I think it's interesting that for years Nintendo have been criticised for making gaming only devices. When the PS2 did DVDs, when the PS3 did Blu-Rays. When the smartphone came out and it could do games and all the other things. Why would anyone want to buy something that only does one thing? Obviously everyone wants less devices, right?
And now Nintendo appears to be merging their two product tiers. And they're doing so, from what the rumours are suggesting, without compromising either. It's an upgrade for both. Presumably Nintendo's product is still going to be "only for games" but now instead of two there's only one. Guess what? People are complaining about that also. How dare Nintendo make it so you only have to buy one piece of hardware to get all their content! Obviously everyone wants more devices, right?

@MarcelRguez
There's no pleasing everyone because different people want different things. If you had asked me a year ago what I wanted from Nintendo? I would have said more support for the Wii U and a new portable. We're not getting that. If you had asked others they might have said Nintendo should put their games on PS4. Or that Nintendo should make a console 2x as powerful as the PS4. We're not getting that either.
But TBH, I don't see what there is to complain about with the NX rumours as they are. A portable system that's quite a bit more capable than the Wii U? It might not be what some wanted, it's never going to please everyone. But in terms of platforms for Nintendo stuff? It's better than anything available currently.

My idea is a tablet with a game card slot that hooks up to the TV.
If it doesn't have physical buttons, that is disappointing and a lot of people won't like that. If it does have physical buttons then I don't think people will be able to tell the difference to the Wii U GamePad, at least on a conceptual level.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
I'd prefer one console that focuses on one type of game style than an awkward frankenstein that's going to try and appeal to handheld and home console gamers. Two groups that expect different types of games.
My idea is Two circle pads and the buttons are touch and show up via lights on the other side with a 32gb SSD or flash memory in the handheld expandable by SD cards up to 128 GB or more.It will look the wii u controller just without d-pad and ABXY buttons but the ABXY buttons will light up like Tron like.

And yet I'm struggling to think of something on the Wii U that couldn't have been a portable game. Partially because even the ones that weren't "traditional" portable games I often played on the GamePad. Partially because I enjoyed games like Luigi's Mansion and Kid Icarus on my 3DS.
Anyways, the only thing that'll be holding this thing back is the horsepower. Which, according to the rumours, is still quite a bit more than the Wii U. So if you don't have an issue with playing "home console" games on the Wii U? You shouldn't be complaining about the NX. As a concept. Which is all it is currently.
Oh, and I didn't say anything about going the other way around. Playing portable games on your TV. I didn't say anything about that because the VC already exists......

I beginning to think appealing to the tablet market is a good idea..
If a purchaser is after a tablet especially parents who want a tablet for their kids to watch films and play games etc, and for adults to also play games (my mum plays hers and she's 62) then a Nintendo tablet that will have the better games, and an app store, and the ability to link up with TV, makes it a better purchase than say an IPAD or even a cheaper tablet.
This makes the NX the tablet for everyone, almost like the WII was aimed at everyone.
Now imagine an advert with someone playing mario on the bus on their way home, when they get home their friends come round. The NX player detaches the controllers and everyone starts playing just dance. Then the girls all go to the kitchen and the guys look at each other and place the tablet in the doc, and on the TV pops fifa 2017, they grab the new pro controllers from under the TV and start playing.
Then everyone goes home and the NX owner takes the tablet to bed, and stranger things pops up on Netflix as they go to sleep.
Now I know it's all a guess, but all of that entertainment comes from the purchase of what was meant to be a tablet, and with big names/brands attached to it like FIFA, and Stranger things (Netflix) it can appeal to the MASS market.
Gamers DON'T nesecerily have to use a PS4 or XBOX and even if they own one most of them probably use their phones to play games on a lot of the time unless they are playing COD or FIFA with friends.
That's a market (the fifa and COD owners that only play those games) that can be swayed away from Sony and Microsoft as there are millions that have bought generations of playstation and are getting a bit board with with the updates and always revert back to black ops 2 etc.
So the more I think like this, the more I hope this is what it is, as it's actually really useful to me.
Is this what most people are thinking at this point?
@DjLewe78
Even as a "tablet" it comes down to the same old story for Nintendo again. They won't get third party support unless they sell units. So I don't see it really appealing to anyone as a tablet when Android and iOS are a thing. And if it does it'll be for the content that Nintendo produces more than any apps that happen to appear.
It'll probably get Netflix and it'll certainly have a browser. But beyond that I wouldn't hold my breath. Not that I'm saying that's not enough for the people who want a tablet "for games". Because for those people the games that it'll offer will be worthwhile. But for the people who use a tablet as a kind of PC replacement? For the people who aren't really into games on their tablet? I don't think it'll do much to convince them.
Basically, if the NX has Netflix and a big enough screen I won't have any need for a tablet. That's all I use a tablet for. It's a coffee table entertainment device. But for the people who use it for more than that? The NX will fall well short.

Except a Nintendo tablet wouldn't have nearly has much kids content as a cheap android tablet has. And not only that, games are much much more expensive on a Nintendo platform. In fact, they are so cheap, that they can use their allowance to buy them themselves, which also teaches them the value of money at the same time.
And not only that, they can also get other content, such as netflix and other streaming services. It is also easier to find local content for them, so if you are not a native english speaker, you can still find apps suitable for kids.
Let's face it, Nintendo can never compete with those giants in the tablet space. If they start marketing it as such they will fail. They will get beaten on every single content front, including games.
@Therad
I get what your saying, but it will be new product to the market. Nothing else can really do the whole, TV link up and portable gaming machine and tablet thing hopefully as well and as easily as Nintendo can. Plus we still have no idea about the OS that will be on this thing.
IN FACT... That's probably the interesting thing to try and work out now. As let's say Nintendo does give us a watered down android OS along with virtual console. Then this subject is open to a lot more people.
KODI on NX for example? (Ok maybe that's to much to hope for)
EDIT: Say it also connects with your phone so when on the go, your phone stays in your pocket and if someone calls it shows up on NX.
Also you could use the WiFi or 4G on your phone to play/watch online
If the NX is a system that plays most if not all of Nintendo's games on 1 device. Then it will be the best thing yet.
And it'll also be the most densely supported thing yet. Meaning all of the arguments here are moot.
Unless you're in the "1080p60fps-ani-aliasing-poly-depth-occlusion-culling!"-crowd. Then of course you may be be disappointed that it doesn't do calculations better than ps4 thingy, and only three times wii U or whatever.
Third party or no, nintendo could ride that thing out on its own. Not saying they'd want to, but could if they had to.

I get what you are saying, but I think it is too much work for Nintendo. Nintendo is a quite tiny company in comparison with the other players in the tablet market (or the console market for that matter). The only thing they could push is their games. Which means not trying to market it as a multimedia device, because then they will look like a sub-par device.

If you are not interested in portability, then paying 200-300 dollar for a machine that hasn't any new features compared with their current console is a concern. If I spend that kind of money, I want to have something be better than the current offering. If the games could be on the Wii U, it would feel more like a forced upgrade than anything else.
