One possible reason why they haven't unveiled the NX yet. The 3DS is their bread and butter at the moment, to announce a new handheld would cause 3DS hardware sales to take a dive, and software would likely dip a bit. You don't want to be losing sales at this point in the year.
It's a good point, but I think that's what that mini nes is for.
@shaneoh
I'd argue that most of the people who follow Nintendo news already have a 3DS. And if they don't they're not really interested. There's also the fact that a delayed sale isn't necessarily a lost sale. If someone chooses not to get a 3DS now because the NX is launching in March? Well then they're getting the NX. Right? I don't think Nintendo would mind that much at all.

@erv
Could be, although it seems like it's all preordered out, so they don't seem to have produced enough stock to cover the Christmas period. That would suggest that they will be in short supply for a few months after it's released. While I'm certain it costs less to produce than a 3DS, add on development and licensing costs on top of short supply, I'm not sure whether it would do the job of picking up the slack.
@skywake
I see your point and agree, although there may be a reasonable amount of people still considering getting one after all the hype that Pokemon Go has generated, I can't say. Still I don't think they're willing to hurt their 3DS sales this close to Christmas if the NX is a handheld, money is money.
@shaneoh I don't think the NX would impact the 3DS sales that negatively. The system is cheap as is and will receive price cuts over the holidays by retailers. The 2DS in particular will be a large driver - it could go as low as $40 on Black Friday.
I think revealing the NX beforehand could actually provide the 3DS a boost over the holidays, as it will prompt even deeper price cuts by retailers due them trying to clear stock.
@IceClimbers
I see your reasoning, that's another way it could go. Only issue I can see there is that suppliers would be less inclined to order many more units, which would hurt Nintendo if they have an abundance of stock. Of course, in that instance, a couple of months difference wouldn't make a huge difference in units Nintendo could sell to suppliers
@Peek-a-boo But wouldn't it be great, just having weird anthropomorphic dudes with full HD textures and lighting? Very few games go for both bizarre imagery and photorealism, BG&E 2 could really set itself apart that way.
Not for nothing, I'm still excited for WiLD, Ancel. Whenever you get around to saying that game exists again...
@Haru17 I hope there's more to WiLD than just a prehistoric infinite sandbox. Maybe the game is being reworked a bit at the moment, taking some of the critiques into account. I don't want it to end up as No Man's Sky 10,000 BC.
@Octane I wouldn't worry about that. Both of the trailers have shown actual mechanics (riding, taming, animal hacking, hunting, and gathering), which is more than No Man's Sky could ever say.
I am confused, though, as there was an interview that said it was an MMO where you could play as any animal, before we learned that we're controlling a human shaman who can mind control animals. As much as Far Cry: Primal and Mount Your Friends are, I kinda just want a naturalistic survival game where you can play as animals as well as humans and eldritch skeletons.
It's not about getting hardware sales from new software, but overall hardware sales. Announcing a new handheld at this time of year will bring two specific thoughts forward in people's minds:
1."There is a new piece of hardware coming out in a few more months, why buy an old piece of hardware when it is soon to be replaced?"
2."Well the 3DS is going to be replaced soon, I'll wait until it gets the inevitable price cut to buy it."
If the NX is a handheld and was announced tomorrow, it wouldn't surprise me if the next few months of 3DS hardware sales were cut by at least a third, which isn't an insignificant number.
Again, too late. People are already thinking that now that we know of the NX's existence. 3DS is already doomed for both hardware and software sales, there's no sense in prolonging it. Better to maximize the NX's sales than to worry about what's happening to a dying handheld. And even among those that don't know what the NX is, the software lineup for even 3DS and Wii U isn't very compelling sans Sun and Moon (and even then, Pokemon tends not to be heavily marketed by Nintendo so it really doesn't matter). Marketing the NX should be their #1 priority because that's where the most money is at stake.
@Haru17 I suppose it would be a distinctive style of the game goes down a cartoony-but-realistic route, but I feel that that style won't age very well. Asides from the flat simplistic textures, Beyond Good & Evil still looks easy on the eye to this day, thanks to its cartoony art style.
Let's wait and see what the game looks like first!
On another note, wasn't there something that was leaked earlier in the year about the 3DS getting a long overdue price drop before Christmas? In other words, a final big push of sorts for the both the handheld and the two upcoming Pokémon games.
I don't know how much a 3DS is in the US of A, but it is £180 for the new 3DS XL and £160 for the new 3DS, which I think is an awful lot of money for an old-ish system that hasn't had an official price drop for quite some time.
@Peek-a-boo That's some wishful thinking that Nintendo would be dropping the price of it's only potential sales this holiday season. The Wii U is a dead system and it still sells at £250 plus, at a time when retailers are selling Xbox One and PS4 bundles for £150 to shift old stock.

@FragRed It's a combination of wishful thinking and remembering something that predicted Nintendo's line-up back in February earlier this year, whereby one of the main points was the 3DS range having its first price drop since the 2DS came out (in Europe) two years ago.
@Peek-a-boo I think Nintendo will ride the holiday season out with their systems selling at normal price. I think Nintendo would have announced the price drop by now if it were to happen, especially as we are now about to head into holiday season with October only a couple of days away.
