Topic: What are your top 10 favourite Nintendo Switch games?

So the Switch has been out now more than a year and it's had many new and exciting games released for it as well as great ports and indie titles and I wanted to see how people rank these games so far? Obviously I'm expecting Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey to be on the top of everyone's list but I'm curious how other games would do in people's list (like Arms for instance), I'm going to give you mine;

This was a bit of a rough cut. Only the top two are locked. Was expecting to find room for Fortnite and Skyrim in there too, asking others.

Oof, this is tricky, outside of #1.

1) Xenoblade Chronicles 2

The best for me. A huge JRPG to sink your teeth into with so much content to do. The upcoming and current DLC content is also pretty good too! Good story, fantastic combat system, and it's an experience that's way more than the sum of its parts.

2) Bayonetta 2

One of the finest action games around. Extremely slick, fast-paced, and varied. Get this game if you like being a badass.

3) Hollow Knight

A great Metroidvania, this blends a mixture of Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, and even Dark Souls into one beautiful package. Get this game if you even like Metroidvanias.

4) Super Mario Odyssey

The best of the sandbox-3D Mario games imo. Speaks for itself.

5) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Again, speaks for itself. It's BotW.

6) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

If you have to have one racing game for the Switch, get this. It may be a port, but it's a damn fine port that plays like an absolute dream.

7) Splatoon 2

The good 'ol unorthodox shooter. Fantastic multiplayer (probably among the best) and a decent enough single-player. I hear the Octo Expansion is fantastic, which I bet should be a great investment for those into the single-player.

8) Bayonetta 1

Bayonetta 2 is just way better, but that doesn't mean Bayonetta 1 sucks, far from it. It's still extremely fun to mess around in, but Bayonetta 2 is an improvement in almost every way.

9) Cave Story+

Overpriced Switch version, yeah, but it's the best version of Cave Story with really good fixes to the gameplay like strafing and Sand Zone fixes and local co-op. Idk if I can recommend the Switch version unless on a heavy sale, but at least play this game on 3DS or Steam if not Switch.

10) Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

Classicvania is back! If you love Classicvania, you'll most likely like this game. This game is nowhere near as hard as any Classicvania (except for maybe Rondo of Blood), even at the hardest settings, but it's still an extremely fun time.

10) Detention: Although the gameplay itself is nothing special, the experience is elevated by a creepy art-style and a complex, humanistic, and disturbing story which functions as an effective metaphor for what happens to the human spirit when held in thrall to social paranoia and totalitarianism.

9) Splatoon 2: An enjoyable and addictive multiplayer shooter, although the single-player portion felt a bit lacking to me.

8) Super Mario Odyssey: A fun, charming, and very exploratory Mario game that makes up for its disappointingly easy story mode with a ton of challenges and unlockable content. Controls are excellent here, although the forced motion gestures don't play well with the hybrid nature of the device they're on. Most importantly, this game feels big and ambitious in a way that other Mario games haven't for almost a decade.

7) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: While it's a bit slight on single-player modes, the track design, gorgeous visuals, and challenging 200cc mode keep it fun to play. The only major issue with the original Wii U release was the terrible Battle Mode, which has been completely revamped and improved upon here. One of the best Kart Racers ever made. I really, really love the music in this game, too.

6) Hollow Knight: Not done with it yet, but it's solidly one of my favorite games on the system already. The visual style is lush and gorgeous. It's challenging, but not in an unfair way. I love how you gradually open up features related to the in-game map with the currency you collect from enemies. It's a great mix of classical Metroidvania gameplay and Souls-esque influences.

5) Shantae and the Pirate's Curse: While I think the 3DS version is still the definitive portable version of the game, it's nice to have another version on a bigger display with the HD character portraits. Anyway, regardless of where you play it, it's still a thrilling, exploratory, and utterly charming game with a nice difficulty curve, detailed pixel art, good character writing, and more dynamic movement and combat mechanics. The best Shantae game ever, for sure.

4) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze: Putting aside any complaints about pricing, this is, without a doubt, one of the best 2D platformers ever made, and the large amount of stuff to collect and accomplish makes this a perfect match for Nintendo's hybrid system.

3) Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle: A truly excellent strategy gem that I never expected to love so much. The art-style really comes into its own when docked, but the game still looks good on the handheld, and it has a really satisfying difficulty curve.

2) Xenoblade Chronicles 2: I had a love/hate relationship with this game early on, but, despite all of the issues it has, it's almost completely a "love" relationship now. Adored this game, its funny characters and writing, the beautiful visual style, the gorgeous music, and the almost staggering amount of stuff to do and see.

1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: The best launch game ever, and a remarkable achievement of open-ended game design. My favorite open-world game and my second favorite Zelda game.

1. Super Mario Odyssey
I do not even particularly like platformers, but this one was just so much fun. It always surprised and mesmerised me how clever and original and fun this game is designed. It's just so imaginative!

2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
This game is so cheesy and the plot is such a convoluted mess, but somehow this game turns those complaints upside down. I love how over-the-top it is and the story always managed to suprise me with its absurdity. The characters were charming and the gameplay is fine. You can decide yourself how deep you wanna look into its mechanics. But the best part of this and all the other Xenoblades is how amazingly beautiful and vivid the landscapes and creatures are designed.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Absolute freedom and great gameplay. I also like the way the story was told. Only complaint is the game is lacking interesting NPCs compared to its size and other Zeldas, but only slightly.

4. Splatoon 2
It's predecessor defined fresh for me in terms of gameplay, music and atmosphere. It gives me the same of summer-vibes like Mario Kart 8 did. I must admit that I probably spent less time with this than the original one, but it is obviously still the better game. There are so many great stages by now and I love how the Splatfests are handled and introduce an additional Special stage every time. Only wish the stayed in the game.

5. Owlboy
This surprisingly became one of my favorite games ever. The gameplay was really diverse and surprised me many times. It had so much variety. There wasn't too much backtracking aswell, it was really fast-paced and kept me on my toes. The story was nice aswell and had a lot of character. I loved it. Even though I hardly like any of the genres that make up this game.

6. Night in the Woods
Actually this is rated equally to Owlboy to me, but obviously comparatively lacks gameplay. The atmosphere is really great and draws you in. I have never seen characters that well-written and relatable in any video game before. Even books often lack to make their protagonists this emotive. The story kind of went somewhere else in the end than I was expecting, but it was unexpected at least, kind of. The music and art style made everything feel really comfy like it feels visiting you hometown.

7. Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
This game is so freaky. I love how the Rabbids mess around in this world. The details in the environments and cutscenes are just so fun to watch. And the gameplay is right up my alley and is just challenging enough. And the music really got stuck in my head many times.

8. Yoku's Island Express
I was interested in this game the moment it first was shown in one of the Nindies trailers. I love how creative this crossover is and how well it works out. The artstyle is right up my alley and some of the writing is really fun aswell. I often get bored by exploration/backtracking in metroidvanians, but doing it by playing pinball really makes it much more fun.

(9. Disgaea 5
I sometimes cannot decide if I can bear how cliché and over-the-top this one is. But it sure makes it a really fun yet sometimes annoying game with a whole lot of depth. You really can do a lot in this game and play it in so many ways. And while it is kind of annoying it also is very unique.
I still have not finished the game though. I regularly need breaks from it.

10. Snipperclips/Banner Saga 1+2/Don't Starve/Human Ressource Machine/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe/Golf Story/Stardew Valley/Crypt of the Necrodancer/Battle Chef Brigade...)
I really like a lot of games on the Switch, but neither for 9th nor for 10th place I found something that stood out from the rest. There are so many amazing small (or big) games that its hard for me at the moment to decide which ones of them would make it on the list and which ones don't. Instead I'd rather wait until probably during this summer new games are released that naturally manage to claim their place in my Top Ten. So until then this list is under construction.

