I feel like this game is being overlooked, which is unfortunate because it's really, really good.

Kodaka created the Danganronpa series, then left Spike Chunsoft to form his own studio. He's released a couple games since, including RainCode, which was very good imo but never reached the height of the revered Danganronpa series.

This game here... this is what people have been waiting for. It's essentially a new Danganropa, modernized, and with far more interesting gameplay. At least to me. And the sheer volume of content is staggering. 100 characters each with their own playthrough and ending. I read that someone beat the game in 25-30 hours, and after the ending it essentially said you completed the prologue lol.

The production values are impressive compared to Danganronpa 1-3. The grid based strategy gameplay is quality and such a good fit, the characters are strong and story is interesting. And best of all there's a demo, iirc.

More people need to check out this game. It's going under the radar and it really shouldn't be.

Got it on order (yay) from Canada (unfortunate) so I can't play it yet, but I've been looking forward to this for a while. I've quite liked TooKyo Games' previous output, so I'm hoping this doesn't disappoint. I've already played the demo, and so far I'm really liking Takemaru. Fun character, useful unit. Anyway, as I said, won't be arriving for a few weeks, so I've got to try and avoid spoilers until I can finally play it.

@Scooby-Doo
It sounds like you're in the US, or at the very least not in Canada. May I ask why you ordered from there instead of say, Amazon?

The tragic thing about this is that I would have to choose between 3 different quietly beloved Japanese tactics games with distinct art styles that immediately remind everyone who has ever seen it of their previous work, between this, Triangle Strategy and Unicorn Overlord.

@JaxonH There's no physical release in Europe. I bought it from Canada because I found it quite cheap there, and I avoid Amazon because their delivery often disappoint. I'd have preferred to have bought from a more local shop.

You can't go wrong with any of those 3.

Triangle Strategy though... masterpiece. Thats not to diminish the quality of the other two. They're all worth getting and all have very different gameplay.

Keep in mind TS doesn't really hit it's stride until Chapter 4. Those first few chapters just set the table. And its a large table to set.

I bought a copy because I'm a fan of Rui Komatsuzaki's character art.

My nephew is playing my Steam copy (wasn't going to risk getting on Switch after Rain Code turned out so... technically compromised). He was super excited for it, too, so I don't mind waiting a bit lol.

But yes, what I've played seems fantastic. I really hope this gamble works out for TooKyo games. I don't expect it to hit the same level of excellence as Triangle Strategy, but that's also my favorite tactical RPG, flat out.

@kkslider5552000 Why would you have to choose? All three are excellent and worth experiencing.

More of an Uchikoshi guy than Kodaka (played the first Danganronpa, enjoyed but didn't wow me).
I'm at about day 38 in this game right now and loving it.

I was a little worried from the demo that the strategy component was going to be kind of simple but I'm now fielding a much larger team, who all have multiple moves to consider, support classes and juggling multiple fronts at once which is thrilling. (Apparently they did these in partnership with the Valkyria Chronicles Team)

The narrative mysteries are great as expected from this duo, hopefully the payoff will satisfy.

A lot of the characters are pretty abrasive caricatures who are unpleasant to be around ( an issue I had with Danganronpa too) but the game has been revealing layers on some of them so hopefully that continues.

Based on interviews with the creators I won't really reach the Uchikoshi content until I hit credits for the first time which is truly exciting! Got to love his narrative flow charts!

1. I have a low tolerance towards tactics games for the parts where you have to re-do 30-60 minute levels., especially since I would not consider myself great at them.
2. I have the most basic games I have inexplicably not played on Switch, especially for my tastes, like Mario Wonder, Mario+Rabbids, Xenoblade 3, any Kirby game, No More Heroes 3, the last two Monkey Ball games, any Sonic game except Mania, Omori, A Hat in Time, Yooka Laylee 2D, among many others in my backlog.

I don't think that should be an issue in this game based on what I've played so far (17 hours or so). Battles have been pretty short and very easy (but still fun). Maybe it'll get more difficult later but I think the story is really meant to be the main attraction here and we're probably not supposed to be getting too stuck on the gameplay sections.

I'd say that Unicorn Overload is pretty easy as well FWIW. The main challenge in that game is in trying to put together strong units and if you can do that then the battles kinda take care of themselves for the most part. Very fun though.

@JaxonH Kotaro Uchikoshi also wrote and directed the first two AI: The Somnium Files games. He wrote later game chunks of this game's scenario.

Scooby-Doo

My copy arrived on Tuesday, and I've been playing it daily since then. I've just got the first ending, and honestly it was better than I thought it would be. I'm currently enjoying it more than World's End Club, which was my previous favourite of theirs.

Still liking Takemaru, but at this point I think my favourite character might be Kako. I'm not disliking any of the characters, even Ima's slightly less annoying than I thought he'd be. It's kind of reminding me of Digital Devil Saga in a couple of ways, and I do like DDS.

I thought it would run worse, but I've only encountered problems maybe once; the loading is not as bad as I was led to believe, barring mid-battle saves. It would really suck if this was their last game, but it's not a bad note to end on, I guess.

Once I finish Clair Obscur I am going to retry this game. I got to day 14 and wasn’t feeling it, but I was also juggling multiple games at once which I hardly ever do, and that throws off my rhythm.

Hit my first ending, this game is so engrossing! I've come round on most the characters now.
Not yet reached a point where I have access to a glorious Uchikoshi flow chart yet. 🤞

Scooby-Doo

I've at this point got 48 endings, and though I do have a few complaints, I'm still really enjoying it. I hate the serial battling route, for one thing. Who thought that was a good and fun idea. I wish the twins got more focus, too. I'd like to see Ima be less unhinged about Kako, and more routes in which only one of them dies, as those tend to be interesting. Box of Blessings route seems quite naff for both of them, Box of Calamity is pretty good up until a certain point where Ima drops out the story no matter what you do, Mystery is currently still a mystery due to the story lock, and the only time you get to see Kako lose it is in the first 100 days, to my knowledge. The rest of the time, they both just die together.

Hoping those spoiler tags work.

Hiruko is a lot nicer than I thought she'd be, but still quite cruel. I like her more than I thought I would. I still hate Kurara, though.

Oh boy, I haven't hit any of the alternative endings yet.
Kind of hoping I'll find some ways to speed that up a bit. On day 50 ish after spending a few days at a beach training camp.

I also don't like Kurara, she alternates between being a complete cow and pathetic in a way that winds me up. Moko is too loud for me but I don't feel I 'know' her yet.

@Scooby-Doo What would you guess your average play time per ending is?
