@Mountain_Man I'm one who started this thread, and I was initially really steamed at having to unlock all the characters due to how hard it can be. But after playing the game more and more, I'm now enjoying the process.

I've unlocked 63 fighters at this point, all the ones that I care about. What's helped me was to use Zero Suit Samus who has some great ranged attacks. On stages where it's impossible to fall, Little Mac is really useful. I've also gotten smarter with my approach. I've learned it's better to jump around and dodge the AI's attacks rather than waiting for the AI to come to me and hope I can fend it off.

This may sound hostile but, I assure people it’s not meant to be. I hold no ill will toward anyone this may be directed at. But some harsh truths need to be said.

Amiibo is not “the worst”

Of course there’s content in Breath of the Wild you don’t have without them. That’s kind of what happens when you don’t pay for content... you don’t own it. It’s like complaining you don’t have access to a video game that you never bought.

When you buy Zelda you get Zelda. You got every dime of your moneys worth and then some. If they want to create additional bonus content and sell it additionally, there is nothing wrong with that. Problem is people who think they are entitled to every single last line of code ever created to work with a particular game just because they bought the game. That’s like saying you expect a season pass for free just because it’s technically content for the game. It is, but it’s content above and beyond the game you paid for (and if the game is short on content, and you feel the extra content was sectioned off, that’s a different topic of discussion). Wolf Link is content above and beyond the game you paid for. You might like the content, but just because you like it doesn’t mean you’re entitled to it for free. People who buy Amiibo PAID for extra content that you don’t own. You don’t get to lay claim on their paid content. It’s theirs. They paid for it. And if you want it you need to do the same. Or do without, however much you may like it and want it for free. Unless Zelda was short on content, beyond a reasonable doubt, there is no argument to make against Amiibo. The only valid argument I’ve ever seen against them is when things that were traditionally in past games are unlocked via Amiibo. Such as the difficulty level in Samus Returns. I will acknowledge that as a fair criticism. But not most Amiibo content. Certainly not Zelda Amiibo content.

Just because some games don’t offer DLC, like God of War, doesn’t make them inherently superior. There is nothing wrong with selling DLC. There is nothing wrong with selling additional content. And that point needs to be driven home because some people have confused selling additional content with actual pay to win micro transactions, virtual currency, ads and timers, gambling based loot boxes and walling off traditionally pre-existing content. Just because a game can do well without selling additional content doesn’t mean it should. Many people enjoy buying additional content, because when they like something and have thoroughly cleaned their plate with what they’ve purchased, they want the option to purchase more. There is nothing wrong with that whatsoever. I encourage DLC. I wish every good game out there offered it. Because it only expands your options, it only adds... never subtracts. And if it does subtracting then that’s a totally separate issue.

In fact, I would almost say games are inferior for not having DLC. Because you’re more limited, and if you enjoy it that’s just too bad, because that’s all you get. You’ll just have to wait five more years to play the next game. Meanwhile game B offers additional content for those who enjoy it, which allows people to enjoy it longer. And it doesn’t hurt anyone who opts out. They got the exact same game they would’ve gotten anyways.

Best Way to Unlock Fighters
Everything I’ve seen on unlocking fighters, and nobody knows about the real trick?

Simply start the game, go into World of Light and immediately exit. That’s it. Done. Finito. Challenger Approaching. After you fight them, change the language (I choose French), it will do a soft reboot, go into World of Light, immediately exit... done. Challenger Approaching. After you fight them, change the language back to English in the options, rinse and repeat.

This game could be so much worse when it comes to DLC and microtransactions:

-Those golden tickets? They could sell those for a dollar a pop and make it the only way to continue classic mode when you die.
-Four star spirits and certain fighters only available via loot boxes, and rare drops at that.
-Spirits mandatory for VS. battles pushing players into paying for loot boxes to get an edge.
-Leveling up spirits is an insane grind... or you could pay for snacks...

If this was almost any other company besides Nintendo, this game would be microtransactioned up the wazzo and we should be thankful for it.

