@LetsGoRetro: People seem to forget that the Retro Studios of today isn't the same studio that made Metroid Prime. A lot of key people that worked on the Prime series aren't with Retro Studios anymore and there are a lot of new people with no experience with Metroid games. Asking Retro Studios for another Metroid game is like asking Good-Feel or Monolith Soft to make a new Metroid game. IIRC, Retro Studios themselves pitched the idea of another DKC game after the success of Returns. Besides all of that; they made three Metroid games, and only two DKC games, of which the first one was their most successful game, and people are getting angry at Retro Studios for making a sequel?
Exactly, people tend to think that just because a studio once did something good, that they can always make something good.
Sooner or later some studio (1st or 2nd) will do a new Metroid. But we can't be sure it will be a prime title. I personally think Metroid would be good as a third person game instead of a first-person game. But this might be my preference of not liking first-person games on consoles, third-person makes so much more sense with a controller.
@Octane:
To be specific, some key people left to join another developer. Presumably because they had a better deal over there. This was the resulting game:
Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year
An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
[Really, is your grand strategy for Nintendo that they stop making games that sell and instead focus on "winning the forum arguments"? That instead of developing content that will sell they invest in marketing? Because I think that's a great way to make a console that bombs harder than the Wii U.
No, the forum arguments are for us. And good content will sell well with good marketing.

Maybe it wouldn't be good. Maybe it would. If there are lots of key people gone and new people there, then there are likely just as many people with no experience making a DK game as a Metroid game. The point I've made throughout this entire thread was never about specific titles and was always this general point, whether I gave an example or not:
1- I hope the NX doesn't cater to children and/or casuals primarily. (Name of thread)
2- My reasoning for that is if they have to cater to those people, that means making games for them, which are very likely not going to be games I enjoy.
3- Since most companies, Nintendo included, only have the resources to produce a few games a year, making games for those groups could push back games they make that I would like, years.
While this isn't what I want, I wonder if it would work better than everyone thinks. Everyone is assuming, I think, those are both sticks to move the characters and the rest is touchscreen or something. I wonder if it would work if the right stick worked like "click right for A", "click left for B".
To all those who are going to respond to this, I don't think this is what it is, and it's surely not my preference. This is just an independent thought for this one post.
But, they could only do one, and they chose the wrong one.
Based on what, your opinion? People voted with their wallets whether you like the result or not..
Thank you for falling right into the trap. EXACTLY! This is how the process works and you've just agreed to my point without realizing it! Haha.
Given I made a point about this immediately after how did I "not realise" the "trap"? Because my point was that it's a bad idea for Nintendo to stop making "casual" and "non-core" games. Purely because there is a market for those games and they're pretty much all lower cost projects. You said it yourself, DKCR sold more than all of the three Metroid Primes combined. Clearly there were a lot of people who wanted that game more than a Metroid Prime 4. I was one of those people if you must know.
Again, you want Nintendo to stop making games that have a high return. That instead they should put all of their money into fewer, higher quality games that don't necessarily sell. And how in your grand idea do they close that gap? Well from your PoV they pull money out of development and pour it into marketing. As I said, it's a strategy to win a forum argument while your company goes bankrupt.
Needless to say I think they know what they're doing better than you do
@GameplayJH: Oh god, 16-bit era? You're a young'un! Try 8 bit or... uh... the Macintosh computer back in the 80s. That's where I'm coming from.
But yea, people who hate on a game like DKC:TF "just because" aren't too bright. It's a great game and pretty challenging if you're in it to 100%.
BUT, you guys really aren't giving credit to the other side of the argument. Yea, DKC:TF sold well, but you have no idea how well a different game would have sold. Maybe worse. Maybe better. But at the end of the day, Retro made the game they did, and the rest is simply "what if"?
TF was difficult even if you weren't trying to 100%. I think people just saw another 2D platformer when it seemed like Nintendo was doing nothing but them, and equated it to the likes of NSMB, which are known for their casual nature of gameplay. But it most definitely is not for people expecting a relaxing time, that's for sure.
@rallydefault: it is so awesome to be considered Young. I just turned 30 comma and I feel like a dinosaur when the subject of video games comes up.
You're right, and awesome Metroid game comma or something considering a different artistic Direction would have probably work just as well from a quality standpoint.
I am mainly talking about those who believe the tropical Freeze game was a bad effort simply because of its content.
Remember when we would play games for hours, solely on replay value? I remember playing Aladdin on Genesis over and over, yet I wasn't fond of the subject matter but loved the game play.
My biggest concern is with the games. This is the majority of 8th gen's lineup:
NSMB 3DS, NSMB Wii U, NSMB in 3D, NSMB in 3D 2, DKCR2, Yoshi's Island 3, Kirby's Epic Yarn: Yoshi Edition, RtDL 2.5D, Kirby's Canvas Curse U, Smash Bros. for 3DS, Smash Bros. for Wii U (I don't even need to come up with a joke name for Smash, the names themselves say everything), Pokemon 3D: Incomplete Edition, Pokemon RS 3D: Incomplete Edition, Not ALttP, Zelda Remake #1, Zelda Remake #2, Zelda Remake #3, Zelda Remake #4
Granted, there are a few gems (and a few more on the way), but for the most part the lineup is incredibly derivative of past experiences and sees a decrease in scale and content. We need more creative and higher quality releases.
Other than that, some other things I don't want to see:
-Half baked console gimmicks
-Low built-in memory
-Digital only releases
-A controller anything like that fake buttonless controller
@GameplayJH: Yes! Oh man, I remember that Aladdin game. My one friend had it on Genesis, and I had it on SNES. The Genesis version was definitely better. That was like the only reason why I wanted to go to his house haha
Yea, I kind of miss those days of just having a couple games to play for ENTIRE YEAR until it was your birthday or Christmas and your parents would get you one or two new games. So, if all you had was Aladdin and Battletoads... well guess what you were playing for 12 months lol
And now that I have disposable income, I find myself just buying tons of stuff I never even play, especially on Steam. I probably have at least a dozen games on there that I haven't even touched, and when I think about it, it kind of disgusts me lol
BUT, you guys really aren't giving credit to the other side of the argument. Yea, DKC:TF sold well, but you have no idea how well a different game would have sold. Maybe worse. Maybe better. But at the end of the day, Retro made the game they did, and the rest is simply "what if"?
Games Retro studios has worked on sorted by sales:
11.9mill - Mario Kart 7 (not really their game but, they assisted)
6.55mill - Donkey Kong Country Returns
2.8mill - Metroid Prime
1.8mill - Metroid Prime 3
1.8mill - Donkey Kong Country Returns 3DS
1.4mill - Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
1.3mill - Metroid Prime 2
0.8mill - Metroid Prime Hunters
0.6mill - Metroid Prime Trilogy
0.3mill - Metroid Prime Pinball
I think it's hard to have a go at their decision to go for another Donkey Kong Country....
But it had no place as a mid-life title on an HD home console from a major studio. Retro probably could have gotten the same game done way faster on 3DS and let a 3rd party handle a Wii U port.
That's one thing Nintendo has GOT to stop doing that with their next home console. I think the Wii U has more 1st party 2D Platformers than the 3DS does, and that's just sad. 2D Platformers gain nothing but aesthetic improvement from being on a home system, and as a result, they don't do a good job of selling a new platform with new features and upgraded power.
