I’ll just add, I didn’t think Gris was remotely special. Pretty, absolutely, but the game itself is meh.

I've seen a lot of similar criticisms of the game, but I'd think it's mostly a case of misplaced expectations. To quote from the game's Steam page: "GRIS is a serene and evocative experience, free of danger, frustration or death."

So, it's not meant to be a hardcore platformer or even present anything much of a challenge. It's just there to look good, tell a story and be accessible to pretty much everyone. I think it does that well.

@Matt_Barber Hmmm... I think that, even knowing Gris was a serene exploration game, I still found doing the actual exploration quite boring. And the story didn’t really connect with me - but I absolutely accept that this is a subjective thing. I could say the same about Celeste, albeit I actually liked the gameplay there, so it didn’t matter that I didn’t find the story as profound as other players have. (But Celeste still hit those story beats better than Gris, IMO.)

If Gris strikes a nerve with someone with the story, it is undoubtedly going to be a better game for them. For me, I would probably rather have watched a cartoon done in that style than play that dull, dragged out campaign.

Maybe I have no soul...

@Krull I'm in no way questioning your taste. It's just that there is a subjective element to all this and that Gris has a rather different appeal to a game like Celeste even if they've got a lot of surface similarities.

For what it's worth, you get the same with games like Yoshi's Crafted World. Some people find it charming and imaginative, while others complain that it's way too easy to the point of boredom.