I "only" have 13 titles...

1. Super Mario Odyssey (10/10)
Just a fun game and a modern classic that I enjoyed almost just as much as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy.

2. TLZ: Breath of the Wild (10/10)
I am not a Zelda fan, I only played a few titles. I tried to get into many of them but only completed very few. But BotW was something else. I loved it! At the time of playing I would have placed it higher than SMO but now that I think I have found enough Torok seeds, there is very little left to do. And I think 135 hours are really enough for a game. I rather pick up SMO again.

3. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (9/10)
I haven't finished this game, actually. I'm still playing. It's just a decent JNR title. I like how Donkey really has great weight and it feels original. Momentum is huge and the learning curve is really great. Only multiplayer makes this game much harder, which is sort of a bummer.

4. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove (9/10)
I had a blast completing this game! For 3 months I didn't even notice that I only had two games (BotW + SKTT). But my save file has one weird issue. I am sure I completed this 100% including the DLC. But the menu doesn't unlock any achievements.

5. Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (9/10)
It's Mario Kart. Great fun from the beginning. I would have long put this aside after completing the time trials with gold, but my girlfriend has so much fun that I still enjoy playing it also. Thanks to lightning hitting me when I have the honk, a blue shell coming right after when I'm unarmed, then triple red shells making sure I don't move from the spot for 2 minutes, I also don't even have an easy win against her. Frustrating.. but, well, also the reason I still play this.

6. Dragon Quest Builders (8/10)
If I weren't a Dragon Quest fan, this game could be dull. But I love the music, the enemy design and the overall atmosphere. I feel like my architectural creativity is heavily limited within the game engine and I fear DQB2 might not do enough to really allow truly original designs - and even if, the game wouldn't reward you for it.

7. Overcooked: Special Edition (8/10)
One of the best local multiplayer games! So much fun and stressful. I have shouted at my girlfriend and risked my relationship so many times, but then when you finally get that 3-star rating, it's all worth it! I think the frame rate could be higher, though.

8. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (7/10)
A simple strategic game. It's not my genre and I knew that. But I can feel the love they put into it. I like the atmosphere and just running around. The game can be challenging at times, but when you backtrack regularly to buy new gear, it's not really difficult.

9. Enter the Gungeon (7/10)
Actually this game is alright. I enjoyed it quite a bit! But it is very repetitive and I actually forgot I had this...

10. Celeste (7/10)
It was a fun game but also a pain to complete. I'm not a big fan of the music but what threw me off were the controls. Really, really painful with the joy-cons and Bluetooth lag made it unplayable when docked. I know, you're supposed to use a pro controller, bla bla. I bought a Switch for what it is and I don't plan to buy another controller just for a d-pad. That's against the original design. Anyway, I feel like the analog stick made it impossible to play. I still got all the strawberries.

11. Doom (7/10)
Awesome game, let-down port. I wouldn't mind the blurry textures, but I think the frame rate is much too low. I have issues with the aiming too and I can't get into the motion controls. I probably just need more time, but the atmosphere is lost quite a bit at least for the extremely compressed bad audio quality. I haven't seen any review mention this, but the audio sucks on this port! A PS4 would have been worth it just for this...

12. FIFA 18 (7/10)
It's Fifa. I think it's fun. It looks good enough for me and I didn't encounter any bugs. I'm bothered by the long start-up time. Why do I have to change the language every single time??? Can't you just create a save file for that?! I just want to skip that ugly CR7 face and jump into the action.

13. Sonic Mania (6/10)
There are Sonic fans and there are Mario fans. I don't like rushing past coins - I want to collect them all. And somehow I don't understand the flow of the game. I never get to the speed I want and if I do, I bump into spikes. The problem is likely on my end but I just don't "understand" the game. I don't know what it wants from me...

