There are two things you said I'd disagree with. The first one is whether or not the power of this thing even matters. Would it have mattered if this was a home console? Sure. But if it's Tegra based then it's not really a home console. Even if you plug it into your TV it's going to be such a different system anyways.

But the problem with a hybrid device is that it needs to satisfy both home console and handheld gamers. Not everyone will want both. Some may prefer handheld gaming, some many prefer home console/big screen gaming. As such the success of the NX is contingent that it can deliver both a good handheld and home console experience.

It seems like whether it's the X1 or X2 that Nintendo will have the handheld aspect nailed down. But from a home console perspective, the X1 is gonna look pretty underwhelming. At least with the X2 it can still be considered 'on par' with competitors and given it's hybrid-ity would probably have people understanding why it isn't a beast. An X1 though will surely have people looking at this as "Nintendo are forcing another gimmick upon the consumer at the expense of power".

Fundamentally a hybrid needs to be successful at both things. I mean I could cut an onion with a ruler and say that the ruler has multiple functions but that wouldn't want me to have a ruler anymore than I currently do. A hybrid that has an underwhelming experience as one of it's form factors will correctly draw comparisons (and criticism) from consumers.

@FragRed Sony will be, they were the main reason to pay attention to PGW last year lol. They had a great conference last year, and seeing how they didn't do a conference at Gamescom, I bet they'll do one again at PGW. There's the PlayStation Experience as well; a PlayStation focussed event in early December organised by Sony. It's a busy year regardless, so there's little choice if they want to announce something in complete silence. It's too late for that I think.

@Octane
Yea, no doubt they'll make it work with some "stylistic" games - they have to; they've already promised the public big on this thing, so they need to deliver on it... at least for a little while lol

Then it's full-steam "get a Neo."

Just my jaded opinion.

I feel really burned by Sony and Microsoft this gen. I own both of their consoles, and they were both HUGE wastes of money. I would take back that $1,000+ in a heartbeat if I had the chance. I don't even have either of those consoles plugged in anymore - once I got through Uncharted, it was kind of like: what's the point? It's all the same crap that a PC can do better, and in my opinion, Nintendo has the best games anyway. Sony/Microsoft talked such big games about these things being powerful enough to do what they wanted, and then they hit their fans with these $399-$499 mid-gen "refreshes" that, let's face it, are most definitely going to become mandatory for the newest games in two years, tops. It's gonna happen, just wait and see.

Ugh. Just frustrating. Sorry for the rant. But it's this junk that drives me further to only using my PC and Nintendo systems, even if I have to miss a couple good exclusives like an Uncharted every now and then. Nintendo isn't perfect by any stretch, by the way, but yea. Ok have a nice day haha

Nintendo will probably reveal the NX in mid-September. Can't do it in early September, as Sony's Neo reveal and Apple's iPhone 7 reveal are both on the 7th.

@rallydefault Have you watch the Farpoint trailer? I mean, sure a PC can do better, but it still looks pretty good. Stylistic games will look just as good as a PS4 game, it's just that ''realistic'' games may suffer a bit, but it doesn't seem to be much TBH.

Let's say that after two or three years the NEO and the Scorpio will become mandatory and the life support will abruptly end for PS4 and XOne; that still means that the PS4 and XOne had a regular lifespan of 5-6 years. I don't see the problem in that. But I really don't want to turn this into another NEO/Scorpio discussion. So let's leave it at that.

Here's my advice though, don't buy consoles on premises alone, buy them to play games. I enjoy most of Sony's first party stuff and they get some neat exclusives too. I have a decent laptop, but I don't own a gaming PC, so I play the multiplat stuff on my PS4 as well. I wouldn't buy an XOne either, but that's just me. It's sometimes better to wait a year and see where the console is heading, than buying it day one and regretting it later.

@WebHead So just like we've discussed, the fact that NX isn't being revealed before September means that if they want the spotlight to themselves they'd have to reveal NX in 2017.

@Grumblevolcano well as i have said before i hope they have at least a little confidence in their product.

Ok if you guys are so worried about sharing the spot light, can you be a bit more positive about Nintendo upstaging Sony! Jeez, I swear if you guys ran a company, you would never release anything coz you talk yourselves outta it! It's not that bad

The NX will be revealed August 8th. Why? To steal the spotlight from everyone else.
Sony - "Here is our new more powerful console that is the exact same as PS4."
Apple - "Here is our new more powerful phone that is the same exact as last year's."
Nintendo - "The next generation, the power, the simplicity, the home of Zelda, Mario, Kirby, and a brand new Metroid game. There is no play like it. The Nintendo NX!"

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

@DefHalan That's the attitude that wins! Nice one.

Nintendo kept it such a good secret that they revealed it 10 days ago and still no one knows what it is.

@Operative Haha. I spilled my drink.

Maybe the patents were Nintendo building the hype by showing us the step by step journey of the development of the NX which will end with the reveal of a prototype one week before its meant to launch, at which point Nintendo says "See you 2018!"

I'm on the side that doesn't like these console upgrades. Aside from the extremely probable scenario that they will start making games upgrade-exclusive or make the base versions so awful/nearly unplayable (Hyrule Warriors Legends, anybody?) that people will be forced to upgrade, it pretty much takes away one of the few things that consoles had over PC's. Knowing that the box you bought on day one will play games of exactly the same visual quality and framerate as the slimmer box that someone bought in year 5 of its life. With these, that goes out the window and really just makes building a PC the much more obvious choice. For myself, at least.

@Operative There are nearly 50 million PS4 owners, making games nearly unplayable will do you more harm than good. People are already quite iffy on the whole matter, so I think that the Sony and MS will have to play it extremely safe. We know that both consoles won't have exclusives, at least as long as the vanilla console is supported. If they get another 2-3 years, then they've had a full cycle. Their revisions become the new standard and we'll probably be looking at even newer versions that are even more powerful. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on the exclusives, they've promised and now they need to deliver. As long as that happens, I don't see the problem.

I couldn't care less if there are people that play the same games on better hardware. They are probably already doing that on PC anyway.