@JaxonH I'm actually not a big fan of DLC (although I do love Amiibo and have many of them). Now, to Nintendo's credit, they don't give you a gimped version of a game and then ask you to pay extra to make it complete. All their DLC are truly extras, and you always feel like you've got a full game even without it. That said, I wish the game industry would focus on growing the customer base rather than trying to milk every extra cent out of their current customers.

@JDORS
There is a LOT of abuse of DLC, no question. And I think that is why people typically have a negative opinion about DLC. But I do believe that broad negative opinion is misguided because DLC, in it’s truest form, is only additive and optional. Anything beyond that is corrupted. I think it’s important to separate the wheat from the chaff. Because when people complain about any and all DLC just for the sake of being DLC, when people label everything as a microtransaction just for being DLC, most reasonable people stop listening, because it’s an irrational complaint. We don’t want to be like the boy who cried wolf. Learn from that story and don’t make those mistakes. A lot of people like to cry wolf over every single downloadable content made available. And every time they do, people take a look and see what they’re talking about and say, well, there’s nothing wrong with that. What’s wrong about selling additional characters as DLC when they’re already giving you 75 in the base game? And they tune it out because it’s an irrational complaint. And this happens over and over and over with every single game that has DLC. Always criticizing it just because it’s DLC. And then when bad DLC actually shows up, people don’t believe it because they’ve heard that song and dance 1000 times before. So there’s no outrage. Because there’s no outrage the developers get away with it.

In the end, crying wolf is only hurting the industry. I say we should reserve those criticisms for content actually warrants it. There’s only been a handful of games where the outrage was large enough to make an impact. I submit that if people weren’t so busy crying wolf over every single game with DLC, there would be a lot more attention and focus given to the games that actually abuse it.

Brutally hard? That's an exaggeration. Harder? Yes. Multiple characters took me 3 attempts. I think even one or two took me 4-5 attempts. Basically, you just have to hope you're using a character that is a good match-up. I was challenged by Duck Hunt after beating Classic with Pichu. Let's just say, it didn't end well. I need to wait now for the Challenger Door to open again, and I'll select a better character.

It's not terribly difficult, but it is multiple steps up over from Brawl and Smash 4. If I died against a challenger, I beat them again on my second try. It's not too big of a deal imo.

@Silly_G Thanks. That sounds like a good use of the amiibo. The video had a few new suits that were kinda cool, I just wasn't sure if the amiibo memory would store them for future use.

@Agriculture I bought the wolf amiibo just to use him as a sidekick in the game. Well ok, it's one of the best looking amiibo, so it looks good on my amiibo shelf, but I've just always had a thing about playing games w/ a pet or sidekick, probably due to too many RPG. He SHOULD have been included in the game though, it's a great feature. At the very least the wolf should have been included in the DLC season pass, which I spent $20 on JUST to get an invisible line on the map turned green so I could see it. I got stuck on Champions Ballad just getting past the 1 hit kill section so I never played it again, so it does feel like I spent $20 on a green line that should have been included in the game for free from the start. Wolf amiibo for $15 was a better purchase than making an invisible line green for $20, so amiibo aren't the worst, just 2nd worst.

@PolarExperience Good news, I found this on the Nintdneo SSBU page so I can stop wasting time asking questions that have already been answered.

"DLC: New fighters, stages and music will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate through the end of February 2020 in the form of paid DLC. For only $5.99, players can purchase one set, which includes a new playable fighter (not an Echo Fighter), a new stage and a variety of music tracks."

Though just between you and me I'm only putting this here so that when Ntinedo "forgets" to offer them stand alone I'll have this as proof for my paranoia.

@JDORS No, the echo characters are clone characters, such as Daisy, Wolf, Richter, Lucina, etc.

@JaxonH There ya go, causing more trouble again.

For a guy who wants companies to sell more parts to their games you sure don't like taking your time getting to those parts, resorting to trickery and deceit to get what you already paid for. 🤣

Some people like DCL, some don't, I'm pretty sure there's no right side, it's vanilla of chocolate, not right or wrong. Nobody except you like spending money though.

