@Tasuki Nah. The game's primary narrative elements are almost entirely dedicated to fleshing out Zelda's backstory. You can read a Wiki or something if you want more context, but as with other games in this series, the story is pretty basic.
Surprised to hear you skipped out on BotW, though. What motivated you to be interested in the sequel?
@imagazelle Zelda games have traditionally sold between 5 - 10 million copies. BotW is the first entry in this series to be a legit cashcow on par with series like Super Mario, Pokemon, etc.
Regardless, Zelda is a flagship series that has appeared on every major Nintendo console and handheld to date. I can't imagine them retiring it. So we'll see what happens, I guess!
I'm even more at a loss about where you go after Smash Ultimate. "Everyone is Here!" is only going to work once, not even counting the massive amount of DLC that game has. Nintendo really needs to start investing in new IPs again.
@jump It'll be interesting to see if they maintain the open world approach for future entries. Presumably they will, but... yeah, they can't keep going bigger, especially not after their last game seemingly encompasses every possible inch of Hyrule, from top to bottom, and if future entries don't have the same level of creative freedom as TotK, they'll feel comparatively restrictive. Maybe they'll go the Elden Ring route and go with an open world that has more of a dungeon focus? I dunno.

@jump The script in that image is of Zonai origin though, matching the runes on Link's arm and the runes found on the Sky island walls. The Zonai themselves don't seem to be an evil tribe from what we've seen, and the constructs that attack Link seem to just be doing their job protecting the islands rather than attacking out of wanting to end the hero's quest.
Sure, they could bring back Demise, but I don't get why they would, especially so soon after Skyward Sword. He only really existed to give a reason for why the Demon Tribe wants to outright destroy Hyrule time and time again, with Ganondorf perfectly filling his role.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@VoidofLight I haven’t seen anything in game that say that the Calamity and the Corpse Ganondorf were the same entity. Ganondorf appears to have been dead and not sealed but the curse of demise retroactively (since they wrote it in later) endures even when he is not the main villain. So far Ganondorf has only been able to manipulate others when he was sealed and still alive (obviously as a triforce of power holder he can be resurrected but usually when he is dead…he is dead). Any other groups that act on his behalf/same goals have done so by choice or other influence.(Ganon’s army, the Yiga, Vaati, Yuga…etc) So Until TotK confirms this I will assume that the dead body that nobody knew about until the TotK trailers showed up is separate from the mostly mindless entity of malice and destruction. You are making a number of assumptions that I am personally unwilling to do without Nintendo’s confirmation.
Not sure why you think the 10000 year ago war would end as AoC as per BOTW that one was successful. It is literally the reason BOTW exists… the Modern Hylians tried the same trick twice. Without a fraction of the knowledge required and the Calamity took advantage of that. Thus it requires no timeline break. Either way even if it did (no evidence of this in BOTW) that has no bearing on my wanting to play through it. I enjoyed AoC.
Also your argument about it not meaning much applies to every Zelda game except perhaps LttP and maybe LoZII (as Ganon is dead in that one, LBW too as he is dead there) as Link wished for Ganon’s destruction on the triforce or rather peace forever (and got it). Every Zelda game is a delaying of the inevitable until Nintendo writes the cycle out of the storyline. And that still has no bearing on me wanting to play it. After BOTW came out I wanted to play 100 years ago and luckily I essentially got it (and a timeline break so two games in one to me) so I am merely hoping for the same again. From a practical perspective the current Zelda format sells and since I don’t know what will happen in TotK, for now my assumption is that the 10000 year ago war wont be depicted beyond in game myth. So given that it involves the same map with all the ruins restored I feel it would be an easy story beat to pick up while allowing the map to be overhauled differently than BotW or TotK. The option is there and I merely hope Nintendo picks it.
I get that you don’t want to play the 10000 year ago storyline but your reasons to refute me aren’t based on the series itself. At least not as currently revealed by Nintendo.
@jump I’ve honestly been hoping for a boat entry that uses the current physics engine for a bit. And I didn’t even like windwaker until the HD changes were made. I also don’t like games with extensive sailing (Assassin’s Creed) but I still for some odd reason think a Zelda take would be fun. To that end I think that Nintendo can keep the open world perspective because they can detail Hyrule at different time periods (and thus structures) or even make Hyrule have more lifesized slices of countries similar to Assassin’s Creed games. Revelations went back to similar areas to I and II and that game didn’t feel stale. Just depends on how much the want to invest in the geography or history of existing geography.

@Ryu_Niiyama You can apply the physics engine to underwater for deep sea diving segments too which would make for some interesting results.
I actually like the masochist idea of combing those hated water temples with Breath's game physics and world to make a giant Hyrule sized water temple!
@jump YES! Hadn’t even considered that. But considering subnautica scares the heck out of me I would have to watch a let’s play of a Zelda that spent too much time underwater. Could be a cool way to expand on the Zora though. Right now water feels somewhat safe in BOTW. And I am ok with that.
Edit: I didn’t mind the majority of the water temple first time around.

