Topic: SWITCH Micro SD Cards

Posts 1 to 20 of 20

Ste

Hi everyone, hope everyone is doing well. I don't post much on these forums but I do know this is the place to go when I have a questions as everyone has been nice and generous with their responses so thank you.

Anyway, I do not know much about memory cards in general, is there something in particular one should look for in a memory card for their SWITCH? Is XC important? Would any micro SD card work? The reason I am asking is I saw a 512 GB class 10 micro SD card on amazon for about $17 USD. The company is Nuilaks (never heard of them personally but that doesn't really mean anything.) At the same time there is a Sandisk (I know them) Micro SD card only 128 GB XC card but it is $28 USD. Is the XC that important?

Also when I get a bigger micro SD memory card, (right now I only have 64 GB) is there an easy why to move my games without temporarily moving things to the system memory and back and forth like that? Could one do it on a IMAC computer?

Thank you again for your assistance to this and for all you guys have helped me with in the past.

Feel free to add me and contact me
Darn you Nintendo, my backlog is already out of control and you are just making it worse with these new game announcements!!!!

The microSD FAQ outlines what cards are supported. Pasting link below.

Note: you don't need speed rating over uhs-1. If you buy a faster uhs-3, it will work, but it will only function like a uhs-1 card.

If you buy from Amazon, only buy big name brands you know that have like 50k-100k+ reviews. SanDisk, Samsung, etc.

@Ste I agree with what has been said so far. I've been using SanDisk for my New 3DS XL and for my Switch - 128GB and 1TB respectively - No issues so far.
Can't vouch for Samsung SD Cards but you can never go wrong with SanDisk - I also suggest you buy a bigger SD card since some games use a lot of space (For example the whole FInal Fantasy series is about 40 GB) - But it's also a matter of what games you play. I'm a huge JRPG / RPG fanatic and they take up anything from 5 to 25 GB.

As the above posters have said, playing safe with well-known brands is always your best bet. Definitely look at reviews for any that you might see.

I'd also wanted to mention that Black Friday is just around the corner. SD cards tend to go on a very steep sale around then so you could end up getting ones such as Sandisk ones for less than half price. If you can hold off a short while, you might save enough to bump up a storage size or two which always helps

@Ste I got a 400 GB Sandisk UHS-1 for my Switch and have been satisfied with it's size. I paid about $60 for it back in 2018. That money can get you a 512 GB now.

The link is for the 400 GB, but this page has other size options.
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-400GB-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter...
Ships from & Sold by Amazon (not an unknown third pary)
93,000 reviews, 5 star rating.

EDIT: like Alpacatears mentioned above, there are great deals for micro sd cards around black friday.

They currently have sandisk 1tb for sale on Amazon which is a good deal. So if you the most for the best price that would be one to go for. I filled mine up and now have 500gig left and that tells you that was alot of reloading. Not sure if I want to do that again-I might get another 1tb for other game loads because they don't currently have multiple sd slots of which is something they should do.

Ste

Thanks everyone, this helps a lot. I think i will wait until Black Friday time period, and most of my games are physical. But from you all i should stay with a well known brand, but it doesn't have to be XC or the number isn't as important. Thank you again for all your help. I always know I can count on this community to assist.

I'd do one that at least triples the Switch's original storage for a not-too-crazy price. If you have Fortnite or Rocket League, it's going to kill the storage space the Switch has, so if you don't play, archive those games and free a little more space as an added bonus

@SwitchForce Yeah, I noticed that huge price drop for the 1TB card - $139. Before this week, $180 was the cheapest we'd seen. $180 was the black friday price last year. I have the same feeling as you, maybe amazon has dropped the price early, rather than waiting for black friday.

(I used the Contact page the other day to give NL the news/tip regarding the $139 1TB card. I'm surprised they haven't reported it. With pandemic supply issues being a thing, I don't know if a $139 card would sell out before NL could report it.)

Black Friday and Cyber Monday will be coming at the end of the month, and microSD prices tend to drop sharply around that time which trend to permanent price reductions.
Seeing that 1TB card drop to $139 is cool, but its historic low is $109.99.

Also always exercise caution buying microSD cards from Amazon.
Make sure the listed item is being dispatched sold directly by Amazon and not a marketplace seller, I've accidentally purchased a counterfeit microSD from Amazon before, which I was able to get returned and refunded pretty easily.

@RupeeClock Actually if you see which sd card maker you can tell already. Sandisk is has a reputable name for product and replacement if it fails. If one is trying to tie this with other disreputable seller one should not do that. If there is a clear fake then you should alert other buyers to it and not make a misleading statement as though it's Sandisk fake.

@WoomyNNYes that's the problem if funds allowed I get second for loading my other Switch collections to be able to play.

@RupeeClock Holy crap. I never saw anyone report the $110 sale price. Maybe we well see a sale price dip below $139 this holiday season. Thanks for sharing that price history link.

@SwitchForce
The counterfeit microSD card I bought was a Samsung brand one, 128GB capacity for around £18 at the time.
It should be made clear that counterfeit microSD cards are made to pass-off as genuine SanDisk or Samsung products by people with no connection to them, using Amazon's marketplace listings.
They are easily stumbled upon if you search for microSD cards, and will have 5-star reviews based on a history of supply from different sources, not the specific source you are looking at.

This isn't to say that $139 listing for that 1TB SanDisk microSD is a fraudulent one, if you check the listing it does clearly say ships from and sold by Amazon.com, so you should be able to buy that with confidence.
However, in the future the exact same listing at the same URL might be sold by someone else, which is where you need to be careful when shopping with Amazon.

CamelCamelCamel is a very useful service is general. I used it recently when shopping for a new 2TB SSD for my computer.
I set up a price monitor that would alert me when the price dropped below £200, since I'd previously bought that same drive around that price but it had gone up since then.
https://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B08PC5ZYB1?locale=UK
You can see how the price fluctuates between around £240 to £200 or lower.

Although an SSD is not a microSD, it's very similar technology and subject to shifts in pricing and gradual declines especially around the end of the year.

SwitchForce

@RupeeClock They list the seller on the right side-if it's not from Amazon or SanDisk or Samsung by name. And if it was fake Samsung you should've reported it to Amazon to remove the seller and if you didn't then that's on buyer not telling them about it. And the real Samsung would get replaced if that was the case. But it up to the buyer if they find a fake to report it. Amazon isn't going to go around asking the seller if it comes through them as the seller or Samsung seller none of with a fake seller would use as that would invite Amazon to ask whom are you the seller as Samsung would say that is not our account that is selling that product.

@SwitchForce
The buyer isn't to blame here, Amazon's systems are designed to serve the same product listing but from whoever may have supply of it. Looking at the page for an item sold by Amazon or by a marketplace seller can often look very similar if you don't pay specific attention to the easily overlooked seller name.

I DID report the counterfeit microSD and had it refunded, and many other will too, but Amazon's systems make it too easy for one counterfeiter to be replaced by another and continue to get away with it because of how ratings may not reflect the exact product you're ordering due to similarity.
