releases in the past. I'm not quite sure where that line is either and, personally, I don't think you're crossing it. But when you flirt with the line it's fair game for moderation I think

@JaxonH as I said in my email reply to you earlier this week, you’re okay to discuss that topic within the context of an article. We just don’t allow general discussion about homebrew on current gen within the forums for fairly obvious reasons. I hope that is all the clarification you require.

I take it back, Unicorn Overlord feels like a combo of FE, diofield, and tactics ogre/ogre battle with a sprinkle of grand kingdom to me. Gonna restart the demo!

Just picked up the eShop bundle of Captain Toad and its Special Episode DLC in the recent digital sales and its reminded me of a question I've meant to ask for the past while: when you archive a game for use at a later date, does its DLC also get archived alongside it? I'm planning on playing CT around about April-ish and just want to know if the DLC I grabbed alongside it will be good to go once I get around to redownloading it

When you archive the game it all gets archived including whatever DLC you own. 'archive' just means 'everything but your save data and the game icon gets deleted from Switch'. When you unarchive it just connects to Nintendo and downloads the main game and whatever DLC you own. There is a somewhat hidden way to not redownload DLC (involves pressing L while redownloading) but the default is downloading all the DLC

Captain Toad is an amazing game by the way. I would claim it's a top 20 game overall on Switch. I hope you enjoy it!

Yea so I gave unicorn a quick shot last night. Just isn't my type of srpg unfortunately. There's a bunch in my backlog anyway so I'm not overly concerned.

Mario vs. DK was nice to revisit, the new worlds fit in well and the quality of life improvements made getting 100% completion more fun than the GBA original. I do wish they did Mini Mario amiibo though I get that amiibo is probably coming to an end soon. Side Order amiibo seems likely given they did Octo Expansion amiibo and Splatoon 3’s amiibo approach so far has mirrored Splatoon 2 but I’m not sure there’d be any amiibo after that.

Side Order, I’m not really feeling it at the moment as the final boss is very broken. I get that the gameplay is die a lot and get stronger with each attempt until you finally complete it but even with a lot of Marina’s hacks in place, I find myself struggling with the palettes I have access to outside of Dualies which I managed to just about complete it with. The completion reward is nice though.

As for Unicorn Overlord demo, it convinced me for day 1 purchase though it may end up in backlog given how insanely packed Switch is. The combat seems really fresh and it’s nice seeing when you’re given a choice that the choice has game changing meaning much like Triangle Strategy. A shame the demo is a timer rather than progress up to a certain point though the length still seems fair.