The only thing I think I would prefer changed would be the unlocks to be less random and rematches if you fail to be easier to well, rematch. Even if it were just locked behind an in-game pay wall.

Also anyone who says "git gud" or anything similar and says it in anything but a joking manner, is instantly a terrible human being and should be ashamed.

Unlocking characters for me has been anywhere from comically easy to BRUTALLY difficult. I was getting so frustrated because of the difficulty of the new challengers. I can beat anyone of those matchup’s in world of light first try, but, new challenger and I can barely even get a hit in- it seems they know exactly what I’m going to do before I even do it.

I’ve got a whole pile of characters I lost to whom I need to re-challenge yet again. I hate that freaking timer. We have to unlock characters, fine, I’m ok with that. You want to make them brutally difficult, fine, I’m OK with that too. But AT LEAST let me keep trying until I win without waiting for a freaking mobile game like timer in between. It’s so utterly frustrating, I was almost ready to shut the game down and stop playing for good.

I like progressing unlocking characters, and I even like a challenge. What I don’t like is having 5 dozen characters that need to be unlocked, and each and everyone of them has to be unlocked over a period of time, and even then I have to fight them to actually unlock them, and they make them brutally difficult so that I can’t win, then they make me wait 20 minutes in between trying again! I would be OK with everything if they would just let me keep trying. Already paid my dues and got the new challenger. And I’m more than willing to have to beat them in order to play with them. But it’s almost like falling in a pit in Mario Brothers and then making you wait 20 minutes before you try the stage again.

They really really really really really really need to patch that. Because it’s come close to driving me away from the game numerous times already. This is why people cheese unlocks. Although in this game you can only half cheese it because you still have to wait on that stupid timer to try to re-challenge them. I swear I’ve never played more frustrating game in recent memory. Oh it’s fun. But horribly unbalanced. And not in a character to character sense. And that holds true not just for the character unlocks but even world of light. I got to Ashley, and to make the fight hard on you she causes a big cloud that slows you down in shrinks you. And as if that’s not enough they reverse the controls. Which ok, fine. Reverse the controls. But KEEP THEM REVERSED. Don’t keep randomly switching back-and-forth between normal controls and reversed controls every 5 seconds. Then on top of all that there’s the fact you’re fighting an assist trophy before you can even fight her. And the assist trophy can dive into the bottom pit and it doesn’t matter, because it’s an assist trophy. So it’ll suicide pile drive you right into the bottom pit and die with you. After 30 or 40 minutes of failing and failing and failing and failing and failing and failing and failing and failing and failing... I finally gave up and just went to another area of the map. It was there I found a spirit that negates the reversed controls. Thank goodness for that because I don’t know if I would’ve kept playing otherwise. I’m sure the fight will still be a pain in the butt but at least it should be manageable.

@Snaplocket Not what, a staple of the series? All the games had unlockable fighters. Even 4, which had a bunch selectable at the beginning.

@JaxonH At one point, I was ready to give up after unlocking half the roster. It had gotten so hard that I didn't think I would ever unlock another character. But I found using Zero Suit Samus is really helpful as she is really fast and has some good ranged attacks. For stages in which there are no ledges you can fall off of (i.e. Pac-Land), use Little Mac and lure them near one side of the screen, then deliver a roundhouse that knocks them off-screen. One key is keep jumping and dodging, stay away from them and try to hit them with ranged attacks (i.e. Zero Suit Samus's blaster gun and plasma whip). Now I've unlocked almost all of the fighters except a handful. Yeah, it took a long time, but I eventually started to enjoy the challenge. And it shouldn't take 20 minutes between rematches. If I play two matches, each with a 2:30 time limit, that usually opens up a rematch. You need to do a lot of button mashing, though.

All fighters are now unlocked!!! Yaaaay! Dr. Mario was the last one I beat, and he was tough. I count 72 fighters total.
