@Giancarlothomaz I think the cross gen strategy tends to be 'plans change' scenario along development. Usually that involves the current hardware underperforming and a case of jumping ship, but Metroid Prime 4 development starting from scratch could well have delayed it into next console timeline. But I dare say they will appease Switch fans by releasing it on this console as a swan song. So yeah, Metroid Prime 4 could be some sort of cross gen thing. But who knows? The only thing I know for certain is not me!

I could see the successor being announced around E3 time at the earliest for release in 2024 but I doubt they want anything that could slow sales after TotK comes out. I’m getting that oled (the gold joycons look oddly designed enough that it feels legit. Some of the recent joycon designs have been out there. ) so I am already done for next year.

My argument, as it has been here for over 2 years now, is that the concept of the console generation is functionally dead. That there won't be cross generation games because there won't be a "next generation". At least not in the medium term. There will just be some games that aren't compatible with the old hardware

I expect TotK, Prime and Pikmin won't be on that list i.e. they will all be playable on current hardware. But that doesn't mean they'll run best on the current hardware

The Switch is too successful and the architecture is too stable for a hard library reset to make business sense

Of course those things are always possible. Never denying what's possible. But I'm a statistics, probabilities and trends guy. If I see a trend, or something happens 4 out of 5 times, I'm placing my chips on the 80% likelihood, not the 20%

@skywake Nintendo has done twice the cross-gen strategy in they consoles, what make you think now with the imminent launch of Switch sucessor in 2024/2025, they will ditch this strategy?, Nintendo ending the Switch generation and begining it sucessor generation with Metroid Prime 4, it make perfectly business sense, they need a game that could show the changes between Switch and it sucessor(more on it graphical/techinal power, Metroid Prime 4 could be the ideal candidate for that), also Nintendo will not keep Switch in the market forever, one day they will have to release it sucessor, they are looking for the best way to make a smooth transition for them, to avoid another Wii U situation, for Nintendo is crucial is they made the smootly/best transition they could do for Switch to it sucessor.

When you say "cross-gen release" what you mean is a game like Twilight Princess or Breath of the Wild where you get two versions of the same game on the shelf. Yes? On release day you have to decide whether you're buying into the new platform or not. In the case of TP it was for widescreen and controller/storage compatibility, in the case of BotW it was because the game was on a cartridge instead of a disc and also entirely incompatible hardware

In comparison look at late generation Pokemon games during platform transitions. The Gameboy and DS lines were heavily backwards compatible and were always very successful. So what happened there? Well Gold and Silver were "type 2" Gameboy games i.e. they were enhanced for GBC features. Crystal was GBC only but, in most territories, released after the GBA. Then when we got to the DS -> 3DS transition we had Black/White and Black/White 2 release after the 3DS, the latter a good year and a half after

Now with the Switch -> New hardware transition there are only a few things we can super confident about. We can be pretty damn sure it'll be the same form factor & control scheme and given that form factor we know it'll continue to use cartridges. We can be very confident that it'll be again using a Tegra SoC and with a huge library of Switch games and a GB/DS sized user base it would be monumentally stupid not to have backwards compatibility

So no, I don't think there is any real reason to have "cross platform" releases for this transition in the vein of Twilight Princess or Breath of the Wild. I think the hardware is a far, far more compelling buy if on day 1 you can say "here's a HDR patch for Metroid Dread" or "TotK now runs at 60fps with DLSS upscaling 1080p to 4K" or at the very least "all Switch games are compatible and you can use VRR". Certainly a more compelling than "if you want performance mode here's a more different version of TotK, that'll be another $80AU thanks"

@skywake yes that the definition i looking for cross-gen games and i imagine Nintendo could do for the Switch sucessor, they could do this or not, only Shuntaro Furukawa and important Nintendo employees such as Shiya Takahashi know how they gonna deal with the transition with Switch sucessor, at the lastest on TGA 2023 we gonna have our answers about the Switch sucessor if the console release in 2024.

I agree that would be more compelling, but at least imo, unlikely.

Just as PS is selling PS4 games on PS5 full price as a "PS5 version", Nintendo will probably do the same. I'm sure we'll get BC, and the better hardware could ensure dynamic res stays locked and framerate doesn't dip. But I don't foresee them proactively doing more than that. I think Switch 2 versions of Switch games will be sold separately, and they'll have higher target resolutions and framerates.

Of course I could be wrong. We're all just speculating here. But that's what I think.

It's worth noting that the PS4 -> PS5 situation is a tad more complex than that. For a start pretty much all PS4 titles are backwards compatible and amongst those titles there are some that have been straight up patched on PS5 to unlock higher resolutions/refresh rates. This is the level of "cross-gen" compatibility I expect we'll see from Nintendo

But yes, there are also some titles which exist as PS5 only and there are other titles that exist on both PS4 and PS5. With titles that are on both there is a way to "upgrade" the game to the PS5 version. For some titles this is paid for other titles this isn't paid. And this is how Sony handles it, Sony aren't exactly the most pro-consumer company out there

It'll probably be a bit of both. But at a base level, I don't think two versions of the same game will be the norm or even necessary for these titles that straddle the generations. And I certainly don't see it being as brutal as the Wii U -> Switch transition was. Whatever it is, I kinda hope it's nowhere near as convoluted as how Sony has done it

I see crossgen as just games releasing on 2 generations of consoles close to each other if not on the same day. The types of crossgen you have are:

  • Twilight Princess style - 2 separate releases, no upgrade available, last gen version runs on the current gen console for free
  • BotW style - 2 separate releases, no upgrade available, last gen version doesn't run on the current gen console
  • Xbox Game Studios style - 1 release containing both the XB1 version and a free upgrade path to the Series X|S version, the console knows which version to download
  • Playstation Studios style - 2 separate releases, can upgrade to PS5 version for $10, PS4 version runs on the PS5 for free (HFW has a free upgrade path but that was a response to the gigantic backlash about the game originally having the Twilight Princess style release)
  • RE4 Remake style - 2 separate releases, upgrade path is free though if you want to play the PS4 version on PS5 to save having to use up SSD space you can

Prior to the PS5/Series X|S generation the BotW style crossgen release was most common but as a result of Microsoft's massive backwards compatibility efforts, the BotW and Twilight Princess style crossgen releases became more unacceptable so you saw a lot more games use some sort of upgrade path instead with the PS5/Series X|S generation.

Here's what I think the Switch Nintendo published lineup will look like in 2023:

  • January - Fire Emblem Engage
  • February - Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
  • March - Bayonetta Origins
  • April - Detective Pikachu (DLC is most likely to be 2023's mainline Pokemon content so more spinoffs are likely)
  • May - Tears of the Kingdom
  • June - Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp (20th anniversary of Advance Wars 2)
  • July - Pikmin 4 (Pikmin is a good fit for summer)
  • August - Eshop exclusive game
  • September - Metroid Prime remaster(s)
  • October - Golden Sun remake (Golden Sun flows straight into The Lost Age without needing a password)
  • November - New 2D or 3D Mario
  • December - Nothing

That isn't including DLC/updates, naturally there's lots of that present too like I'd guess MK8 Deluxe DLC release months would be:

  • Wave 4 - April
  • Wave 5 - August
  • Wave 6 - December

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika
Obviously that's gonna happen any time you go from a way more powerful system to a less powerful one.

Thankfully I never play my PS5 or XSX or my PC, so it's not an issue I ever deal with. Just Switch OLED and Steamdeck, both have 720p resolutions.

But even on the rare occasion I do, it doesn't take long to adjust. I played on 3DS and PS4 for years, going back and forth. And the gap in graphics between PS4 and 3DS is WAAAAAY bigger than Switch and PS5. People who played PS4 and Vita with cross buy and cross save, ppl who played literally any 7th gen console or earlier alongside a modern power console... lots of ppl play across different platforms with power gaps.

I mean, it is what it is. Nothing you can do about it but accept not all games are gonna look the same, deal with it and move on.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika No, I have trouble going from native 4K 60fps on PC to whatever 4k-ish 60fps or 30fps game the PS5 is running.

But I dont have that issue with going down to Switch. Probably because I was never promised a certain profile thats not always hit.