@Ryu_Niiyama Here's the thing. This isn't just assumption. It is fact that the corpse and Calamity are the same entity, given everything in Creating a Champion that points to it. The book states that Calamity Ganon is born out of Ganondorf's refusal to give up on revival. The book states that Calamity Ganon and the blights are a manifestation of his hatred taken physical form. Calamity Ganon itself came from under the earth and ended up plaguing Hyrule. The whole goal for it was stated to be recreating a physical body for Ganondorf, which makes it seem more likely that the corpse is sealed, and not actually "dead".
Seriously, this isn't the only situation where I've had to deal with people who haven't read the official lore book for BotW today, and it's running my patience thin at this point.
@VoidofLight Dude, chill Zelda lore isn't a topic to take too seriously. It's a frivolous subject with different ways to look at things like discussing pizza toppings, who is your favourite Bond actor and American gun ownership rights.
@VoidofLight Not really sure why you are getting upset especially with me merely wondering about a third game (fourth technically). I never tagged you initially so if my post is bothering you just move on.
However again you are making assumptions that have not been confirmed. Which is fine if you wanna do that but I will not. Also the whole throw away line about giving up on resurrection bit doesn’t appear in the Japanese version which is what I played. (Urbosa also confirmed that long ago the calamity took the form of a Gerudo which suggests that ‘dorf has been dead for a very long time as he has slid into myth). And given that is the source language I will stick with that. You could be entirely correct. However nothing of what you are saying is confirmed in game so again I will wait on Nintendo’s take. As of right now the calamity and dead as a doornail ‘dorf appear to not be acting in concert as one is dead and the other is mindless intent (but that fits with Demise’s curse).
I still wanna play the 10000 year ago war. Have a nice day.

@Ryu_Niiyama The line in the Japanese version was legit the refusal to give up on revival. In America it's a botched translation saying he gave up on reincarnation.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@VoidofLight which again doesn’t tie the corpse and the the calamity as acting together. It ties the two stages of the last battle together. Especially since calamity was in a coocoon trying to turn into…something that didn’t really look Gerudo (no clue how much Zelda has an impact on that form as the AOC version looks more humanoid but still not a living Gerudo). And after that form was destroyed Ganon revived again as the boar monster (so still nothing in game points to the dead body). As of right now the game has a mindless intent born of demise’s curse that will always return and a dead body nobody knew anything about until the TotK trailers that can be brought back to life but isn’t a given as again ‘dorf has been dead and not sealed in other games. Either way I’ll find out in a month. This is my last post on this.

@Ryu_Niiyama Why not both? Have a giant whale swallow you for one area, have an air pocket/spell kingdom like in WW over there, explore a sunken city as another etc.
So I am wondering do you have to play Breath of the Wild to understand Tears of the Kingdom?
If anything, skipping Botw should make Totk a more magical experience for you, since this will be your first exposure to the Botw world. The game will be designed as a standalone game.
Botw innovated with it's accessiblity. You will be totally fine. The first area in botw was such a fun & innovative tutorial to introduce you to the game & set you on your way. Also, the in-game Quest Log & Map System is amazing for staying on track & knowing what's going on, which also made botw the most easy-to-resume Zelda game if you ever take a long break from the game. So, you'll have all the info you need. The quest log has a tab for Main Quests & Side Quests; Every quest has brief descriptions saying who you talked to, where you were, and what you're supposed to do. After you select a quest in the log, if you open the in-game map, the map will have a golden pin placed on the map to show you where you need to go. It's so simple.
The thing is, we’ve already had a more ocean/sea oriented Zelda game in the form of Wind Waker. Obviously Skyward Sword is Link’s big sky adventure. And BOTW is all about the massive sprawling fields and landmass. They’ve explored so many things with this series. From Time Travel, to shrinking Link, to getting him stranded on an island. What else could they do after this?
@Ryu_Niiyama Damn right it is . I am an avid Zelda Music listener since the mid 90's and thought that nothing could beat the Orchestra version of Skyward swords OST, but my gut-feeling is telling me this one is going to be even more impressive! Oohw and not sure if you are interested, but maybe you will like the Zelda reproductions of Tim de Man?
On a more serious note (and not sure if someone mentioned it before): "Was that a sort of Neptr from Adventure Time Link is riding on when confronting the Talos-fortress?" I am already fantasizing if I can build one of those that can throw pie-fused-weapons, haha:).
Gaming since the early nin(e)ties and probably will until death does me apart :) .
Looking forward till the day we can game with all of our senses.
In case you all haven't heard the main theme yet, this is the highest-quality version I could find so far. Absolutely love the use of the saxophone, the BOTW motif, and the 2021 trailer music!!! An extremely hype main theme:
