And some folks expect this to cost $299 or less? Sounds like an expensive product to me...

I just don't see it being near or less than that price.

If it ends up at $299, I believe that the Nintendo Switch will do quite well!

Well there was rumors that nintendo got an insane deal on the soc.

As for what would be included in the box, Nintendo gave the same answer as they did to Takashi Mochizuki: the main unit, the Dock, the Joy Con detachable controllers (Left and Right), and that’s it. Again, full details about what will be included in the box will be revealed at a later date.

I expect the grip will be included in at least one bundle, if there are more bundles. It doesn't look that expensive after all.

@Peek-a-boo Apart from all the cables, the Joy-con controllers don't look to expensive at all. The grip seems to be more plastic than electronics and the dock only outputs a signal to the TV and charges the system. Most of the price will come from the tablet itself, the rest doesn't look too expensive to manufacture.

I think the Switch will cost £349.99 (the Tesco "leaked" price), it feels like a very expensive concept.

Not a big surprise, but Shin'en is in as well

Octane I wouldn't be surprised if the joy-con as a whole concept includes the middle piece.

Shin'en is a great dev, no suprise, but the confirmation is good to hear.

And you're right, but they did specifically mention ''the Joy Con detachable controllers (Left and Right)''.

BoM guesses:
-Tablet $150-200
-Dock around $30
-S15 per joycon
-$5-10 for the joycon grip
-$20-30 for pro controller

@skywake And it didn't sell because...

Well I'm sure we can all come up with many reasons. But there are two big ones I can think of that the Switch could potentially avoid pretty easily. The first one being that Nintendo struggled to communicate why the Wii U needed the GamePad. With the Switch it's pretty self explanatory. The second issue with the Wii U was that people expected a console of its type to have more horsepower. With the Switch I think people are more likely to understand it being under powered.

Basically what I'm saying is that they're in a good position. I wouldn't be so quick to conclude that the Switch is going to go down the Wii U road with third parties. If it sells? They'll jump on it.

@MarcelRguez Indeed, it might not mean anything, but it's a bit strange indeed, especially given their focus on the home experience. But as they said, the exact specifics on the contents of the box will be detailed at a later point.

BTW, I just had a quick look on twitter. SMD is still running with the original theory to some degree. Now he's running with the theory that the Switch is the "portable" part of the NX. And that the "real" NX is something else down the line.....

Wow.... completely delusional....

I think it is the shield tablet with joy con controllers on the side
to note the the shield tablet had a 1200p screen and when hooked up to a tv can output 4K

@Grumblevolcano No way José, Nintendo can't afford to follow up their overpriced flop with what would inevitably be another overpriced flop that is more expensive than the last one. Especially with Nintendo's reputation in the U.K. as of this century, they can't be anymore than £250 if they want to be successful there.

£350 is insane.

Have a feeling that you're right on that one. That being said, I do suspect that Nintendo might also release another version that doesn't include the dock. As prior discussion mentioned for families, the fact that someone takes the console out with them kinda sucks for the rest of the family. So the possibility you could have one dock at home and multiple units between families could be something they attempt to go for. In that case, I suspect they might release the console without the dock eventually at a cheaper price.

I think £349 might be a bit of a tough sell, but who knows. I'd buy it, but I think that price might be a touch expensive for some. But Nintendo can always go lower if they feel it isn't selling well enough. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they are discussing potential contingency plans of a £50/$50 price drop for holiday 2017 if the opening sales are lukewarm.

@Grumblevolcano £350 would be approx $429 and 392€. Those are PS4 Pro prices. :I
If the tech really is that expensive to manufacture, then I wish they'd just sell it at a loss to get it in as many homes and hands as possible.
Or bundle games with it! That'd fool me. :--D

I'd have to agree with this. Any lower or any higher would have me worried for two different reasons.

  • If the Switch is this cheap, then is it really that powerful?
  • If the Switch is this expensive, how are they going to appeal to the mainstream market?

I've been thinking about this, and you know what? I like it more than I first thought it would. Don't get me wrong, there's still a lot of things that I'd like to know; price, battery life, and some of the controller specs. Do we already know whether the Joy-cons have separate triggers? Anyway, I like the fact that they're doing away with the gimmicky controls. Playing games on the go is their new gimmick, and that's a way better one IMO. Nintendo has always excelled in the handheld space, so the idea of taking big home console games on the go can work out brilliantly for them. Although I personally wouldn't use the feature a lot, I do like the occasional off-TV play that the Wii U offered. And there's the fact that they're now doing something that a PC, console, tablet or mobile can't. You can't play Skyrim on your phone, and a PC can't play Skyrim on the go. I like their new marketing too; a console for people with a busy life, no kids and no grandparents in the trailer. Kids will play anything that adults do, focus on adults and the younger generation will follow. Free marketing essentially.

So yeah, Nintendo surprised me, the concept looks promising and I like their new marketing approach. Octane approved.

@skywake And it's currently Nintendo's most popular video, it just passed the BOTW trailer. Don't know what they're doing, but it works!

I have to agree with everything mentioned here. The way it appears to be being marketed is the right way to go about it, and is what the Wii U should have done from the get go. I'd go as far as saying Nintendo has found their 'blue ocean' once again, just like they did with the Wii.

So uni doesn't seem to keen despite ease of development. And the sky is blueeeeee....

Anyhow @Moshugan @BiasedSonyFan @DefHalan are we surprised they think it's neat and nothing more? May creativity be locked there XD

As for price? I think...hm...£300 is alright, I mean I paid near £350 for a standard PS4...I barely use....

This thing cant be Wii cheap, but it cant be PS4 Pro expensive, unless they really push the fact that all multi-plats here are effectively portable, which when looked at is a big deal.

And I'm working on Pause Menus! I can do interfaces...just not models and textures....

I'm hoping that Nvidia gave them a good deal and that they're saving a bunch of money of on the tech. $299/€299 would be an acceptable price. $349 is pushing it in my opinion. The Nvidia Shield is $199 and comes with the controller. The Shield tablet is also $199 with without the controller. I think that $299 is viable, especially if they got that rumoured deal with Nvidia.

Octane

skywake

It's worth pointing out that the Shield Tablet is basically the same hardware as this just a little bit older. It's an 8" 1080p screen rather than the Switch's 6" 720p screen. It has GPS and dual-band WiFi while the Switch probably won't. It has dual 5MP camera and the Switch probably won't. But it did have 16GB of storage, 2GB RAM and a Tegra K1 in 2014. It had an introductory price of $299US.

Now $299US? That's the launch price of the basic SKU for the Wii U. That's only $50US more than the launch price of the Wii ten years ago. I think people should expect this to cost about as much as the Wii U did at launch. I think that's about where it's going to sit. Except in the UK where the currency is doing funny things ATM. You guys might pay a bit more than you did for the Wii U.
