If there was ever a system that makes sense to bring ports to, it's Switch. Portable systems always gets ports and remasters. Look at the GBA, DS, 3DS, PSP, and Vita. No one seemed to complain about those systems getting ports to the degree that people complain with Switch. People want to be able to play their favorite games on the go. I doubt it's taking much away from the development of new content. If ports aren't your thing, it's simple. Don't buy them. As someone who doesn't have a lot of time for gaming tethered to my living room TV, I welcome all the ports and remasters that come to Switch.
I really like SSBU, but if you gave me a choice between a new Smash Bros. or Smash 4 DX and a new Kid Icarus game, I would choose having a new Kid Icarus game over a new Smash Bros.

What are you talking about they already have SSB Switch so that is a mute point here already. Cherry picking isn't going well for you here.
@SwitchForce I think he means that if he had the choice, he would have chosen a new Kid Icarus over SSBU. You might also want to know the difference between moot and mute.

I see porting a new game different from porting an old game. There's nothing wrong with a game launching on multiple systems. I do think it gets more annoying when the game is 10, 15, 20+ years old. It's annoying because it's basically tied into fairly exploitive greed from these companies. You only really care about the game because the companies are denying you access to it. They change the system architecture to invalidate all old games and then start selling you those old games again. What other industry besides the console video game market invalidates all their products every 5 years?
This isn't some kind of conspiracy from game makers to force you to buy their games again. It's simply a reflection of the different nature of games vs other media. Again, both movies and music went through similar periods where there were regular format changes. It wasn't as rapid or prolonged because games are more closely tied to the capabilities of the hardware. But it still happened with other media.
So yeah, clearly you don't understand or are the very least being intellectually dishonest.
But your old games/music/films aren’t invalidated. That’s the point. Want to play your old versions? Carry on. Want the new versions? Buy them. You aren’t forced to do anything.
@skywake I understand why games do it. I’m just saying it’s a little silly to compare compare industries which generally didn’t have a whole lot of revisions that were necessary to one that has multiple formats every year. They just aren’t remotely equal. Could you imagine if your music collection was invalidated every 5 years not only requiring you to buy all new music but also had it spread across at least 3 different formats?
But the music industry has changed formats multiple times over the past 50 years from vinyl (in different configurations), cassettes, CD's, MP3s and now to music as a subscription service (with other nascent yet aborted attempts in the mix like MiniDisc). The only difference is the rate of change and this is - as @skywake has pointed out - only because videogames are more closely tied to the underlying technology and the underlying technology has advanced rapidly as it has matured.
Despite that we have seen some relatively stable ecosystems. You could still play original Gameboy games on a GBA SP - which wasn't superceded until 2004. A 15 year lifespan - VHS only managed 30 years (and that's really stretching it because it wasn't what you'd call a mainstream consumer product in the early years). Over a decade of backwards compatibility hasn't been uncommon in the games industry (Gamecube -> Wii, PSX -> PS2, PS2 -> PS3, DS -> 3DS).
I actually think that we'll see longer lasting backwards compatibility with the games released today just because there's no need to make a major change to the underlying architecture going forwards. I'd be surprised if I can't go out and buy a brand new device 10 years from now that will play my existing Switch cartridges.
I was largely referring to the more modern era. I gave the example of the zelda remakes on wiiU because that perfectly describes what I was talking about. There was nothing at all stopping Nintendo from dumping every GameCube disc image they can legally distribute to the eshop on wiiU and letting us play those games.
Yeah, I get it. Your complaint is nonsensical. You're moaning about how Nintendo released remasters in HD of games that were originally SD and not even widescreen. That they should've instead put even less effort into it and just dumped the roms on the eShop. How greedy of them.
All of this whine because you're convinced that the old copies of these games are "invalidated". Because for some reason your old consoles immediately die as soon as the new hardware is released. Unlike old music and video formats where you can still buy new content and hardware to play it! DVDs, CDs and Vinyl! As long as you ignore VHS, Compact Cassette, MiniDisc, 8Track, Laser Disc, HD DVD, Betamax, Hi8.
I mean you're right to a degree that PCs don't have this same problem because there is never any generational shift. This is something that consoles are starting to do now and I'm all for it. I'm all for it despite people like yourself complaining about it on these threads as also being "anti-consumer". But even with PCs there are bits of hardware and software that are left in the past. There are pieces of hardware I brought 15 years ago that never got drivers post-XP. I don't have a floppy or zip drive on my current PC and most people these days don't even have optical drives.
Also it should go without saying that there are HD remasters and re-releases on PC as much as there are on consoles. I brought games like C&C and GTA Vice City again on PC despite previously having copies purely because I couldn't be bothered the old "discs and codes" version of DRM. Also if you search Steam for "remastered" you see Resident Evil remastered, Skyrim remastered, Dark Souls remastered, Bioshock remastered, Metro Last Light remastered, Doom 3 remastered, Grim Fandango remastered, Call of Duty remastered etc, etc. So it's not about the change in architecture at all.
Let me get to the bottom of this thread. You and others are for some reason annoyed that people ask for ports of games because "we should be asking for new stuff". The problem is it's kinda hard to describe new stuff. Before E3 2014 nobody was asking for Splatoon because nobody knew about Splatoon. Instead they were asking for what they knew. HD remasters of Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, a port of the 2013 Tomb Raider, a new F-Zero. When all you know about are games that already exist? You're going to ask for ports, remasters and sequels.
Yes, port begging should stop. The only way to stop port begging is buy devs and publishers porting every single one of their games (since every game has a fanbase) forever. The issue is that this is impossible, so don’t hate the player, hate the game.

