@skywake Nevermind then, I was wrong. I agree, your suggestion would be great for some tier of NSO.

@skywake @FishyS It's 2 separate situations with PS+:

  • PS+ Essential - 3 free games per month, if you redeem during the month it's available you'll always have access provided you're subscribed (if you unsubscribe you lose access to the games until you resubscribe)
  • PS+ Extra/Premium - Rotating library, when a game leaves you lose access to it even if you're still subscribed

I think the name Super Switch is great, but I think they will stick with this type of hardware for a while...so what do they call the Switch 3 and Switch 4? I think numbered releases may work better.

@MarioBrickLayer That’s a really solid point I don’t think many have considered. Numbering the system makes far more sense if this is to be Nintendo’s brand for consoles going forward. They’re not in the position Microsoft was in with Xbox where numbering the successors would make them look worse than the main competitor PlayStation.

@MarioBrickLayer There is still "Mega", "Hyper" and "Ultra"

@FragRed Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS

Numbering their systems would be a first. I think the Next Switch will probably be named after a certain feature like the Gameboy Pocket or Gameboy Color. Considering the step into DLSS scaling and more powerful hardware I think "Super Nintendo Switch", "Nintendo Switch Advance" or "Nintendo Switch Pro" are all equally likely as "Nintendo Switch 2".

Numbering does make sense, but is bland as hell.

Zelda: TotK 4K, Metroid Prime 4, a new 3D Mario, and a handful of high-profile third party games. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that. Can't miss. As per usual, scalpers and second-hand sellers control Switch 2 availability for twelve to eighteen months because Nintendo won't be able to meet demand.

@FragRed I genuinely think as boring as it is, going with Switch 2 and numbering future consoles 3,4, etc would be their smartest play. The Switch branding itself is the strongest Nintendo has had for a long time, it feels stronger than the Wii’s in some respect. Considering hybrid is likely Nintendo’s future, and I don’t think another name will fit this type of system better, why not copy PlayStation’s naming scheme?

Exactly. Nintendo would do well to follow KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. Microsoft failed to follow KISS. What do they have now?

Feel free to ask a casual gamer to sequentially place Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Xbox One S, Original Xbox, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One X in order and watch them derp.

I'm going to throw a new game onto the pile. I think Genshin Impact will either be a launch title or release in the Super Switch's first year. I say this because I believe that much like Fortnite on the original Switch, having a game with a such large install base could help sales on the notion of "You can play anywhere AND have a proper controller!" that other versions of the game can't provide. It could also launch with Honkai Star Rail too, if Hoyo is worried about competing with Zelda BOTW & TOTK.

(Assuming Sony hasn't bought the console exclusivity rights to all of Hoyo's games)

I personally have no clue. 😝 Why couldn't they be logical like Microsoft Windows — good 'ol Windows 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, 11

I vote for Nintendo to use the boring-est naming convention possible. We've had enough confusion.

@FishyS They chose not to use numbers because Microsoft didn’t want Xbox to be one behind PlayStation. When the PS3 launched the Xbox would have been Xbox 2 which would make it look worse from a marketing point of view. So they ended up using random names such as Xbox 360.

Nintendo doesn’t have any of this problem so simply numbering the Switch successor as Switch 2 is easy. It’s perfectly defines to the casual market it’s a new system. And Switch marketing is all about easy to convey messaging.

It's a box.. they could have jumped directly from xbox to xbox 4. I wonder if that was ever one of the options while they were discussing names. 🤔

@FishyS For the current generation? Absolutely it was but probably felt after naming the last console Xbox One, another number would just go viral with everyone making jokes etc. Microsoft likely hates the naming of their systems and they have similar troubles as Nintendo when attaching U or New to a name. Casuals scratch their heads.

Hmm about the naming convention, what do you all think about using the "standout feature" of the console as a name. I mean, the "Switch" was the obvious choice, given the hybrid nature of the console. Not saying that I'd want it, but if that VR-patents are true, do you guys think Nintendo could go with something stupid like "Switch VR"? Personally I'd hate it and I also don't think VR is a horse to bet on. Thoughts?

And one more thing, I enjoy reading all your thoughts on the launch lineup and most of what I've read makes sense. I still believe strongly that F-ZERO will be within the launch window, that's not wishful thinking, it's just suspicious now with F-ZERO99 you're drumming up hype with nostalgia for old folks and with a "free game" for families and younger folks who never played it. Perfect to then pop out a fully fledged F-ZERO for the new console and it could be a perfect console-showcase as well. Think of it: Massive Multiplayer (I'll elaborate on that in a second), blistering fast speeds, impressive graphics, gigantic stages. I'd say it lends itself well to impress players.

About the Multiplayer. What do you think NSO will become with the new system? Will we finally get a dedicated voice chat feature? You kinda really should have that, if rumors are true and we're getting much more 3rd party support with the CODs and Elden Rings. A robust friend/chat system is a must, in my book. So throwing out a massive first party title focused on Multiplayer to showcase THAT would make sense too.

And yeah, who knows what bangers of 3rd parties will be in the launch Window? It could really bring over folks from other consoles, if the Switch is the place to play AAA titles on the go (at least on par with the Steamdeck), people coming over will expect certain creature comforts and features in the online department.

Thoughts?

@Scollurio Switch VR would run into the same issue as Wii U. It sounds like an accessory for the current Switch and not a new system. Nintendo won’t want that again and they can’t afford to do that again, especially as they only have one console on the market now. Also VR will not be the main focus for Nintendo even if it were to be included.

@FragRed yep that’s my reasoning too, but Nintendo can be odd at times. Still they don’t need to reinvent the wheel with the switch! More comfy Joycons (or official pro options), that dlss magic and better hardware, backwards compatibility and we’re good to go!

I don’t care for VR!

@Scollurio I hope Nintendo are very boring in the naming convention and just call it Switch 2 and repeat the same type of marketing blitz they did for the Switch launch. Make it as easy to understand this is a new console that will be backwards compatible but is more powerful and is the only way to play future Nintendo games. The casual market don’t need confusing marketing, they need things spelled out in simple language.