I think I have 10 games total, this is all I can think of outside of demos. Wait I remembered one more so 1-2 switch is gone

1 Breath of the Wild
There's nothing left to be said, is there? Outstanding in every area.

2 Xenoblade Chronicles 2
I have to echo what everyone else has said above. Tonally uneven, occasionally goofy, character models clipping all over the place - but I love it. An outstanding RPG, and about to take over from BotW in my playtime leaderboard.

3 Super Mario Odyssey
I started off liking it, but the more I played it, the more I loved it and wanted to see it through to 100% completion. A masterpiece of friendly, colourful design.

4 Shovel Knight Treasure Trove
Toss-up between this and SteamWorld Dig 2 as the Switch's best 2D game, but Treasure Trove is not just one outstanding platformer - it's three, and soon to be four, outstanding platformers.

5 Splatoon 2
The most enjoyable online multiplayer game I've ever played.

6 SteamWorld Dig 2
Love it. I'm a sucker for Metroidvanias, and movement, exploration and advancement in this game is just so satisfying.

7 Golf Story
This is how to do a quirky sports RPG. Kind of wish Mario Tennis Aces had steered closer to this little indie game.

8 Tengai
Great 2D horizontal shooter. Hard as nails, too. Feel like being a kid pumping change into an arcade machine all over again.

9 Toki Tori 2+
Adorably cute and fuzzy but also hair-wrenchingly challenging puzzler. Love the old-school design of how the game absolutely refuses to hold your hand and everything you need to complete it is there at the start. No new skills, no tutorials, no grinding - just a gauntlet thrown down at your ability to think around a problem.

10. Atelier Lydie & Suelle: the Alchemists & the Mysterious Paintings - Despite it's low ranking, I did enjoy this game, but I felt like it dragged on way to long for what it is. Unlike most JRPGs, rather than an epic quest, this has more of a slice-of-life structure with cute girls doing cute things. While I didn't dislike that structure (and the story did pick up in parts, I especially liked some of the side quest lines), It took me 65 hours to complete the game (with the most basic ending to boot!), which was just way too long, IMO (it just sort of felt like a slog by the end). It also didn't help that I didn't fall in love with the Alchemy system, which you'll be spending lots of time with (though it was rewarding when you made something really good).

9. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - A fantastic game that deserves to be higher, but I don't have anyone to play it with so I don't play it much (I got it as a gift).

8. Kirby: Star Allies - A pretty run of the mill Kirby platformer, but it's still a relaxing game to jump into from time to time. There's enough post game stuff to keep you interested for awhile, and the final boss was surprisingly awesome.

7. Fire Emblem Warriors - The technically best Warriors game I've played (the FE inspired mechanics really fit like a glove), though the story & maps were pretty generic. I loved playing around with my favorite characters though, and I really liked how the History Mode maps were like mini stories in themselves.

6. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 - The main story was very refreshing, (I loved how they mixed up the standard Dragon Ball story), I loved the high octain aftion, and I loved some of the side stuff (especially joining the Frieza Force & climbing the ranks, and defending Earth with Gohan as Saiyaman), but there's really no reason to play as anyone other than your avatar (the battle mode is so unbalanced, it's just no fun, so I can't just goof around with my favorite characters).

5. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition - While the previously mentioned Warriors game is the more refined of the two, I'm simply the bigger Zelda fan, so that, along with the fact that this game seems to have had more heart put into it (in terms of maps, original characters, and story), makes this my favorite of the two. While Adventure Mode has a ton of content, I feel like it's more of a grind than anything (I still sunk a lot of time into it though, lol).

4. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Outstanding 2D platformer with some truly imaginative level design. It's not a very long game, but it's fun mechanics & many collectables make revisiting stages a blast.

3. Super Mario Odyssey - Truely a fantastically imaginative adventure well built for both meaty & quick sessions. However, collecting moons eventually loses it's luster & once you collect most of them there's no real incentive to go back.

2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - One of the most epic adventures I've run across in gaming. I loved the locales, characters, art, and complex battle system, but loses the top spot due to handheld resolution issues & being so complex it's not fit for quick jump in sessions (which is why I haven't returned to it once after my initial, 100 hour, play through).