You know I’ve been respectful this whole time and just simply stated my views on the matter. There’s no need to get so rude and disrespectful.
I've literally had people single me out by digging up and misrepresenting old posts of mine in this very thread. All I've done is simply tell you and others why your views are wrong on this topic. I don't believe that ports are somehow the end of the gaming universe. In doing so I haven't gone and attacked your character. I've said you were wrong, I've said you are moaning and complaining for sure. But I haven't misrepresented what you've said.
Here's my philosophy on debating people on the internet and life in general. You are entitled to your opinions but your opinions are only worth as much as your ability to defend them. I'd argue that it's far more respectful and rude to avoid challenging people's views. By not telling people they are wrong when you strongly believe they are wrong you're effectively saying "I know I'm right but you're too insecure to handle someone disagreeing".
Frankly I find it disrespectful and rude of you to be trying to shut down this debate by playing the victim
I mean I wasn't a big fan of the Wii U ports but they at least made some sense due to the Wii U being somewhat of a failure. Thing is when I start to see people begging for 3DS ports it's made me realize how this has really gone too far. The 3DS was a highly successful console and it is even more portable than the Switch. It seems like some people will never be satisfied, like they need to have every singe game from every singe Nintendo console on it. It's like people are getting complacent with having the same old games all the time and they are no longer even asking for new games.
Not only do I want Nintendo games on Switch, but I want all great games from all plattforms ported. Looks like others agree with me, because FFX is coming, Resident Evil Remake is coming, and many are asking for Spyro. The Switch is the only console where I am okay with re-buying a game I already have for another console, since I'll be able to play it portable.
I'd argue that it's far more respectful and rude to avoid challenging people's views.
I have no stake in this, but how can you be respectful and rude at the same time? Passive aggression???
Pretty easy, you just have to edit your post in an attempt to improve the pacing and mux things ip. Particularly easy when the word you replaced was not spelt incorrectly.

I gave the example of the zelda remakes on wiiU because that perfectly describes what I was talking about. There was nothing at all stopping Nintendo from dumping every GameCube disc image they can legally distribute to the eshop on wiiU and letting us play those games. Yet they didn't, instead deciding to withhold access to those games and resell some of them at full price. Likewise they don't need to do the slowly dolling out games they did for the VC then, and the nes games now. They could make every game available right now but they refuse to do so.
I'd argue that - in the case of Wind Waker especially (but also Twilight Princess) that the small but significant bits of nip and tuck that went on made it a better game. Wind Waker on Gamecube is a game I love but it's one that I've never been able to recommend without a few caveats. Wind Waker HD is a game that I could recommend without a second of hesitation to just about anyone. Even aside from the graphical improvements and widescreen I honestly think that changes like the fast sail, the streamlining of the triforce quest and the Miiverse integration (which I loved in that game) all combined to make it a much better experience.
If Nintendo had dumped the isos and sold them cheaply as "GameCube Virtual Console" then the financial case for making Wind Waker HD would have collapsed (as would the case for revisiting other GameCube games like Mario Sunshine or Fire Emblem with a similar treatment in the future). Some people would say the trade off would have been worth it - a far higher number of GameCube games would certainly have been available - but I don't agree. Most GameCube games need at least some attention (beyond graphics) to be palatable to a modern audience but if they are given that attention and care they can bear comparison with the best games the industry is putting out now.
If you destroy the business case for doing that by selling the isos cheaply today then you've potentially missed a much bigger opportunity (and one that's ultimately better for players) a few years down the road.
I've literally had people single me out by digging up and misrepresenting old posts of mine in this very thread.
Yes, and I apologize for it. I wasn't meaning to do that. Just when I had people asking me for examples of the begging for a SSB4 port over a sequel I remembered our interactions. I remembered what you said incorrectly, and I apologize for both that and bringing up your posts from the past.
So when did a bunch of like minded people discussing what games they’d like to see on different consoles become “port begging” anyway? People will make anything into a negative these days.
@skywake so basically you’re going to be rude and insulting to me, and yet completely misrepresent my posts because some else who I have no control over posted something you don’t like? That makes no sense and only reflects on your character. Since you want to go to insults I’m done.
I didn't insult you, I said your arguments were nonsensical. That your complaints came across as more of a whine than a constructive discussion. Especially given the constantly shifting of goalposts in this thread. But regardless I dispassionately outlined why I believed your points were nonsensical in a large wall of text.
Frankly I feel that this new strategy of yours complaining about me being "rude" and "insulting" is purely a a way for you to play the victim. Kinda disappointing, TBH I expected a bit better. Though given this is a thread complaining about developers/publishers re-releasing a game I'm not sure why I'm surprised.

Let me outline it for you. When you say someone is just whining and moaning when you have absolutely no idea the tone of their voice in text you are being insulting and disrespectful. It's disrespectful because instead of taking their post seriously and responding you insult them and say in effect you have no respect for their post because of what you imagine the tone to be without at all knowing.
If you want to make a point about how you and others in this thread are not whining and moaning about the existence of ports you are doing a pretty average job. See the above quote for a textbook example of someone whining and moaning. No disrespect intended but this is literally what you are doing. Again, not surprising given this is a thread demanding people to stop "begging" for toy makers to make newer versions of the same toys.
I don't want many third-party ports, and especially not first-party. But they serve their purpose. I actually would like to see HD remasters of N64, GameCube and Wii games more than anything. Not many, mind you. Maybe 2 or so a year for the next 4 years.
Nintendo can deny it all they want, Skyward Sword HD is inevitable. I personally would love to see Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 remastered in HD. Super Mario Sunshine is a longer shot, but possible.
