I'm on a bit of a Switch downer today. I love my Switch and have plenty of great games on it to keep me busy, but like most of us I'm on the lookout for what's coming.... and there's been too little for too long.
Skyrim was the most recent game to come out that I really wanted, and that was a game we knew about from early 2017.
Since then... I mean sure, Okami HD is on my wishlist, and there's a few others I'll pick up in time, but I remember thinking in 2017 about how there's a noticeable gap looming in Switch hype after Christmas, January looking empty etc., and for me that gap has been about 5 months long now.
I can't see any reason why 3rd parties would be holding out until E3 to announce stuff, cos Switch has been crying out for these announcements for months. An announcement now would get a lot more attention than during the E3 crush.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
When it comes to Nintendo, bigger 3rd party announcements are almost always made by Nintendo, be it a Direct or e3 or whatever.
e3 isn't gonna be some magical big bang for 3rd party releases, but you can bet there'll be some. And then some at the following Direct, and so on.
It's a gradual increase. Nobody is holding out for anything. But announcements are typically made at directs or e3 (LA Noire, Skyrim, DOOM, Wolfenstein 2, Okami, Crash, South Park, Blazblue, SNK Heroines, etc).
And then on top of that, it's like Switch didn't really launch til last month for many 3rd parties. That whole testing period. Which is typically not done for other consoles. And then a year for games to be developed and start releasing en masse.
And then on top of that, it's a unique platform where certain games don't have as much appeal as other consoles, certain games can't run easily without a ton of work, and ya.
But given where Wii U was, and the type of support of 3DS and Wii and past consoles of more recent years, Switch is on a good path.
Be it Ultra Street Fighter II, Disgaea 1 and 5, Mario Rabbids, Skyrim, DOOM, Wolfenstein 2, Dark Souls, LA Noire, Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2, Dragon Quest Builders 1 and 2, Dragon Quest XI, SMTV, South Park, Payday 2, Okami HD, Crash Trilogy, FIFA 18 and NBA 2K18, Tennis World Tour, Blazblue CTB and SNK Heroines, collections from Mega Man to Mega Man X to Street Fighter to SNK classics, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4, Attack On Titan 2, Rayman Legends, Atelier Lydie and Suelle, Naruto Trilogy, Dragonball Xenoverse 2, Nights of Azure 2, Ark Survival Evolved, PixArk, Minecraft, Snack World, Yokai Watch, Pillars of Eternity 2, Portal Knights, Rocket League, etc etc etc.
I mean, no, it's not comparable to other consoles but, given the situation, following up one of the biggest console disasters in gaming history, given the longstanding mindset of 3rd party games not selling as well to the Nintendo fanbase, given the fact support is slowly ramping up from launch and the system needing to prove it's long term viability before many would commit... I'd say it's getting a fair few games. And now that the testing phase is over, and games are proven to be selling time and again, sometimes outselling PS4 versions and Xbox versions combined, it's going to see more and more games announced. Especially with the install base now around 20 million and counting.
It's one of those things where you're not gonna see some sudden burst of games announced. It's a gradual ramp up. Though it should start increasing at an ever increasing rate now that concerns of the system's viability have been put to rest. But if we look at all the games released and in the pipeline now, as opposed to last year, already we can see the difference. One by one we see developers and publishers committing long term. Tecmo Koei is on board. Bandai Namco has said they regret not having the foresight to predict Switch's success sooner. They're on board now. Capcom is on board now, and for the first time in a decade is talking about bringing games that have never before released to the Nintendo audience. Level-5 Is now fully on board. Ubisoft is on board more and more. Bethesda is continuing their support. NIS is fully on board. THQ Nordic is providing ample support. We're seeing other publishers dip their toes in (Falcomm said they weren't gonna support Switch, yet a year later we see Y's VIII coming).
And over the next year we'll see more and more games from these publishers. There's still some questionable ones like EA, Activision and WB, but I think they'll come around eventually. All this to say... It's not that bad. It's alot better support and a lot brighter future with regard to gamer-focused 3rd party games than any Nintendo console I've owned in recent memory. And the trendline of support is heading up, not down.
@gcunit I imagine Nintendo planned on 3rd parties, DLC/updates for existing games and Wii U ports being the main 2018 game source up until E3. Then the 3rd parties delayed a lot of their Switch games.
Looking at Amazon UK's video game bestsellers chart, pre-orders for the Labo variety kit are at #9, but the robot kit is not even in the top 100. (The Wii version of Just Dance 2018 is though!) I didn't expect there to be such a big difference between the two kits.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
That isn't too surprising. The sheer value offered by the Variety LABO kit dwarfs the robot kit, which is a huge contraption just for one small game.
Though I must admit, that's the one that interests me the most. I told myself I would pick up the LABO kits down the line when they're on sale for 20 bucks. But if that robot kit starts selling out, I think I might grab it because I've got a feeling they won't restock it.
Ya. Always said DOOM looks and runs pretty dang good on Switch. Skyrim as well. And Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2.
Seeing those games on the handheld... are mint. It's the pinnacle of portable gaming. Specially given the fact all of them have gyro controls, so you can tilt the system to fine-tune your aim when you're playing in handheld mode.
I use that Skull & Co gripcase now. And holding the Switch feels like a little slice of heaven in your hands. Using gyro in handheld mode in the grip case, it's one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. I almost prefer playing games that way over the television now.
@Dogorilla The fact that Just Dance 2018 for the Wii is in the top 100 should surprise me, but I’m still recovering from the shock of Just Dance 2018 being released for the Wii.
Just a geek that likes video games, and spends to much time playing Smash Bros. and Fortnite.