1. Zelda: Breath of the Wild - This game is close to perfection. There are many things that could be done to improve the formula, but as is it's astounding. Perfectly balanced in terms of being a meaty time sink if you so choose, or just to jump in from time to time.

For now...

1) Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition
It was amazing on the Wii U and it is amazing on the Switch. With all the Wii U and 3DS content packed-in, it could possibly be my favorite Musou game of all time.

2) Kirby Star Allies
Your average Kirby platformer, but this one still keeps everything that made Super Star amazing intact, not to mention the revival of the three-CPU helper feature from the cancelled Kirby game on GCN. It isn't my favorite game in the series and could feel safe at times, but hey: If it ain't broke, why fix it?

3) Super Mario Odyssey
A great 3D Mario game as always and is nice to go back to the exploration structure of 64 and Sunshine. The costumes, kingdoms, and such were great.

4) Puyo Puyo Tetris
After being deprived of this back in 2014 (thanks a lot, Ubisoft), this one made its way overseas and even though I don't play it as much nowadays, it's still a blast to play. Hopefully this game paves the way for more Puyo Puyo localization (I'm looking at you, Puyo Puyo Chronicles).

5) Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch
My favorite Dragon Ball game of all time, with portability being one of the many reasons. Along with the gameplay that plagued the first game in some areas being polished up to perfection, the massive amount of Dragon Ball flair and fanservice makes me all giddy to the core.

6) Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition
Though not as great as the Wii U version, this one is still fun to play and the added portability makes it an easy option for playing this masterpiece of a platformer anywhere you go.

7) Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
8-bit gaming at its finest, Shovel Knight displays a pure example of why gaming in its earliest years were a joy to grow up in. The gameplay, the visuals, the soundtrack, the challenge, the characters...what more could you ask?

8) Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
This was one game I never expected to be so good and the strategic combat here worked better than I thought. As my first Rabbids game, I was pleased. Heck, I actually want Mario + Rabbids 2 more than any Fire Emblem game.

9) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
It's a great game for breaking the mold for the franchise, though not as great as the crowd are making it to me. The combat was fun and intense and the presentation was breath-taking (pun intended). If BOTW2 were to happen, the weapon durability and shrine count need to be addressed to.

10) Brave Dungeon + Dark Witch's Story: COMBAT
A cheap but fun indie RPG that gets ignored often and though I don't blame it, I do consider this to be my favorite Turn-based RPG on the system so far. The streamlined RPG elements make this title a perfect pick-up-and-play kind of RPG...which is what I can say for the Brave Dungeon side. Dark Witch's Story: COMBAT, on the other hand, wasn't good at all for reasons I won't go into detail explaining. I do hope the Majin Shoujo developers intend to expand on the RPG genre for the series.

Lego City Undercover is one of the best game right now because it's only $15 and the amount of freedom you experience in that game is magnificent.

1. Breath of the Wild. I don't know if it's my favorite Zelda (that would probably go to OoT), but it is up there. So much freedom.

2. SteamWorld Dig 2. This game is basically perfect for what it is trying to do. The cycle of digging and selling loot does not get old until you've run out of things to do. When is Dig 3 coming?

3. Super Mario Odyssey. It's great! Just wish it was slightly more difficult.

4. Celeste. A very difficult platformer with an extremely well-told story.

5. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Just a solid platformer. Boss fights could be a bit frustrating.

6. Shovel Knight. A solid Mega-Man style action platformer with a lot of charm.

7. Fast RMX. A fun, blazingly fast F-Zero-style racing game. Also one of the prettiest games on the system.

8. Human Resource Machine. I like programming so I ate this one up. Very fun, although the UI is not the best.

9. Light Fall. I was hoping this game would be AMAZING but it is just okay. Choppy at times, and too much emphasis on a boring story.

10. Splatoon 2. Just got this and played it for a couple hours or so and found it kinda boring. But maybe I will get into it more.
