I'm playing Journey to the Savage Planet at the moment and it's great. I saw a couple of people talking about it online when it came out on other platforms earlier this year, but the recent Switch port seems to have flown under the radar. The writing is genuinely funny, especially in the live-action video messages and adverts (for fictional products) that you receive from Earth, and exploring the planet and finding collectibles is fun and satisfying. The framerate of the Switch version can be a bit choppy so it might be best to play it on a different platform if you can, but I recommend it if you're looking for an inexpensive (by physical game standards) and entertaining adventure.

I remember being curious about Savage Planet, it looked really cool.

What's the game world like? I remember in an interview with one of the developers said they wanted a "focused experience" which seemed at odds with this type of game.

@jump A focused experience sounds about right, it's basically a 3D Metroidvania. It's fairly linear in that you're almost always pointed towards your next objective and it's not a huge open world or anything, but there are usually various paths you can explore to find useful items, so it's somewhat open-ended in that regard. The world itself is split into four reasonably large areas, and you can go anywhere within an area without any loading screens, even if you use a teleporter (although the game takes a while to load when you start it up or when travelling between areas).

Interestingly, there's no map, so I thought I would get lost easily, but actually it's not too difficult to get a feel for where you are in relation to other things, and it's quite nice to just focus on your surroundings rather than looking at a map regularly.

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

@Dogorilla cheers. The no loading between areas sounds solid, I was fearing with it being more budgeted it would be really creaky.

@jump Oh man, I was all set to buy Saints Row 4 from Argos cos they had it for about £21 when it came out. But I didn't get round to it for a few weeks and when I finally went to pull the trigger they'd bumped the price up about 50%. Why on earth they think that's good sales practice I don't know, but **** 'em, I'm waiting for it to come back down.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

@gcunit I bought my copy from Base.com for £24 and it’s still at that price if you are still after it.

Oh yeah, I played that an arcade a while ago. It was pretty cool. I do love the trend they've had since Space Invaders Extreme of modern updates to retro arcade games like this.

I love the Steam version of Battle Brothers, but it's mostly a mouse operated game with a lot of text, and I don't know how the port fares. Deep Sky Derelicts is nice, but the text is tiny and control is occasionally clunky, Battle Brothers may have similar issues. Also if you're going to get it, get at least two DLCs. Base game really feels like a shareware demo without Beasts and Exploration and either Warriors of the North or Blazing Deserts expansions.

These threads crop up every year or so, and I always put the same game into it: Graceful Explosion Machine. If you haven't played it elsewhere, it's a super-fun twitchy side-scrolling spaceship shooter, and it's absolutely perfect to play on the go.

Seeing this thread pop up, I'm just going to say Twinkle Star Sprites. Originally played the PC version, but I have it on Switch thanks to the Neo-Geo Arcade Archives.

On surface, this game looks cute, really cute, adorable! Beneath it, is a pretty fun shoot 'em up with vs. puzzle elements. You shoot incoming enemies, and shooting them sends them to your opponent. Some matches can last from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, and things get really hectic.

Putting this out there to let others know about this game, if it sounds interesting to them. I feel this is an overlook classic, honestly, one of my favorite games.

Wargoose

These are my favourite games, that I don't think sold that much on Switch.

Lethal League Blaze - Feels like Smash Bros crossed with Pong. It's got lots of style and great music.

Return of the Obra Dinn - A black and white adventure game. It feels like your solving a giant sudoku puzzle, except the numbers are murder victims.

Battle Chef Brigade - If you like puzzle games and haven't played this, you're really missing out.

Ys VIII - Best RPG on the system, by a decent margin as well. Likeable Characters, interesting setting, fun battle system and metroid like exploration.

Killer Queen Black - One of the best team based games out there. You can have 8 player games on one console.

@Sunsy Rival Megagun has similar gameplay to twinkle star sprites if you really like it.

Bug fables
yooka laylee and the impossible lair.
Both are amazing games that don’t get talked about enough.

Off the Road Unleashed: It's a fun open level survival car game, I'd wait for a sale though before getting it.

@Wargoose Thanks for the heads up, I think I seen it somewhere before, but will make note of it. Rival Megagun sounds a bit familiar.

There's one releasing tomorrow- Zombie Army 4!!!

These games consistently get overlooked, despite Sniper Elite 4 being one of the finest video games to ever grace the Nintendo Switch, and Zombie Army 4 looks just as impressive.

Possibly the greatest zombie game ever made.

'Marble it Up' is really solid. Moving the marble is just really satisfying and the levels oddly remind me of the Mario Sunshine 'secret' levels.

Magician

For a game that only has five stages, I'm shocked Riddled Corpses EX has managed to get over ten hours of my time these past few months. And that's only story mode, I haven't even touched the extra modes yet. As a kid I grew up playing Berzerk and Robotron: 2084, so I'm fond of twin-stick shmups.

@Magician Ooh yeah, that reminds me, I picked this up not long ago and while I only had one crack at it, I was definitely enjoying it.
